@@SightAfterDark Your welcome, I started watching your videos when you were reacting to Steely Dan. Another band from the 70's that I really enjoy to this day.
REO started around Champaign, IL, which is the home of the Univ. of Illinois. They were the first band that I saw in concert, I wasn't old enough to drive so my Dad took me to the show and picked me up later that night. It was in a Jr. College gym with no seats at all, just stand wherever you want. The album that this song came from, Live - You Get What You Play For, is one of my favorite live albums of all time. Almost every song is excellent but Golden Country and 157 Riverside Ave. are my favs.
I was in 6th grade when this came out. It was one of the first albums I ever bought. Classic REO but most people don't know about it because they know the later pop radio hits. The Gary Richrath guitar work on this album is phenomenal. I recommend you do the entire album. One of the best live albums EVER! Keep Rockin'!
@@michaelkeefe8494 I saw a poll that rated Gary as the #2 Most Underrated Guitarist Ever. #1 is Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits, but that's more "I know Knopfler is great, but I had to really listen to know HOW great he is." Whereas so many people don't know REO at all, or only know the later, pop-oriented #1 hits. (Gary still tries on those, but Kevin Cronin is clearly in control by then.) So Gary's a complete and utter surprise to so many.
This song was on FM album rock stations in 1972 and put REO on the map. After hearing this song, I was an REO fan and bought the album and saw them within a year in concert.
Gary Ritchrath, RIP... I'M sure you know now, but a great guitarist who was not forgotten.. Illinois... By his fellow greats... check out 157 Riverside Ave If you want Gary Ritchrath shred!!

i played this song (and the rest of the album) so many times when i was going to college at siu in the late 70s that i wore it out and had to buy a new copy.
Guys - They were one of the best 70’s and 80’s power pop bands. Thanks- I never heard this song before- what a banger. They have a deep catalog which you will want to experience.
As time goes by, I appreciate these songs and the musicianship more and more. In my younger days, I might have looked down on this form of pop rock - that is called the arrogance and ignorance of youth. I now know that all types of music can be appreciated, for different reasons. You should always keep an open mind.
Awesome reaction. You nailed it to the tee on the absence of these "deep cuts" that people dont get to hear. I'm fortune enough to have heard this live version on the radio back in the day. My reaction was the same as you guys! I cant get enough of this version of this song.
Just came across this one, and it's great. REO Speedwagon is a bunch of Illinois college dudes. It is also the name of an Oldsmobile, written on the blackboard by the prof on the first day of class in a history of transportation course. The student and his friends used it to name their band. Way back when, we listened to complete albums from start to finish, including getting up and actually flipping over the vinyl. That's how kids got turned on to these deep cuts.
All of their music was good. Some of their songs were never heard by 99% of people. Keep in mind this song came out in about 1973 and is equally true today almost 50 years later. Same with Jackson Browne and some of his more profound music such as Lives in the Balance. Can't say we weren't warned by the rebels. Which by the way brings to mind the song Rebel to Rebel by 38 Special. Its about the messengers (singers) "spread a little news around" (tell the story of whats to come if we don't start caring about what happens next). No its not about racism. In fact do some research about that band and the sibling relationship with Lynyrd Skynyrd. It is a tribute song to the brother that died in the plane crash. All of that music from that era I find timeless. They were trying to tell us something, and we still aren't listening.
To all this ugliness we must put an end. Before we leave we must make a stand! It is about the tyranny imposed on us by our governments and how we all must make a stand against it before we leave this plain. 50 years ago we were going through the same problems we are experiencing today. With all of your money your poor can be fed
You strut around and you flirt with disaster
Never really carin' just what comes after
Well your blacks are dyin' but your back is still turned

The time has come for you my friend
To all this ugliness we must put an end
Before we leave we must make a stand
Mortgage people you crawl to your homes
Your security lies in your bed of white foam
You act concerned but then why turn away
When a lady was raped on your doorstep today
Well your blacks are cryin' but your back is still turned
And your freaks are dyin' but your back is still turned
You better stop your hidin or your country will burn
The time has come for you my friend
