Why Destiny 2 is Genuinely a Bad Game

  • Destiny 2 is a bad game? Well... Destiny 2 is actually a good game but has such bad monetization that it overshadows and corrupts all potential positives Destiny 2 might have. In this video, I wanted to take a look at exactly why this monetization model has killed any and all love I had for this franchise, and Bungie Studios. Eververse Cash Shop is a large factor...

I’m an older player, 53. Destiny has been my favorite game of all time. I’ve sunk 17k hours into Destiny 1/2. I walked away from D 2 prior to this current season. The season model, well, had enough. My biggest issue is paying for the same guns, armor, content over and over. Most of the gun archetypes are from white, Destiny year one models.

I am exactly your age. I kind of quit on D2 right before Lightfail. I lost desire to play it, first time since beta D1. And now that that we have two juggernaut of games out, Diablo 4 and Zelda, and more greatness on the horizon, I have a bad feeling Destiny will stay in my dust. Diablo alone gutted my desire to play it. It is fabulous and gives me the same vibes as Destiny 1 used it. How can I say No to that?

I blame the community almost as much as Bungie. When people tried to protest all the monetization changes, there were just as many if not more people calling them haters and defending Bungie's inexcusable actions, so those players left. Now this is the state the game is in, and you can bet it will only get worse.

Bungie is also the reason why Naughty Dog hasn't released their Last Or Us: Faction multiplayer because Sony took Bungie's opinion as gospel when they had them consult on it. Likely, they didn't see a massive way to rip off the fan base and that can't stand in the world of Bungie multiplayer. The saddest part is, no matter how many of us raise our voices with concern and tell Bungie to stop their schemes, they will fall on deaf ears.
I have lost faith in the company that made my childhood and teenage years special and got me hooked up on gaming and FPS shooters.
This company is not the same Bungie who made Halo 1-reach.
This is not the same Bungie who made Destiny 1.
These are not the same brilliant minds who were behind Forsaken, the last great era of D2.
At this point, even a D3 wouldn’t save our playerbase because we keep on giving in to the soullessness of corporate greed.
It is over guys, we will never get those good old days of 2015-18 back.

Absolutely this. I couldn't continue playing after they removed so much paid content, and what sucked the most is that there was barely any backlash to it. Most of the playerbase just rolled over while at the same time defending Bungie. If the game was so bloated that you had to remove content to continue, maybe it's, ya know, time to make a new game. But no, they didn't want to give up the current playerbase and subsequent cash flow, so the consumers paid the cost.

Per the game's story and it feeling a bit lost from time to time, Jason Jones and a few other key people basically have pushed the concept of overarching heavy handed metaphors tied into philosophical and mythological concepts and references with basically every game's story he worked on, Destiny is no exception and pretty much an embodiment when it comes to a ton of nods to duality and no shortage of various morality parables.
This far along I'm not super surprised we've gotten moments of complete junkfood saturday morning cartoon level writing and story pacing because Bungie how much more could you really write about such vague simple complex, especially when there has been total retcons of tons of important stuff. It seems that they've basically been running the clock with Lightfall. The contents of this year were virtually never in the initial plans and Final Shape essentially got what was meant to be the real last year of D2's Light/Dark saga.
We basically got confirmation of this when Bungie put out a ton of articles before LF's release that alludes way more to a polished product by the time Final Shape launches and just how much is being put off for later despite an earlier promise(see nature of LFG further on backburner, among other things).
That all being said you aren't alone, a lot of people are playing Destiny due to that sunk cost investiture and it has just been a game people tolerate.

I also couldn't play the next expansion due to having to serve in my countrys military. After missing out on two major expansions I decided it was too costly to get back in to the game. It was pretty unfortunate for me since I really liked playing alongside the main story, I can't justify spending so much money and time to keep playing at the same pace I used to just to be able to complete most of the things in the game. That's not how buyouts work. The studio's owners and shareholders were given that money not Bungie as a whole. The company might have gotten some additional funding from their new owners, but nowhere near the purchase price of 3.6 Billion USD.
The reason for increased season prices? The same reason that milk and eggs cost more. The value of the dollar is down because of inflation, so prices for everything go up to compensate.

    • @taragnor
      @taragnor Год назад +2

@@zanzion3873 Yeah, I know Bungie didn't get the money. My point was that to be even valued in the billions, it means they've got a good amount of resources (otherwise they wouldn't be worth a $3.6 billion purchase). And really if they were taxing themselves to the max to produce the low quality content they release for D2, then why would anyone want to drop billions to buy them?
As far as the inflation argument, then why didn't it apply to anything else? Capcom was still able to produce a ton of content for Monster Hunter Rise's expansion Sunbreak. We had Elden Ring which was extremely content rich, and basically anything produced by Rockstar has a crap ton of value in their games. People bashed Cyberpunk, but the game still had a decent amount of content. Other companies are capable of delivering on content-rich experiences, where as Bungie's devs bitch and moan about something as trivial as making new Strikes.
No other major game company relies on low effort content as much as Bungie, except perhaps Blizzard with Overwatch 2. The reason they don't is psychological. Destiny 2 is built using mobile game design philosophy. The entire goal is to make playing it a habit. Giving people massive content dumps might burn them out.

Even if the progress is slow we are talking 2 weeks max for one person.

Destiny 2 is really hard for new players to join, because of the complicated story that just gets thrown straight at your face and the slow paced beginning, but after passing through that (leaving the Cosmodrome) the game was really fun and the mechanics were amazing, but I uninstalled the game after facing the surrounding paywalls that greet you after reaching rank 6 and the 1750 "power cap". I gave up on the ranks and tried doing some missions such as nightfall, but I couldn't get to play it because much of it was behind another paywall (forsaken pack). The last straw was when I thought "fine let's check how much it would cost me to enjoy the full game", 300€ (many of the items were in discount) not even the new call of duty was so expensive on launch day, triple A games were 60€ tops, and Bungie is asking for 300€?

My main annoyance is when Bungie says they do not wanna over deliver an expansion cause we do not want the fan base to expect the following to be better or more. They had the Taken King and Forsaken as both their best expansions to date. So when they say we do not wanna over deliver.. I say why not? do it once in a while or all the time cause it is pretty sad that out of all the expansions only 2 always tends to be the largest and most content they can dish out we keep mentioning or comparing.

    • @frogman7345

Taken King and Forsaken also needed to hit or there wouldn't be any destiny. I think what they saying with the "over deliver" line is reasonable because the pressure from potentially losing your job will lead to way to much crunch. But i also think that's not all bungie is a lot bigger now with more resources then they ever had. They should be aiming higher with final shape.

The last season I played to completion was Witch Queen. I've stepped away twice. The first was Season of Dawn when the community was doing the Bastion quest. The second was during Season of the Haunted. I got tired of the 3 month seasonal model, FOMO, sunsetting and content vaulting, having to completely adjust and revamp the core gameplay, like arc 3.0, and finally a story that doesn't make sense. I attempted to catch up on everything and reinstalled the game, but decided it was not worth the hassle. Didn't finish stasis fragments, learn strand, catch up on the story, PVP revamp, etc proved overwhelming. To this day the only things I've never done were raids and trials. In either game. But I engaged everything else and was happy with that.
Destiny 2 feels too much like a college course now! Waiting for resets, seasonal events and activities are a drain on time.

i tried out the game when they were doing a free-to-play weekend (it's why i made my battlenet account that i still technically have), and it was just confusing.
there wasn't really a story or quest line to follow, it just kinda dumped you into the world after a short tutorial and said "glhf". Stopped playing cuz of that.
tried it again when they launched on Steam and it was more of the same, so now it's just another dead game in my library. At least i didn't waste any money on it.

Bungie has straight up said they have no intention of making quality content or "overdelivering". They have straight up said they're only interested in delivering a bare minimum viable product. I know many fans are just holding out for the hopes of Bungie fixing their game but the fact is they won't and they don't care to. Destiny defenders are on weapons grade copium and aren't listening to a single statement from Bungie other than what they want to hear.

the other thing you forgot to mention in the video, for all the faults of warzone, warzone 2, fortnite and other battlepass games. most of them, if not all of them actually gives out premium currency in the battlepass itself incentivising you the player to grind out the battlepass and rewarded by having the ability to decide to buy skins and other things and even get the next battlepass for free. Destiny 2 doesnt even do this. thats crazy, considering how expensive everything is in destiny that a player needs to purchase. jesus.

Done plenty of day one raids, loved alot of the game but its never been anything like d1, I've completely been addicted to d2 I haven't enjoyed it since forsaken. I quit a few days ago deleted all my characters, even that you can't just delete all 3 you have to delete 2 and then make a new one🤣 honestly the second bungie started "vaulting" content that I've paid for and the fan boys defended it I knew that bungie would take that and just keep pumping the scummy practices. What a fall from grace this game and its community have took. Pvp is honestly disgusting 1 new map in 4 years. 1 strike in the new expansion its honestly laughable. I always enjoy your takes man and will still support. But I am finally free of the destiny digital crack🤣🤪

The only thing in destiny 2 that I feel like I earned from grinding was the Voidstreak sparrow which I think was from the revelry event long ago.
I keep it on my hunter all the time and it's my crown jewel. And feels like the only thing that feels like it matters. All my armor will change, all my weapons will change, but sparrow, that is mine and not many went through the slog of getting it in the first place.
