You'd think the game director coming out and essentially saying "we're fine with mediocrity and you(other game devs/game directors)should be too" would be the final push the playerbase needs to leave this game, but we all know that won't happen.

Then seeing the game director say that gave me the push to say I’m probably never coming back. I hope people can organize a boycott for Lightfall because at this point I feel like it’s the only way Bungie MIGHT do right by the community and do what’s good for the game.

I really used to avoid videos like these, because I wanted my purchases to be justified. I didn't want to confront the fact that all that money I had spent was wasted. Destiny 2 is very much an addiction that runs on Sunk-Cost. It isn't hard to quit because it's fun, It's hard to quit because it's scary to feel like all your money was wasted. Its frightening how long it took for me to realize how manipulative this game is. My advice is to be kind to defenders of the game. Don't argue with them, reason with them. Give them the information they need, and let them come to their own decisions. My mind wasn't changed because some random person on the internet yelled at me, It was changed because I realized over the period of a few months that it is the job of someone at Bungie to scare people out of quiting the game. I've decided that I won't be returning for lightfall. I don't want to sink any more of my time or money into Destiny 2. Recently I've been branching out to other games, and I've remembered what it's like to play games designed to be fun. If anyone reading this is on the fence about buying Lightfall, I encourage you to think it over. Try out some well-reviewed Indie-games. Consider each perspective and try to list the reasons to leave, and the reasons to stay. Be honest with yourself.
    Good luck.

    • @JISHBOSIN
      @JISHBOSIN 2 года назад +2

Well said and properly articulated. As someone who is very invested in the game as a hobby, as something I value and play weekly (if not more). I see and value the opinions of those who deem it necessary for them to leave the game. That being said, I've said this before, i think people viewing this game as a hardcore game/MMO is not what is intended. There are GMs and high tier content for those who want to invest more into their hobby (like harder puzzles, or higher end models to compare to other hobbies). But nothing is forcing you to buy/invest in these higher tiers. No one is forcing you to play when you don't want to (unless your actually addicted). I play this game a lot, but I drop it when I'm bored and play other games.
I do think for 100$ a year (roughly) I'm getting my moneys worth from my Hobby of Destiny, my friend buys $100+ model kits near monthly to support his hobby, I think doing that once a year is well worth the content I receive. I do feel wrong even somewhat illuding to how they monetize this game to be anywhere near "good" I fully belive Shadowkeep and older should be free, beyond light should be free once lightfall comes out (etc). and there should just be an easy one time purchase for things instead of the dungeon key being Silver, but the season pass is real money but older seasons are... (honestly idk how you get older seasons).
But my point with it is, viewing it as a legitimate hobby and seeing your character as your "model" (refering to model trains/gundems etc) For those hobbies to ""catch up"" there is a bit of money investment to get started (again, im not justifing their shitty piece by piece strategy) but I personally think the amount of content we get for $80-$100 a year is really really good when compared to the industry.
Lastly, more power to ya if you dropped this game or realized it wasn't worth it to you as an individual, but like OP said don't judge others for thinking differently. This was just my perspective and how I've found that this game is genuinely great still.
TL;DR viewed as an actual hobby, D2 is a lot cheaper then most others, but viewing it as a video game I understand the pain points.
P.S. If you were offended by anything i said in this post i apologize and nothing was meant as a personal attack.

@@JISHBOSIN no offense taken. If you feel you get your money's worth, than that's great! My problem with the game isn't that people enjoy it, but that it uses very manipulative tactics like FOMO and Sunk-Cost to keep players invested. I personally think that the raids and dungeons are very fun, And I might play them again in the future, but I've decided that there are better uses of my money. I do agree that FOMO/Sunk-Cost are all very manipulative and are a horrible business practice. especially if you fall victim to it then I am very sympathetic.
I do dislike the removal of content and never could get behind removing old content into the vault (seasonal... honestly doesn't make me feel bad at all). For the seasonal things, I see them "going away" as a certain line of models ending production, I still have mine (my weapons and armor) and got my use out of it.

As someone who never played Xbox during Halo’s golden era, whenever I ask people about the old Bungie, they always describe them with such passion. They were some of the best developers that the industry had to offer.
To see them as they are now is like an episode of the Twilight Zone: A greedy mismanaged company who only cares about getting as much money as humanly possible. I obviously understand that at the end of the day they have to make money, but there’s a big difference with needing to make money and charging $20 for an expansion that came out over 4 years ago that doesn’t even have all of its content anymore.

Remember when Bungie came out and said that the one weapon skin paid for the whisper mission? Everybody loved that. For a brief time, the community felt like the money they were spending in game was going towards awesome new content and not just lining the pockets of Bungie executives. When you're ethically running a business, being open about your finances will drive more people to your service, because it instills trust in your client base which leads to a prideful and proud community that will happily spend more money because they know it's going to better the service that they love. This is all vice versa as well. If youre not open about finances, it instills mistrust which leads to resentment and hesitation to spend more money. So I don't even know how they see this being sustainable long term.

Constant pop-ups directing me to purchasable items AND game content, constant paywalls stopping me from progressing without paying, layer upon layer upon layer of claimable rewards in a variety of menus so you always feel like you're "accomplishing" something. I quit long ago and I'm never coming back. The epiphany finally hit me during the most recent Iron banner. Tbh I actually didn't mind the new mode but I caught myself saying out loud once I turned on the game for my 3rd and final character "well, time to do my chores".
The fear of missing out on the newest meta guns or armor or what not has kept me engaged albeit reluctantly at times. The same bounties and bright dust farm. Same 5 crucible maps in rotation. The drip fed story leading no where. The thrill and wonder are gone and it's been gone longer than I can even pinpoint. I've taken a season off here and there throughout the years but, and I'm not saying this to sway any readers, this is it for me. Season of plunder took real life months to complete a story arc that could be summed up in a few sentences. Spider taking the coins for the health and betterment of the eliksni quarter is imo the perfect amalgamation of the destiny universe and it's player base. Myself included.
In D1 trials and iron banner were things to look forward to, now I don't even play trials and Iron banner is lucky to get 1 play through for pinnacle. Like many others, when light fall was announced I was down to go even at 100 bucks but it's happening before my very eyes and I keep ignoring the fact that I don't love this universe anymore. I don't love this grind. I HATE this seasonal model and the hunt for red borders going on and on within the hamster wheel. A story that's going to take at least a couple more years and couple hundred more dollars and god only know how many real life man hours to see through. My friends all left, and I'm the last of my kind.
I'm sure there is joy and satisfaction to be had by many a player in this universe but there's very little I haven't seen/done/accomplished and now it's just...something to play more out of habit than exploration and genuinely fun engagement. I won't be here for Lightfall and beyond but it's my hope that the fellow guardians that stay to see this through to the end are doing it for all the right personal reasons and not because you feel you need to. See you on the other side.

I used to not mind the idea of paying ~$100 a year for Destiny. The game seemed to be growing, and the vaulting of content was only a "one time fix" . But last year I realized how seasonal throwaway content completely took over the core game. I miss having lots of missions and exploring to do in Patrol zones and custom strikes when I didnt want to grind the seasonal content. Now it's all fomo, and the game never truly grows. I think the season pass is worth 10$, but when everything is timegated and needs so much grind that I never feel free to wander and explore, the game just feels like a chore instead of a universe to get lost in. And it's only made worse knowing most content will be gone/irrelevant in a few months. If there was an excellent mission in the season, it's just gonna get vaulted rather than brought into the core game. So the Destiny universe that you explore through core content never truly feels immersive or alive, its just the same old stuff on repeat while the seasonal content keeps moving forward leaving the rest of the game behind.

Final Fantasy XIV shows that a subscription payment can work, but Destiny 2's issue is the removal of content and replacing it with content that people get burned out of quickly. Just today, FFXIV released it's newest patch, which continues the post-Endwalker story, adds a new alliance raid (haven't done it yet), a new trial with it's extreme difficulty, a new dungeon, and class reworks. 6.31 will add Omega Protocol (Ultimate) which is another raid. 6.35 will see the new beast tribe quest and the continuation of the relic weapon storyline.
Destiny 2 just has the same weekly missions, a single new dungeon, 3 new exotic weapons, and a handful of new weapons. So I don't doubt many players (myself included) would quit because the lack of content that respects a players time doesn't support a subscription payment model combined with the ludicrous pricing of expansions. People will argue with me probably, but FFXIV, despite it's subscription payment, doesn't monetize the game to an insane degree (Mogstation isn't shoved in our faces like Eververse, don't even). The newest expansion for FFXIV, Endwalker, cost a total of $42 and came with all the updates that are free. Destiny 2 meanwhile inflates it's prices with every expansion, expects us to pay for each season pass (unless you buy the most expensive version of the expansion), buy a dungeon key (dumbest idea ever), and has a holiday battle pass as well as Eververse always being shoved in your face. The only reason why I bought Lightfall was because I wanted to play with my clan to avoid being kicked out. If Lightfall sucks though, that's it. Destiny 2 will be off my console and no amount of persuasion will get me to reinstall it again.
TLDR: A subscription payment can work in a game when it's done right and respects the player's time, but Destiny 2 can never have such a thing as a monthly subscription payment the lack of respect for a player's time will cause such a thing to backfire horribly on Bungie

The industry as a whole has been slowly finding new ways to charge more and put out less. Cut costs and maximize profits. I found BDobbins clip funny since the time that he made the video games were already watered down. Bungie currently is only following the evolution of what started maybe 2 decades ago. I remember buying games like the original Rainbow 6, Ghost Recon, Star Wars Battlefront, 1 and 2, etc decades ago that were full games at full price. It wasn't until a few weeks ago that I realized, I'm literally doing the same activities over and over to get better gear... so I can optimize my builds to do the same activities easier. It's monotonous, and on top of that, Bungie made the monotony into a monthly subscription service, and they monetized the transmog, dungeons, and now seasonal events like dawning, they've removed a massive number of weapons from being usable in most content only to reissue them in later content to hide how shallow it actually is. The one thing you leave out is games that are subscription based usually still charge you for expansions/season passes. And as much as the whole 'dont like it, don't play it' if often thrown....we do need to do that. One of the ways we can tell a game is successful is the player count. If that drops dramatically, that means less money they can get. And maybe it'll be enough of a kicker for Bungie to realize they need to be better. I told my friends who play destiny and are addicted to it that I’m not buying the next expansion. I’m so sick of the business model that’s become the normal. The lack of new content, the same copy, paste, repeat seasonal model. I literally hopped on day one of season 19 and pretty much laid out the whole season in my head. The only thing that took me by surprise was the Rev.0 having multiple “catalysts” and even that’s a poor excuse to my case. I’m done, I’m putting my time and energy towards new things.

I've been playing the Destiny franchise for over 8 years now. In the last 3+ years I've realized that can care less about their player base and would rather nickel and dime them to death instead. I realized this when Bungie bold faced lied about the Eververse. NOT 1 dlc or season pass was made free to the community as promised by Bungie through the purchases from Eververse. Bungie also lied stating that " nothing from D1 will be going forward into D2 " and yet they have resold us old previously bought and paid for content from D1 that was reintroduced as new content in D2. Bungie sunsetted weapons and gear to only resale it to us as new reskined content, and Bungie's list shady business practices can go on and on. I have never purchased anything from Eververse and nor will I ever. I've purchased every dlc and expansion at full price and now Bungie gives that content away as free....utter BS. I've invested so much time and money into the Destiny franchise that now I just play the chore of a game out of principle. Once I get all 3 of my characters pinnacle capped ( 3 wks-1 month ) I quit the game until the following season. After Lightfall I will be quitting the game for good due to Bungie's shady business practices, their greed, and their out right lies with no care in the world for their player base, but only their pockets.

Love the video (and the D1 footage from BDobbins....17 rounds for the shotty!! God I miss it!).
The idea that we've already been paying something like a subscription had occurred to me. Never forget that Luke Smith was a very hardcore WoW player, and that game has always been subscription. Plus you had to buy major expansions. They didn't have microtransactions at first, but certainly added them asap when it became obvious they could.
Fwiw, I'm done with D2, D1, and probably gaming full stop. Mostly because there are other things I want to achieve in life, and when I find a game I like, I don't just dabble in it.
FWIW tho, I'm not a total completionist - I hardly raid, don't play much pvp, don't care too much about titles, only do dungeons when fresh...but I like having 3 maxed characters, with a good range of weps to choose from, and the bright dust economy is a killer....
But what helped me realise that it was time to stop, is how un-fun and time-consuming the core game, and the grind of D2 has become. Seasonal activities are just escort or horde-mode missions, with tedious, predictably damage-gated bosses. And those bosses are a really good example of how the game has been (intentionally) stagnated. Raid bosses, strike bosses, dungeon bosses, seasonal activity bosses...they all do the same thing. Invulnerable until you do some busy-work to take their shield down, do 30% of their life, rinse-repeat. Same, same, SHAME. If Bungie were putting real effort into the game, there would be different types of bosses. How about one with crazy armor that unpredictably exposes a weak point, which has to be watched for by all the players, called out, then moved to and damaged. Bungie says "nope!" And meanwhile increased difficulty still means inserting champions which are just more damage gated enemies, that additionally drastically limit your loadout/build...gee, so much fun, how will I ever replace this game?! Pffft...
And that's where Bungo's money grabbing is so disappointing...at least Blizzard never vaulted anything, and basically kept the game relatively fresh. Bungo meanwhile needs to update ALL the core activities, and either won't or will take forever to do bits of it. Because they've figured out that instead of making/keeping the game itself fun, they can use FOMO and sucky rng to keep players chasing items, instead of logging in to have fun. They've turned the game into something much closer to a job, where you put up with tedious repetition in order to achieve a goal. Such a shame, because the mystical outer-space vibe, especially in the first game, had so much potential.

I understand people want Destiny to be an actual “subscription” but why? The DLC go on sale for a large %. It makes no sense. It’s very annoying paying yearly but it’s better then worrying about paying monthly. Because oh I can’t pay for the month, means I can’t play. Or I can’t play the expansions. I hate buying the expansions but I get my moneys worth and have fun. But I refuse to pay for skins and silver. At least expansions you pay a “fair” price for actually content. Skins you pay $10-$20 for colours. And maybe cool armour. Honestly a waste of money and why I feel Bungie doesn’t support the game as much. Because all they have to do is fill eververse full of shit and people will buy it. Pay hundreds of dollars then complain why the game is shit. I have my issues with the expansions and the prices. But don’t buy skins then wonder why this media is screwing us all over 😪 at least there are good devs out there. Especially Indies

I stopped playing Destiny 2 with friends and quitted the game completely because of Bungie's marketing practices. I grew tired of not being able to play with friends, I grew tired of them defending these practices, and I grew tired of feeling left out. This whole experience made me question the people I played in Destiny 2 with because whenever I want to play with them they mostly play in dlcs that I don't even have, feeling left out. Once I finally got the same dlcs they have, they play in other dlcs that are locked and can't be bought even when I have the money. I only talk to one of my friends from the Destiny 2 crap now because of how the others will defend the marketing practices, triggering me as if it were a PTSD. I don't want to talk crap about Destiny 2, only the way it's sold to the consumer, but it's hard for me to make clear arguments and whenever I talk about dlc prices, it always sounds like an attack to the game rather than how it's sold. I swear, if I'm told I simply have a skill issue of not being able to buy D2 content...
Edit: I don't want to talk crap about games, and I really hope people don't take what I say the wrong way. I will be happy to play D2 if D2 was sold the way it should be, but how D2 is being sold to the consumer makes me want to avoid D2 completely despite how good other parts of the game really is.

Well I mean let's steelman the positions of people who say they'd quit if Destiny ever became subscription based for a moment; they're saying they'd quit not because we can break down the price of season passes and expansions and divide them by months but rather that if Bungie WAS to add a subscription they'd still charge for expansions.

As a person who loves the resent content they put out I would like to say, I am a pretty heavy grinder, I don’t buy anything at full cost for expansions, I play what I like in the game and find joy. You may call me insane but I love pvp, currently know but before it was Dmt or nothing. I think that other aspects are lacking but I found that some of it to me is very fun just with the ability and gun play. The recent stories are quite good but still have problems, mainly the core playlists, however I find some people should just take a few weeks break and come back to play all the content they missed, I did this at the worst point in time and missed all of forsaken but still found fun.

i honestly wouldn't even mind paying per month, I normally only play for like a month at a time then have a 3 or 4 month break most years anyway so this would actually save me money as long as you can opt in and out as you please.
it would also make it more accessible for new players as they dont have to sink like $100 just to play the basic up to date content or worry about not having something from 3 expansions ago because they didnt get the premium annual pass. honestly I find the current system more predatory as is but thats also why I think it wont change, it makes the most money and they dont care if you dont play after a month until the following year, as long as theyve got your money theyre happy

I remember when the idea of a subscription in Destiny 2 was literally the devil to the player base. Now Bungie have convinced the player base that their hybrid model isn’t a subscription service and everyone doesn’t give a damn cause they buy everything anyway. Activision should seriously be proud of how Bungie has managed to brainwash and whip their entire fanbase into buying and playing LITERALLY anything!
