He’s right: fear of flying is not (only) related to heights, but also lack of control and claustrophobia. The feeling that you can’t escape or move for hours and/or people laughing at you, thinking you’re going crazy plays a huge part in panic attacks. I’ve suffered from FoF all my adult life but it never escalates to panic. My advice? First and foremost: acknowledge your anxiety. Admit it as part of yourself, don’t think of it as foreigner or the enemy. Then use distractions. I listen to music or watch a movie on my phone. Read a magazine, talk to people next to you or the hostesses (don’t be ashamed of confessing you’re scared). Finally, always keep in mind that it’s just FEAR, not mental illness. And that fear is going to vanish as the flight goes on. If you endure the first minutes, you made it. Good luck my friend.

      @Gye16 5 лет назад +18

The fear does not vanish... you just dont have another option but to b in that flight. I have been in a 9 hours flight, crying, totally panicking and getting crazy, I couldnt do anything to calm in any minute. Fear just vanished when the plane landed.

I think most will agree with me that one of the worst bits is when the plane is levelling and it feels like your dropping, and does anyone else get that feeling like your on a roller coaster and it’s slowly going up and up and it feels like you should drop but you don’t ( in short it’s just unnerving )

My airport is SNA (Orange County, CA.). Short runway with super expensive homes right after that. To appease the residents/capitalists living there the take off is the pilots stand on the brakes, spool up the engines to max (so they say) release and you rockets down, lift off, climb at a aggressive pitch to 1,000 ft then they pull off the power very noticeably and "float" over the neighborhood til they clear it and re over the Pacific then do a normal climb. very unnerving and the pilots always tell the passengers what they are doing, what to expect and that it's "totally safe".!

As someone that used to have a fear of flying, here is a list of things more likely to happen than dying in a plane crash:
Becoming President of the United States, dying from a meteorite strike, winning an oscar, winning an olympic gold medal, drowning in your bathtub, dating a millionaire, writing a NY times bestseller, dying in a tornado, meeting someone who speaks cherokee, living to 100, dying from a lightning strike, dying from scalding hot water, dying from food poisoning, dying from falling off a ladder (lol) and dying from falling out of your own bed (lol).
    Happy flying!

I learned from Air Crash Investigation the following:
1- The show covers about 40 incidents happened during the last 50 years. 40 incidents in 50 years vs 1000s of safe daily flights made me understand how safe are airplanes.
2- I learned a lot of flying elements (flaps, navigation, ATC communication, Pilot’s trainings, etc.) that I didn’t know before which answered several questions in my mind.
3- Every incident in the show occurred due to unbelievably rare causes combined together and caused a crash.
4- Those incidents never happened again. Thanks for the noble, honorable, honest people in the aviation world.
5- Incidents does not mean fatal crash.
6- I have never been able to imagine the complexity of an airplane in terms of safety without this show. I mean literally the airplane systems “fight” to the last second before any crash can happen. For example, in the unlikely event of an engine failure the plane still flies with 1 engine. Even if all engines stopped working (almost impossible) the plane still glides safely to a nearest airport. Even if all engines stopped working and the plane has no power, the pilots still have secondary sources of power to be used in emergency events. Every single system has alternatives if any fail.

Here’s another good piece of advice. Flying is a regular thing, you’re just not used to it. Thousands of flights every day, just like car rides and train rides and every other form of transportation. Pilots and flight attendants are highly trained professionals. Planes may be scary but at the end of the day you will be fine.

I also read to set timers for every 10 minutes (if you’re on a short flight) bc then you are that much closer to landing. I tried this once and it actually helped. I have a horrible fear of flying and I’m getting ready to fly on Tuesday with all my kids. I’m trying to do what I can to calm myself so they can see me calm and not get scared as it’s their first flight. Last time I flew I almost grabbed the girls arm next to me. That’s how fearful I am, but realistically I know it’s safe. I know it’s an irrational fear. It’s just a feeling of being helpless in the air. Plus I think I’m more afraid of the feeling of anxiety than anything. I’m afraid to be afraid, if that makes sense. The anxiety itself has a hold on me and I really would like to be free of that.

I think the best way to overcome your air travel fear is to believe in the pilot of your plane.. and believe that he knows how to handle the situation.. all air crew members are well knowledgeable about the situation onborad so relax have your seat belt on and enjoy the ride and trust the air pilots know their job well. And also keep in mind that air turbulence are common for planes to come across. Please just follow the instructions of the cabin crew members and pilot for a safe journey... Hope this tip will help a little to at least. Do keep me posted.

Elaine C yeah but to be honest what does it gives you? the pilot and everyone in the crew have the same chances of crashing as you, they won't save you or anyone else. it's the same if you say that you trust yourself so you won't crash but you have no control over what will happen. so do not have pilot or crew in a situation that you can't escape, so they can't and it sometimes don't even depend on them for real like i'm so scared sometimes cause they literally are not some magicians or whatever, they're like me or you and have nothing to say tbh

I fly for business reasons and have been on over 300 flights. I still tend to get a little nervous but I can distract myself. Here are a couple ways I decrease my anxiety. I hope this helps. : )
    - We are all more likely to die in a car accident than a plane accident. Yet, I do not get nervous about driving my car. So, I tell myself not to worry, the plane is safer.
    - I buy a magazine or a newspaper I want to read at the airport. I do not routinely purchase these reading items so it is a treat for me. I start reading and my anxiety decreases.
    - I like to watch movies so if in flight movies are offered, after I sit down I start scanning movies.
When I find one I like, I start watching as soon as possible. I get so engrossed, I forget I am flying.
    - As soon as drinks are being served I usually calm down a lot. I figure the pilot would not allow
drink service if there were any concerns.
    - Sometimes I listen to music, and this can calm me down,
    - If you are a talkative person, sometimes talking to your neighbor on a flight helps. When I am
nervous, talking to my neighbor does not always help me but I know some people say it makes
    a difference.
    - Crossword puzzles. I carry a couple of crossword puzzle I cut out of the newspapers. I find trying
to solve a puzzle helps me.
    - I remind myself the wings moving is not a concern, the wings are designed to move.
    - We humans do not not move up and down in vertical space much. So, the vertical sensation
that occurs in turbulence is 'uncomfortable' but it does not mean anything concerning is
    happening.
    - Each time I finish a flight and walk off, I tell myself I accomplished the flight and I am proud. I sorta laugh at myself for making a big deal of the flight. And replay the scary
moments- realizing they were not that scary. I was just working myself up.
    - I know people who will not buy their favorite candy for 3 weeks before the flight. Then, while
in the terminal, they buy their favorite candy bar. Then on the flight they get to eat it.
They reward themselves for staying brave and finally having their favorite candy is a big
    treat!

Of course you could. But if you think that about flying, why don't you think that about getting out of bed? Or walking down the stairs? Or driving a car? Or crossing the road? Or being stuck by lightening? All these things are MORE likely to happen to you than dying in a plane crash.....So why are you only scared about flying? Makes no sense.

    • @user-ld5mz4fg3k
      @user-ld5mz4fg3k 6 лет назад +16

The pilot mentions it - the issue of control and knowledge. I control how I get up from the bed or how I go down the stairs or drive a car, or how I cross the road. I control these actions and I know all the relevant variables. I am aware of how I am diminishing my chances of any of these actions resulting in death or injury to me. Additionally, I have more chances of surviving falling of the stairs or a car crash, than of surviving a plane crash.
A flight has a myriad more variables the vast majority of which are beyond my control and knowledge and depend on many people I have few reasons to trust.
Trusting my life to a complete stranger who might actually meet his last moments with exhilaration as he approaches the ground at almost the speed of sound is quite hard for me.
As for being struck by a lighting, flights are a more frequent event in my life than lighting so no, it's not more likely for me to be stricken by it.

+Бернардо Галкер All of this sums up my intense fear of flying, but hey, we HAVE to fly. It's gotta happen unless you live in the most exciting city in the world and will never have a need to check out any other places on earth.
Three things that calm me are if I die in a plane crash then that was the way it was meant for me to die, I can't die without ever having (or attempting) traveled outside my country, and knowing how tough planes are (they are designed to take a POUNDING!!) and the MANY safety mechanisms and precautions taken before you even enter the plane.
Another helpful thing for me is , paying attention to the flight attendants. They fly all day everyday and know when something's gone (or is going) terribly wrong lol

I been playing flight simulator and that really helps me understand how planes fly. My biggest fear in my mind is that during take-off we would crash into another plane. I now know that can't happen because airplanes fly pre-determined departures and approaches at an airport to keep them in a single file line plus all planes have TCAS which alerts them to nearby air traffic.

Not auto-pilot, but true "no one in the cockpit", computer flying aircraft. The commentators both agreed "NO". Its nothing to be afraid of we are all safe inside the plane away from the outside. And i trust the pilots and I think its that trust that makes me feel very secure. Plus I see southwest planes flying past my house and over my house and so when I flew southwest for the first time it was fun to be on the other side and I wasn't afraid because i knew that i see them all the time and they never crash. But i’ve been thinking about death a lot these days and I’m so afraid of something bad happening, not only to me but every single person in the plane. It’s turbulence that’s scary, especially when it’s more than just minor bumps but sustained rocking in three dimensions. The best/worst part are the sudden drops. Yes, the actual drop is minor and this is a trick of the brain, but still feels like riding a roller coaster blindfolded. And let’s not get into flying through storms or over mountains, where it really gets choppy. No, I don’t think there’s anything you can do about that. If you’re afraid of roller coasters then you’ll be afraid of flying, and that’s that. It can’t be helped. I speak from experience as one who has tried all of these solutions, from education and positive thinking to booze and Dramamine. None of them work for me. Oh, well.

I definitely get uneasy flying but it isn’t bad enough to keep my from flying. Every once in a while I have to take a little Xanax if I’m feeling too anxious and it’s usually only bc I make such a big deal out of it. I’ve had terrible turbulence before, so bad people started screaming, and I had taken a Xanax before hand (thank god) and since I wasn’t freaking out it really put things into perspective for me. Either way, Xanax or not, we were never in any danger. So really it comes down to just relaxing and enjoying the flying for what it is. It’s not dangerous and usually you’re going somewhere fun.

When I was younger I loved flying, and still do today and want to become a pilot as a pass my school exams over time but I had a period around year 6 (grade 7) where I watched Air Crash investigations regularly and then soon later I was in a jet where there was a minor problem I'm not sure what it was but the pilot got a caution warning and this would usually not be too much of worry but because I was watching Air Crash Investigation in the year often I was quite scared. This gave me a minor worry in all flights especially when winter came and a few icing problems came up including one close call to a disaster which I was not on. This was a few years ago and I've over come this fear I ever had and never watched Air Crash investigation and gone back to my younger self and yearning to become a pilot. While you may find the program interesting and cool as I did, if you are ever put into a situation of any problem on a plane you will over react and worry horribly, trust me.

Airplanes, for western standard airlines anyway, provided incredibly controlled spaces where there are hundreds of parts and systems working to keep me safe. That plus the highly skilled pilots.
