- 98 Cummins N14 select plus for the past 6 months fuel pressure gauge keeped on rising and no matter how many filters I changed didn't fix the problem so this video will show you how to save 500.00.
Today I replaced the small wire filter you mentioned and problem solved. Thank you very much for the info.
thanks for the video. I have a 91 Peterbilt 378 with the N14 and high vacuum pressure while running. I had a problem with the truck losing prime and ran a hose from the filter direct to a fuel can and the high pressure went away. thank you for helping me narrow down what it most likely is.
Came across your video the other day, searching for my sputtering N14. I figured I’d take a chance and see. WOW, the crap that was in there. If I could show my pic of it, I would. Runs great now, thanks for the video.
My truck has a cumims N14 with the same fuel pressure problem, the system was discharged. Thanks to you and your video, I have solved this problem, which the mechanic recommended that I replace very expensive parts that had nothing to do with this problem.
Those check valves are a very common problem with M11 and N14 Cummins, the fitting on the right side of the ecm fuel cooler has a check valve built into the fitting to keep the fuel prime, when the springs get old they don’t push against the seat of the valve causing the your fuel to drain back to your tank, prolonged starts, or even no starts. Detroit 12.7L had a similar idea, but they placed their check valve in the back of the head to keep fuel prime. I wouldn’t advise bypassing unless for emergency. the fuel cooler is essential for cooling the ecm from the heat of the engine.
@jacobking6966 Right side or left side? Everybody else I’ve seen referenced left side as in this video, do some have the check valve on the right side? I took my left side off and it’s just a fitting, no valve, maybe previous owner just put an elbow or do I need to check the right side as well?
Thank you very much for the great informative video. this saved me a lot of heartache. Great job !!
Thank you so much. Rare to see a guy with a Select Plus like I own posting on RUclips.
Just bought a N-14, thanks for the video. I will probally just replace the one filter, and remove the check and clean it before I put it in service.
Great video!!!!, easy to follow, very useful tips, clear voice and video image.. Two thumbs up
Great informative tutorial. Thanks so much. I’ve got an N14 in my T800. So far no issues but in the meantime I’ll be checking those items out now that you mentioned it. Great job.
That's for the tip bro I'll be sure to check out those things on my truck I barely got a western star with a N14 and your video is helpful I don't have problems with it but it doesn't hurt to chuck those things thanks
I wish I could like this tons. You saved me so much headache. Cannot thank you enough for sharing your knowledge truck had some rubber in the check valve (no spring) cleaned it and runs like a top again.
Thanks bro had heard of that check valve but could never find it thanks for sharing
Thanks for this video. I had fuel problems with my truck and I try your fix and the check value was dirty . Works good now !!
I'm glad this video helped :)
Great video Eddy, thanks for the tips!
That was really informative Didn't know about that one way check valve on the Elbow
Sure info mate, well done. Love your work.
Nice tip there on both of those little gems. I have to say I really like how you calmly and clearly explain what you are doing and why....I'm suscribed
This was exactly my problem. Looked like a plastic grocery bag got into my system and plugged the check valve completely up. Thank you for the information.
Respect to the MAX... AND MAY YOU BE BLESSED...
I would have never known about the filter in the pump. I was going through filters cause I thought they were the reason why. But I did find lots of crap in my check valve. also. Thank you for your knowledge
And now I know where it is. Thank you for great video!!!!
Thanks bro resolved my problem with the check valve
Thank you. I got my first N14 running in December and I've been having issues. I was going to pull the check valve, but I didn't know about the other filter on the pump.

Great video, thanks for the info, it really helps.
Thanks mate, i have a cummins 3.9 isb, i dtarted checking thw fuel filter with manual pump as those ussually get craked orings qith time, didnt knew this was the check valve, almost replaced the filter base thinking it was all inside and that was just a fitting
I've been working on one of my company dump truck's forever trying to figure out how the fuel drains out of the filter after you kill it very informative thanks so much for the video
Thank you. Very well explained and helpful.
thanx boy for that Nice video, have got the samedi problem within an N14, And after spending lots of money i foond a guy that solve it the same way. thanx
Good tips bro. Thank you.
Great helpful video bro... Thanks

Really really helpful, thanks a lot !!!
Thanks Guy
Keep 'em coming
hi Anderson you saveme alot money thankyou
my big trucks check valve was totally jammed...Too bad that I spent $1800 & still no results from 3 dealers service depts. None of them even came close to mentioning this valve...Shame on them taken advantage...thanku for info or I would still be stopped
Dealer will never tell you about that check valve unless you are a good Costumer.
Wow this great information thanks for sharing
Valuable information thank you very much
Super knowledge sea this every day shoot more videos n 14
Very informative 👌🏼
Good job bro , I had a same problem
thank you for your help. ill give it a look
Appreciate your video
Preciate your knowledge.
Man thanks alot I'm gonna replace all these items just because
Hi,
Is it the same way we go about solving a Cummins M11 fuel running back and making it hard to start?
Very good master
Good video!
Thankz 4 video.. bout 2 get a pete with a n14 in it
Great vid...
Do you happen to know what the fuel pressure should be at the spin on fuel filter and if that clogged port raises the fuel pressure. Having issue of bloating filter
Hi Mr Anderson thanks four your video i have an engine that in low revolutions works perfect but when the revolutions became faster it starts with the failure it seems to be an inyector trouble , i already check them and the 6 inyectors are fine, so i dont know what to do can you help me?
Cool Video .
It's not Pressure it's Vacuum. Vacuum is measured in Inch Mercury .
You're probably right I'll have to confirm my checking the line to see where it's mounted.
Awesome thx for sharing
Any idea on black smoke at accelerating only, engine was just rebuilt, new everything except 3 injectors, doesn’t loose any power just to much smoke every time I accelerate.
thanks . I found a similar check valve and screen in a payloader . No one fix. Dealer gave up.
Any engine that is hard to start I put an outboard motor fuel line primer ball between tank and pump. I prime until ball is hard. Motors fire right up.
Mack E7 has same issue. Check valve leak back to tank. Thank You
I have a 2000 peterbuilt I got a truck that has been sitting for 10 yeas when I try to turned it on it dem like it’s starving for fuel I did change the filers and new fuel but aits just cranking and cranking but it will not stay in , any sugestión ???
Anderson,For the last couple of weeks my truck was starting when the motor was cold but wouldn't start after it was hot, now it won't start at all.?? Any ideas why? Thank you
Gracias nadie me dijo del filtro pequeño al final de la bomba en estos momentos tengo un N14 que se baja el nivel del filtro y no arranca 👍
thank you!!! Very useful. And it is free too. :)
My N14 had a straight nipple in it instead of the elbow nipple but it was still the same check valve mentioned in this video. It is located in the same position as this video shows. If your filter is sucked dry when it starts and then dies, then this is most likely the issue. It is a very easy fix and will save a lot of money by doing it yourself. If you change your filter and still is starving for problems then this check valve and the screen in the pump could be your problem.
Is there an o ring on the cap for the filter on the pump?
I will be doing this with my truck tomorrow. I will let you know how it turns out. I will be putting on an AirDog too.
Fyi- The re route of the fuel lines is ok for an emergency. However the ecm relies on diesel flowing through the cooler plate to cool the ecm. To permanently by pass it..not recommended.
In the video I rerouted the fuel line just to get home till I found the problem, if continued to drive with out the diesel cooling the ecm it will end up overheating the ECM and will end up costing $1,000.00 replace plus tow. I'll post another video how I reroute the computer (ecm) and I'm using a separate cooler to keep the ecm nice and cool .
Just do like the previous owner of my T800 did. Just disconnect everything that doesn't work.
My truck when new came with every bell and whistle option they had, but when I got it was running on bare minimal anything.
100+ hours into it and I have about half of the stuff working now.
Yes sir I have a case 580d backhoe with a 4 cylinder Cummins can you tell me where it would be located on it and it's a vacuums line coming out above injector pump from intake
Hey man, u won't believe it but after i spent about $3500 on this truck and it still had the same problem . The dealer said to change the throttle, same problem then they said to change the tps and idle validation switch then it works, after all it was the validation switch,
Hi Anderson, love the video.Jast wandering if all this work for ISM Cummins? Thanks
I'm not sure on other Cummins since I only have the N14 .
The strainer can be easily cleaned with either. When metal shavings are found here , it is a sign of fuel pump failure or soon failure .
I'm having some of the same issues missing at low rpm only under a load. I also have a issue if it rains the truck will cut off and you have to put a hot wire on the fuel solenoid to get it running. We have tried for a week to figure it out. Also SOMETHING Weird If You Hold It On THE Floor It Will Turn 1400 Rpm As It Suppose to. If you give it 20 seconds or so it will start jumping then bam it tacks out which its not suppose to do sitting still. I by passed my plate about a month ago not knowing about check valve. I'll fix that asap. But I need help on the other issue. The ran deal throws me off
good to know that thanks
Check the fuel line from the diesel tank nearest to the exhaust pipe if ur still having problems. Ours was cracked and would drain the line from the coolant exchanger whenever down. The truck would start with full tanks but once the level got down to 1/2 the path of last resistance was thru the broken line from the frame to the tee connecting the other tank
I wouldn't recommend bypassing the computer as the diesel cools it.. A way you could check flow thru it is remove the big fuel filter then go to the coolant diesel heat exchanger and take the fuel outlet off and blow on it.. Should be relatively easy to remove gas
I have the same Engine an a Kenworth truck My problem with my truck what it drives the truck shut off but when the truck is parked the truck keep running I’ve change the fuel pump still the same problem only while I’m driving I’ve change the fuel filter’s do you know what it might be
Wat would cause it to shutdoun filter is not emptt but when loosen iair comes out tighten it and it starts right up
Fuel filter drains on my n14 I have the clear see thru filter system, I don't see the elbow behind the ECM
Muy buena está información me sirvió mucho gracias amigo
Se ve bien pero no le entiendo el ingles
Serias tan amable de explicarmelo gracias
Thanks man
The fuel is routed through the ecm to keep it cool
Thanks bro
Sup bro I'm working on a Cummings ISM410 And it isn't pulling fuel from the tanks my lines are new.
Thks
Doesn't That heat exchanger help cool the computer?
ECM check valve blew a hole in the line I’m assuming because it was leaking and bubbles of diesel was coming out after it shut off
Is there a primer on this engine?
Isx engine have same thing?
hey does any one tell me what would be the problem in my truck 2000.every day in the morning it does not want to start.like it suck air
Cummins recommends changing the filter at least every other oil change.
Having a similar problem in a work truck think it’s a check valve, it runs happy when you spray three cans of ether to start it other then that it just cranks and cranks
you should clean the cooling plate behind the ecm as well.
Prompt catalog number of this valve please
Ty
Hey man my N14 have a same problem a will chance that litle firter maybe thats is the problen
Anderson I got a n14 like yours and it takes while to start what's the fuel solinoide do its on your video it's the red one by pump
No , the red solenoid only shuts the fuel off and on, remove the diesel filter and if its half way empty fill it up with clean diesel and reinstall, make sure no dirt falls in and try to crank the truck, if it starts easier you have a problem with fuel draining back to the tank as the truck is shot off for a while.also what kind of truck do you have? example mine is a 98 Kenworth t800 with the N14 and i have an single 150 gallon tank on the passenger side and the main fuel line (supply line) that screws on the tank sometimes gets loose and that will cause to pull air instead of fuel from the pipe that goes all the way to the bottom of the tank, this can also cause random stall or shut down while driving and it needs to be cranked for over a minute to fill the diesel filter back up.
I have an n14 cummins. I have a problem with low power. I changed the injectors, fuel pump, turbo, and fuel lines. The engine stalls on me sometimes. I had the dyno test done and the dyno was ok but the engine is still lacking power. What can I do?
Call Michigan turbo ask for jay...ask for a quick spool turbo...cost about 12 hundred or less if you have a core...he machines it all himself...it added near 55-75 hp...insane difference but don't over rev...never go over 22 hundred...major difference..night and day difference call him
I want the filter # to purchase
Hey it takes a long time no start I don't really know can you help me?
