Famous opening of the Rhapsody in Blue, Gershwin Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Daniel Harding, Stefano Bollani, Olivier Patey Concertgebouw Amsterdam, 12.06.2015
Jealousy? I doubt it. First, is the guy next to him playing a Bb or an A or Eb? More importantly, he has to be happy for the orchestra just pulling it off. I’m sure he is like a airplane copilot in a difficult take off. Just happy to be airborne . 😃,
@@robkunkel8833: The clarinetist next to him is holding an Eb clarinet. Four clarinets are called for in the Ferde Grofe score: Bb, Eb, Alto, and Bass. The score also calls for other reed instruments including an oboe, and on tour with Gershwin the oboist was a young Mitch Miller.
What I find amazing is his persistence in getting the final note on pitch, which momentarily seemed in jeopardy. If you compare it to the “inventor” of that clarinet glissando, Ross Gorman, who played it while warming up in a rehearsal while Ferde Grofe was scoring Gershwin’s piano version for Whiteman’s orchestra and at the latter’s insistence kept it in the score and recorded it in 1924, the top tones are played faster but are entirely on pitch. Even the legendary Benny Goodman “squeaked” in that opening section when he was the guest soloist of the NBC Symphony under the baton of the volcanic Arturo Toscanini.
This version feeds into my delusions that I could learn this solo today armed with my whopping year and a half of middle school clarinet more than twenty years ago. I wish I'd worked harder at it back when I still had full lung function!
@@lucygoosey1765good morning thank you for asking! Well. Swamped with this strange year so some pastimes haven't had much time including this. Managed to play Shostakovich's waltz no. 2,which I love 🙂 learning piano also for the past couple of years 🙂
@@jackieeardley800 that's awesome ! i'm so glad you continued playing even throughout the strange year we have just had. i listened to that song and it's lovely! i can imagine your playing coming along very nicely if you have done that in one year. good luck for the years to come with both your piano and clarinet !! wishing you the best
Gliss from heaven ! Ive been playing for 8 days now and this is on my aspiration list. How long did it take till you could play it ? Like everyone else on here, i LOVE how your fellow musicians recognise your talent.
Well i asked how it was done to an actual pro clarinetist that knew and got the gist in a day, ofc, it isn't good yet to be able to actually perform for an audience but now it's more refining and making more "even" space between each note in the gliss
Oliver, this video ended just a second or two too soon. In the version that I saw before, you expelled a sigh of relief and stuck your tongue out at the end. That _really_ added to the expression of the piece. I was wondering if that expression was in the expression notes of score. Please provide the link to that slightly longer video.
The guy next to him is so proud omg I'd be too
"I raised that boy"
Do you think so? I felt like it looked more like a bit of hidden jealousy. :D

@@jimdrake3436 I don't see any Eb clarinet. The person admiring is an oboeist and the other person has a bass clarinet.
I love how perfectly it transitions from clarinet to trumpet at 0:51.
That’s fuckin amazing 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
It looks like he tossed the part over to the trumpet soloist with the movements he was making lol
That’s a hard part to get right and you can see in his face he knew him and the trumpet player got it right
Will Morris fr dang
@@alejandroterzado2068 maybe it's the hardest part for the trumpet player but it's DEFINITELY NOT the hardest part for the clarinetist lol
Perfect, he even coordinated his outfit to be all in Blue
What I love the most it's the face of your partners. They're loving it! I sure did. Bravo!
I would've just been there loving it and dying because I'd be 2nd and not get to play it
Yeah, his eyebrow at 0:19 is priceless
He's literally holding his hand from goosebumps!
He was amazing and made it look so easy when I KNOW it's difficult. I like the guy next to him seems to enjoy the front row seat lol.
The best I've ever heard it. Absolutely flawless
Oscar levant plays rapsody in blue

Agree
Nah man that gliss was too short
One of modern music's greatest improvisations. A clarinettist goofs on the solo during a rehearsal and the rest is history.
Not a goof, but goofing around. A joke on Gershwin during rehearsal, per Wikipedia. Thanks for the tip, I didn't know that.
First time I've heard it sound easy.
Best one yet
This version feeds into my delusions that I could learn this solo today armed with my whopping year and a half of middle school clarinet more than twenty years ago. I wish I'd worked harder at it back when I still had full lung function!
This is how I feel when I have a good reed.
Yeah, same
His chops must be swole to have that much control
my absolute favorite performance of this solo!
that transition between clarinet and trumpet was absolutely insane WHAGWHQGWA
BEST intro I've ever heard of Rhapsody in blue. Congrats from another clarinet player!
Dayum! That's the most awesome intro! Bravo! 😃
I love his little nod of accomplishment at the end.
A very hard piece to play, I know because I'm learning it. Well done to that man, he made it look easy.
I've just started to learn clarinet this week 😀 I blame this tune and specifically this video. It's perfect ❤️
how is your clarinet journey going 1 year later?

this is so amazing
Man, I remember hearing this song in fantasia, good memories...
Cannot play a note myself but my hearing is ok. The transitions are incredible, so smooth and slick 👏🏻 Played exactly how I'd expect to hear it
that has got to be one of the smoothest Rhapsody in Blue solos i have ever heard
i'm a clarinet player and man, those crazy glissandos are what I dream to achieve one day
omg he is tonguing trills, this guy is amazing

Did you do it yet?
Took me 2 months
@@shritan0 I'm a freshman in highschool who can almost play it but I started learning it a couple days ago
Did you do it? Took me about 2 weeks to learn it

That gave me 3 waves of goosebumps
C'est la gloire !
The guy next to him wanted that solo
Holy crap mans makin it look so easy. Makes you wonder how the hell it's the hardest clarinet solo in the repertoire
Thats some godly play there..... Damn..... Mind blown to mush.
Ive been coming back to this video at least twice a year for 4 years now.
Best opening I've ever heard....
I miss playing the clarinet.
That's just amazing! Ugh. Wow.
Magique, un rêve 😍
This is just perfect.
The clarinetist next to him just like "well, this is fun".
Flawless and so good he makes it look easy
So gorgeous! 😍
Love this!!

Awesome sound. His pal is just beaming the whole time.
Gosh he got really into it, amazing.
I love how it briefly turns into an ambulance siren.

Talented!
Idk if this is random but Brett saying Rhapsody in blue sounds like jazz is circling on my head.....
Nows there’s someone who loves his instrument
well done !
Bro is just feeling it
I haven't played in 50 years but I bought a $30 clarinet today and I'm learning to "smear".
The banjo player applauding too ;-)
the best
Nice to know I'm not the only one that does both point fingers for a high Bb.
When he's done with the solo he's gonna go steal the declaration of independence.
ufffffffffff, quiero oir el ensamble completo
The category is comedy hahaha check the descriptions
김유건 now that’s comedy
This doesn't fail to make me the stank face.
Such a good gliss
Beste versie ooit :)
Brawo 👏👏👏
0:42 como cuando eres nuevo en tu instrumento y escuchas tocar a tu maestro xD
Todos hacíamos las caras que hace el Oboista de al lado jajaja
That ghost note at 0:10 🤌🏼

i am only listening to this beacause of my school
Squidward been real quiet since
Proof that every clarinetist wishes they were Benny Goodman.
