    Dishonored is a 2012 stealth action-adventure video game developed by Arkane Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It was released worldwide in October 2012 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Set in the fictional, plague-ridden industrial city of Dunwall, Dishonored follows the story of Corvo Attano, bodyguard to the Empress of the Isles. He is framed for her murder and forced to become an assassin, seeking revenge on those who conspired against him. Corvo is aided in his quest by the Loyalists-a resistance group fighting to reclaim Dunwall, and the Outsider-a powerful being who imbues Corvo with magical abilities. Several noted actors including Susan Sarandon, Brad Dourif, Carrie Fisher, Michael Madsen, Lena Headey, and Chloë Grace Moretz provided voice work for the game.
    The game is played from a first-person perspective and allows the player to undertake a series of assassination missions in a variety of ways, with an emphasis on player choice. Missions can be completed through stealth, combat, or a combination of both. Exploring each level opens new paths and alternatives for accomplishing mission goals, and it is possible to complete all missions, eliminating all of Corvo's targets, in a non-lethal manner. The story and missions are changed in response to the player's violent actions or lack thereof. Magical abilities and equipment are designed to be combined to create new and varied effects.
    During its three years in production, several versions of Dishonored were developed. Before the creation of Dunwall-inspired by late nineteenth-century London and Edinburgh-the game was set to take place in medieval Japan and seventeenth-century London. During development, test players discovered methods of exploiting the available powers and abilities to achieve unexpected outcomes; instead of restricting these techniques, the designers attempted to redesign levels to accommodate them. Dishonored‍ 's music score was produced by composer Daniel Licht to represent London in the nineteenth century.
    Dishonored received generally positive reviews, focusing on the missions' individual narratives and the freedom available in completing them. Criticism fell on the overarching narrative, which was considered predictable, and problems in controlling the player's character. Following its release, the game won several awards, including the 2012 Spike Video Game award for Best Action-Adventure Game and the 2013 BAFTA award for Best Game, and was repeatedly recognized as the best action-adventure game of 2012 and one of that year's best games. Following its release, Dishonored was supplemented with additional content focusing on the assassin Daud and his quest for redemption. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game are scheduled for release in August 2015. A sequel, Dishonored 2, was announced in June 2015.

    You can clearly see the map art designer for Half Life 2 played a huge role in bringing this world to life. Wish he got more credit

    To be honest, Dishonored is more similar to Deus Ex more than Thief, since in Thief you get no innate abilities and have to really conserve supplies, while in Deus Ex and Dishonored you have lots of innate abilities and you don't have to conserve supplies as much.

    • @Bigdaddymittens

      Nathanael Eugene That's because the main level designer of Deus ex 1 worked on this. I think he was the director?

  • @MajorFret
    @MajorFret 9 лет назад +60

    I like to think of Dishonored more as Deus Ex than a stealth game. Sure, stealth makes life easy if you can pull it off, but you're not up shit creek if you get caught.
    I do agree the powers can be too powerful (granted they are fun to use). I hope No.2 tones down some of the powers down so you're not an unstoppable killing machine.

    • @Reloaded2111
      @Reloaded2111 9 лет назад +2

      Major Fret Human Revolution is easier than Dishonored when doing Pacifist run, because it has frontal non-lethal takedowns. Also, I was able to avoid conflicts in many cases just by talking my way in.

    • @MajorFret
      @MajorFret 9 лет назад +5

      Reloaded2111 That is true, but the general feel of the combat of the game felt more like a Deus Ex style game with exploration and choice in combat. Speech wasn't a priority in Dishonored like HR but I feel that suits the story. Corvo couldn't afford to be talking to everyone he met.
      Admittedly the pacifism felt shoe-horned in. I kinda felt it didn't suit the game and some of the less lethal options for the main targets is to just get them to leave Dunwall and never be seen again seems risky for Corvo. I could understand knocking out guards if you're into the whole 'they're just following orders' thing, but I think the player should have been forced to get his hands bloody, but I guess that's me being a violent person >:)

    If anyone is on the fence with this one, now's the time. It's only $4.99 on the Steam summer sale right now. The entire bundle with all DLC included with the main game is only $10. Even if it is not a perfect game, definitely worth it at that price.

      2SSSR2 I think you can get the good ending even if you kill a few people. I managed to avoid killing all but one or two enemies per level (with the exception of the final mission, where killing enemies doesn't count towards the ending), and still got that ending.

      Irondrone4 as long as you dont kill more than %20 of total population you get low chaos ending . Also game becomes pretty easy when you watch and learn npc movements. Finished the game first time with clean hands and undetected achievement on hard difficulty . Second time on very hard high chaos . If you are aimed to do low chaos undetected . You only need to upgrade blink and agility, slow time too if you want more control but its up to you , in the end though Daud has better abilities than Corvo . Improved blink , tethering ( aka Pull ), stun mine makes Daud a better low chaos character .

    Great game. Does need two things:
    1) New game plus or some other way to replay old levels with all your new shiiiit.
    2) Some mode to encourage you to replay with lethal combat rather than stealth, rather than making you feel like a dick for using the weapons they give you.

    I wanted to really love this game but ultimately ended up a little underwhelmed. It had everything going for it with style and Thief inspiration. There was a total disconnect with the main character that made me feel nothing for Corvo which lowers the immersion somewhat. The game was much too short, even playing stealthily throughout. Some of the powers are awesome, while others are lackluster. And you could not use more than simultaneously to really get creative (like use Blink while in Possession) The ending was terribly unsatisfying and anticlimactic. Still like the game alot though and looking forward to Dishonored 2.

    Ok, here is what I don't understand. As someone who has played the game time and time again, using multiple play stiles and unlocking some of the hardest achievements in the game I have always failed to see why some people see this as a stealth game. Just look at the upgrades/spells you get: there are 4 spells which fit in both 'ghost' and 'fighter' play stile (Blink, slow time, Possession, Agility), you then have 4 which fit in the 'fighter' play style (Bloodthirsty, Vitality, Devouring Swarm, windblast), and then you have a whopping 2! in the 'Ghost' play style, 2! (Darkvision, Shadow Kill)!!!!!!!!
    That coupled with the just plain bad stealth of the game. It just has last gen line of sight pseudo-stealth. Right so they can see me if I'm in complete shadows at the corner of a dark room but I am able to JUMP BEHIND SOMEONE on a MARBLE FLOOR and they don't even question it and everyone views that as remarkable stealth game play!?!?!?!?!?
    Stealth games do not have a 'Stealth Mode'! That's what separates Thief from Oblivion. Don't get me wrong, it's a fun and enjoyably game it's just not a stealth game.

    I've never played Thief, so I can't say anything about the similarities and such. But here it goes:
    Personally, I've found that as I've continued to replay the game a few times, I've grown to resent it. Depending on your playing style (especially for achievements like clean hands, or collecting ALL THE THINGS) you either fly through the levels like nothing on any difficulty or you can just sit there, looking for everything.
    As for the plot, I find the actually dishonoring ridiculous as well, and then after the exposition, it seems kinda flat to me. I also wish there was more incentive for the Outsider to grant Corvo powers. It really seems like the Outsider gave Daud and Corvo powers for his personal amusement.
    I really love the art-style; it's very distinct and unlike many other modern games. I would like to see the textures a bit smoother; but as I've said, I found it very refreshing.
    Overall I enjoyed the game a fair bit. I'd give it a 7/10.

    • @garielmartir9876
      @garielmartir9876 8 лет назад +2

      Ummm excuse me, but the Outsider actually did that for his amusement(sort of). The Outsider is a neutral being and he even says that and also mentions that he has "great interest; you fascinate me; I expect a great show;" etc(depending on your actions) so yeah, he gave them the mark because of their role and circumstances on the events of Dunwall, but it is also to test them and see how they(Daud, Corvo) use their powers and how the events unfold by the usage of said powers.

    I still love Dishonored, but having sunk a ridiculous amount of hours into replaying it different ways, taking different routes and finding things I'd previously missed, I admit it has it's problems, but they're not the problems I generally hear people talking about. A main one for me is inconsistencies in the games world logic.
    One example: You are told that the more dead bodies there are, the rats will come, the more the plague spreads, the more weepers are created, so I thought, if I used shadow kill which dissolves the bodies into ash, there's no body to worry about, hence less rats, less plague, less weepers, but the game doesn't seem to take the absence of bodies into account. I played through the whole game being stealthy as fuck and shadow killing everyone and still got the bad ending. It's not so much the actual end I'm talking about it's more to do with what certain characters say and do, even though they'd have no way of knowing what an asshole I'd been.
    Also, the main game lied to me about how visible I was to enemies. In the main game I could hide under a table and no-one would see me. I hide under a table in one of the DLC's and as soon as a guy walks passed he comes straight for me. I was like "Fuck you, Dishonored told me this was okay!"

    This is quite a good game with a unique art style, though stealth games are not really my cup of tea. Contrary to the reviewer I found it quite difficult if you want to play undetected and not like a Rambo. The endings seems to be related to how much chaos you have caused.

    I don't find to this game to be all that similar to Thief at all mainly in terms of stealth. I found the stealth to very underwhelming as a whole due to the reasons you pointed out. The combat is good but I do get annoyed when people call this game a masterful stealth game when it really isn't.

    this is a broken stealth game IMO, I mean if you fail at stealth what happens? you just anihilate the enemy, you are an OP power house, there is no tension "I am screwed if they see me" if the enemy notices you, you just cut them into pieces, if the player is even more powerfull out of stealth mode than when sneaking your stealth game has some serious issues, what is the point of sneaking when you can single handedly just kill everybody, try this in thief or splinter cell or in any other clear cut stealth game

      You get a much better ending if you play the game stealthy.
      If you get caught in a more traditional stealth game like Looking Glass Thief I would almost always load my last quicksave, whereas when I get caught in Dishonored I'd more likely kill everyone who caught me in Dishonored and suffer the consequences because that was more fun. Again you get a better ending and bragging rights by not getting caught at all.

    • @jancz357
      @jancz357 8 лет назад

      ***** that's good and all, but the game is also designed with the "guns blazing" kind of approach, therefore the player character must be equiped to deal with every situation, it a kind of power fantasy, yes the better ending is a good thing but it's the same motivator as collecting unique achievements, "shoot a guy in the head while doing backflip ten times in a row" if you fail at the 8th attempt it sucks but that is the only punishment, you just don't get the achievement, but the game works fine without it, if you don't care about achievements, the game suddenly lacks tension, and that is my point, you can try to play pure stealth, but if you fail, the only thing that happens is that you get pissed your run wasn't flawless

    Just a stealth aficionado's opinion, 2012 was a crap year for games, but Dishonored is a treasure and I have replayed it a few times with different styles and different spell upgrades. Viktor Antonov's (of Half Life 2 fame and glory) influence can be seen in the City17-esque look of Dunwall. The Tallboys (reminiscent of Half Life 2's striders) were a truly scary foe for the first go-round, but it is very gratifying to get the jump on them and stick them with your sword.

    This game is awesome. but it has its fair share of problems.
    First things first... when playing the PC version... MY GOD, the engine is so well optimized that there's virtually no loading screens! THAT'S AMAZING... but if you combine that amazing fact with the quick saves and quick loads... then there's no need to have a health bar or death screen at all!
    That fact with also combined with the super powerful powers one has... makes the game TOO EASY. I mean, you could easily say.. "I'm not going to quicksave ever" but why not? if it is there to use?
    That kinda takes away the rush and anxiety of having to nail an objective.
    This is one game that could benefit from a fair save point system. That way the rush isn't taken from you while in battle

    • @mooganify
      @mooganify 8 лет назад

      Idk, it is kind of odd how for some games I hear, "well just dont use the powers", and sometimes I don't. I made it harder for myself by not using any power-ups at all but thats just me; and even with that someone should say I shouldn't have to.
      But its like the experimentation with the ways to kill targets, there may be multiple ways to kill or not kill someone, but for the most part people are not going to experiment and just take the easiest option presented.

    I'm a huge Splinter Cell fan and one of the more recent stealth games I really loved was Styx: Master of Shadows. The lack of indication really put me off of the game at the first try. Trying Dishonored was annoying to me for that reason alone. A normal player might enjoy the combat alternative if he's spotted, but I prefer to know once I'm noticed why is that happening. That, combined with the fact that it is an FPS stealth game (which also put me off of Thief years ago) makes for a really confusing stealth experience.
    I've always thought that what lies at the core of a great stealth game is being able to see. FPS already narrows your line of sight, but the fact that there is no way for the game to tell you what you're doing wrong when you're detected is a huge turn off for me.
    I really want to try it and I want to enjoy the voice over by Susan Sarandon, John Slattery and Michael Madsen, but I don't know if I want to have the same disappointment with it. Thanks for making the video, I guess I will see if I have another crack at it.

    The light and shadows don't actually affect your visibility in Dishonored so it's all based on line of sight and distance to the enemy which kind of sucks. Also I found that you can be leaning out from behind a corner in plain sight of a guard but because your body is not visible to them, you aren't.

    This reminds me in many ways of 'Styx: Master of Shadows', though it would be Styx that's inspired by Dishonored and not the other way around.
    You can buy Dishonored with all the DLC for 25 Euro on Steam - at least until Feb. 12. (2016, 6hat is).
