You missed the actual use case where this becomes extremely noticable - dark mode + dark room with low brightness (which is how most people will use it in a dark room). The UI elements as you navigate between dark apps have a really legit bad border around them. E.g the white bar at the bottom has a 1.5cm thick square bloom around it. I believe it's a software issue unless Apple have lied about the screen specs but it is bad right now.

EDIT… the blooming issues are actually real, and in some situations pretty terrible… I see it more when the brightness is turned down in a dimmer room rather than with the brightness up… the pictures people are showing are NOT just a camera effect, that’s exactly what I see with my eyes, it’s a dynamic range problem apparently, it’s not a contrast problem… by tuning the brightness up in your test you hid the problem, it’s more noticeable when the brightness is set where you’d actually use it…

To all of you who are deciding whether to get an M1 12.9 iPad Pro, let me tell you that I watched these kind of RUclips videos and convinced myself blooming wouldn’t be that bad, oh boy was I wrong . Dark mode is just awful on this screen. Whenever there was a black screen with anything brilliant on it blooming was present . I could’ve lived with it if it had been just a little “glow”, but it was a 1-in glow around anything white. It was present at every brightness level in dark pitch rooms and partial black rooms. It is a shame such a nice and expensive device has this much of blooming.

@@ZackSNetwork this is not true. Oled is not very far ahead of micro or nano led, and you conveniently left out by far the worst part of oled... burn in. It is a huge problem. Try playing a specific console game on an oled that has the static icons and borders, it will be burned into your TV permanently in little to no time. Also oled pixels lose their vibrance fairly quickly, couple of years and your screen will not look as good because the pixels have degraded. It is inevitable with organic leds. Also uneven wear, if you watch things with black bars, the pixels turned off will age less than the active pixels. Eventually you will see the actual bars being brighter than the rest. Now miniLED may be in the middle of standard LCD and OLed. Note, Samsung is the top manufacturer of OLed for Apple and EVERY other major smartphone and tablet maker. speaking of display performance alone, MicroLED will be on par with OLED without the burn-in issue it will be more durable.

In terms of brightness and efficiency, OLED depends on the material used on the O. the best OLED Panel to date is S21 Ultra (Samsung’s own M11 panel, better than their E4 [E for export]). It has a max brightness of 1500nits and high power efficiency at high brightness

I did a few tests with my blooming issue. One of the tests is really revealing… I put three tiny white dots on a black background in the notes app. The bloom is super noticeable and makes a perfect 1 inch square around each dot. If I press my finger over the dot to completely cover it, the bloom square remains, so it’s definitely not an optical illusion. It’s exactly what it looks like in the photos you were showing from people with the same issue. (I can take a picture with my Sony A7SIII if you want a good example) If you look at the screen in a dark room, you start to see it everywhere. It’s definitely a bigger deal than it looks from the tests you were running. Granted your test were good for people who are concerned about how it looks with movies, but even as I type this in a dark room with the screen dimmed low, the bloom is super distracting. I had some really hight hopes for this screen and it seems it’s only delivering in daylight scenarios.

@@ZackSNetwork the problem is caused by the fact that there are not any mini led along the edges of the display, so the pixels that are located in that area look less bright, simply because there are no leds under that pixels to fully lit them.

Please show using stock apps, like Settings, Files and Reminders in dark mode with normal brightness settings in a dark room. Something is up with the way non video apps are being displayed. The blooming is way worse. It actually appeared resolved right after the update to 14.6 earlier today but has since returned. I do think their are some improvements Apple can make to how it is controlling the local dimming zones in their stock apps (not during photo or video playback) with expected (normal) screen brightness.

I understand that all these extra backlights are actually something good... HOWEVER because of the inherent limitations of LED screens bad collateral effects may happen with generational improvements. Is good that the backlights at the rest at the screen aren't on, but when this makes so much obvious the ones that still are, it's really worth it? "Mini-LED" may work as an alternative for OLED, but not with this amount of backlights, it needs much more than this. Right now this screen isn't really ready.

TV sets with local dimming uses algorithm on per frame basis to dynamically map the contrast, for instance, they lower brightness in certain scenario to reduce blooming. TV processors do a lot more to make image better than an honest presentation. iPad and most HDR monitors don't do it because they expect videotographers use them as reference display.

mine has the blooming issue, it’s not as bad as the photos online, but it’s there. it’s mostly only noticeable in the complete dark room and high contrast scenes. it’s not the glowing on the edges of bright objects against the black background that border me the most, but the haziness it causes during complex scenes. to be fair it’s totally normal for any display with FALD, my samsung QLED TV does the same just not as bad, and it only has like a hundred or so zones vs 2500. it also has a setting to control the intensity of the local dimming( allowing users to choose between sacrificing some of the near black details to get deeper black or sacrificing some black levels for a brighter picture. I hope apple will be implementing some sort of similar settings in the future or at least improve the algorithm used to address the issue. i have compared it with my tab s7+, cx oled and 2020 ipad pro, oled wins in dark room, mini led wins in bright room, same story as modern day TVs each has its own strength and weaknesses both are way better than the ips on the 2020 and older models.

Or will all new iPad Pro 12.9’s suffer from this? Very noticeable pop in and out of bloom effect when switching to different screens. Hoping it’s a software issue that can be addressed cause it’s very annoying to see white, then a shade of bloom then crisp black.

@@dopemind8160 nah. I got kind of used to it. It’s kind of a drawback of the mini LED. The brothers and colors are worth the little bleed I notice while watching movies in the dark.

Mini-LED is not OLED, is is more similar to LCD. Micro-LED is similar to OLED.
