I usually don’t get too emotional but this hurts. I have had the pleasure to visit Lahaina multiple times, including just last month. So sad to see the places I cherish vanquished from eternity. Hopefully the banyan tree can rise from the ashes and symbolize a new Lahaina. Stay strong Maui. Mahalo for all you have given me.

Just devastated to see the destruction of this beautiful little town, which we had loved visiting: the little speciality shops and the historic buildings and the cafes. So sorry for those you have lost loved ones, homes, property, businesses and livelihoods. Such a tragedy for Maui and the Hawaiian people.

For some it is just chance, but mostly it's down to materials of construction. They might look entirely fine from a distance but you can't really assess the inside. Seems to me the buildings which remain intact among the debris are brick/concrete, most of the domestic homes there were decades old and made of wood. Of course wood burns and concrete/brick doesn't.

Same thing happened to us in Paradise CA November 8th 2018 Our homes were leveled to ash but most of the trees were still standing houses, steel buildings turned to ash, cars, trucks flipped upside down but still the gas tanks were still intact, We were hit so back in Paradise 11.8.2018 by Directed Energy Weapons looks the same as Paradise did, Maui, looks to be the same MO, as Paradise, Fire was. Cars burned out even the glass windows some of the cars in Maui had large holes in the hood of the cars and trucks looks like a Direct Energy Attack to me but trees next to the cars still had leaves on them. This in my humble opinion is another attack on our towns, Agenda 21 burn the people off the land and take everything away from them. The Winds came up soon as the fire started right? Just like in Paradise and many mountain communities in Northern California, Prove me I'm wrong. Learn what's happening people our towns are under attack none other than by the New World Order People taking everything away from us, burning our towns down. NO EARLY WARNING SYSTEM in place tells me they wanted lot's of Causality’s Death's just like in Paradise we had no warning at all these people they aren't playing they are Dead serious about destroying everything the people have worked so hard for. I sure wish the people would get a clue. Oh thanks mainstream media for NOT Doing any investigating on the fire your worthless media covering up the CRIME Against the People of Maui. May God Help us all, against these EVIL People behind the crimes against humanity. Cars and trucks lined up along the side of the road with glass and wheels melted no trees next to the cars and trucks melted just like Paradise. When will people realize our towns are under attack one at a time.
a friend of mine wrote a book called Paradise Lost The Great California Fire Chronicles 109 pages and it catalogs all the fires and weaponry used on the fires in CA between 2008 thru 2018 by James W. Lee you can find the book online.

A bit of luck but fire resistant building materials and a lack of flammable materials around the house make huge differences when it comes to which homes get destroyed and those that just sustain smoke and relatively minor damage. If you live in an area which is potentially susceptible to forest / grass fires, please keep this into consideration. Keep your yard clean by removing dry materials, ensure any firewood you may have is away from the home and remember the extra cost of siding and roof materials has the strong potential of keeping your home from burning in these type of situations. It can even help your neighbours from keeping the fire from spreading too. Embers can fly a long distance and land on your roof, decking or bushes near the house and cause you to lose your home. There are many other things you can do. By no means am I blaming anyone, but just throwing out the information to make folks aware. I spent 30 + professional years dealing with these type of situations post fire and have seen preventative measures save homes.

As was the case with the California fires a few years ago, which some speculated were purposely started by laser technology, we have whole houses reduced to white ash while nearby trees remain standing. When I think "wildfire," I'm thinking wildlife and plants are destroyed, with plants being the first to ignite. The white remnants, as opposed to the expected charred black remains of typical house fires, look like the aftermath of 9-11 at Ground Zero.

Condolences to those who lost a loved one & sending blessed prayers to everyone in Maui. Before rebuilding, Maui homeowners please learn from the 1993 Laguna Beach fire where only one home in Mystic Hill was the only left untouched by it--was spared due to its construction and landscape design. The house featured double-pained glass which helps keep heat from igniting the draperies inside the house, a tile roof sealed with concrete on the ends to keep sparks out, and stuccoed eves to hide any exposed wood. Landscaping zones of fire resistant plants also helped. Just some suggestions. The unexpected has already happened. We must learnt from it…Zhang in there and don’t ever sell your land. Build a yurt or tent to live even if y have to temporarily. If everyone work together, help to clear the debris, build a new community, a memorial to those who died and to ensure that this time, newly elected local & city gov use federal funds to rebuild infrastructure that are safer would be important. Fire everywhere at the top who was too lazy to think about this possible scenario of safety concerns. Lahaina can only exists and thrive again when you persist & believe she has a future, now and into the future.

I’m literally thinking something about the power grid here has to be flawed. The second thing I noticed in this footage is that the surrounding green space isn’t torched. The fire concentrated in the buildings and infrastructure within the city. Why? What caused the city to become an inferno, while the surrounding fields and open grasslands remained unscorched . Something seems very strange about this. I live in the Canadian Rocky Mountains and am used to forest fires that engulf everything in their path. Why did this fire only destroy the town itself? Our atmospheric system is completely different from Hawaii, but it just seems extremely weird to me. Can anyone explain this phenomenon?

These home have hundreds of flammable items in them that you won't find in a forest. You don't have a car with fuel every 100 yards in the Rocky Mountains. You don't have gas mains running through streets for miles. In addition to this materials aspect, this fire was being fed by a hurricane also. Near drought conditions affect built up areas more than it affects sheltered forested areas. All of these things combined to create the circumstances for this disaster.

We're all sorry -- still -- for the victims, loved ones, businesses, survivors from Laguna Beach's (Calif.) own fire 30 years ago. That said:
the contributing conditions, depth of disaster, enormity of destruction, high level of loss of life, etc. differences between Laguna Beach then and the Lahaina inferno August 2023 with 80 mph winds assuring the fire wouldn't stop and WOULD spread to the water's edge and beyond are 'apples and oranges' -- to use an expression as old as time itself.
How many of Lahaina's hundreds of nuked houses and buildings and structures would have survived -- if only the owners had used "double-pained glass," "stuccoed eves to hide exposed wood" and "landscaping with fire resistant plants"?

It's almost like the fire is controlled by remote and guided to just destroy certain areas and things. For fire to make it's way to boats on the water and burn them with the same force getting hot enough to explode the gas tanks then jump across water to the next boat. Or areas where there is no structure but there is grass, trees, etc it seems the fire just skipped that area completely. I have never seen fire do this in the past.

It was stated that it was under control. The area was left unattended after being "under control". Winds picked up due to hurricane off-shore and a high pressure to the north. The previously "under control" bush fire still had embers. The embers reignited due to high winds fueling it........ 'unattended' and not monitored embers not completely extinguished reignited! The rest is now history. Draw your own conclusions.

Building planning and approval is so important because a few years ago when there were catastrophic fires in Greece their towns were very close to the ocean like Lahaina but many older Greeks think that planning rules don't apply to them and they were putting up cheap beach shacks and extending their beach homes without permission. Gates and fences by locals were put up illegally right near the coast and so people fleeing the flames couldn't make it to the ocean because they were stuck behind locked gates and illegal buildings blocking their access points.......That is why beaches are open like that in America so if you have to flee a fire You see the ocean and drive to the end of the road for easy beach access.

Thanks for the video... I've seen a lot of what a serious fire does (California, etc), but I don't recall seeing such devastation, not to mention loss of life... I can't get over the swaths of structures almost completely raised into an ash stain, and then, you have home right in the middle (both sides, or all sides) that look like there wasn't even a fire near them... One day it would be good to know if these are all new build vs. older homes and businesses.. Wow.. What a scorched earth nightmare.. :(

I managed to get the reddit link off: From a resident of Maui:
“What you’re not hearing from our local government…
I just got out of a meeting where I was informed by someone in the Mayor’s office about developments that are being kept from the public. I am not a conspiracy theorist and I don’t want to make trouble but here’s what I’ve heard:
    - The amount of fatalities is expected to be more than 500 but less than 1000.
Many of the fatalities will be children who were at home because they canceled school. Parents worked and were not there to evacuate the children. Kids had no idea they needed to leave and by the time they noticed their homes or apartments were on fire, it was too late.
    - The government is worried about how we will react when we learn that the fire department left the fire earlier in the day and claimed it was 100% contained knowing that the winds were expected to be 70mph by the afternoon. This is against all fire control protocols. The fire department should not have left the original fire unattended.
    - They are scared that the public calls for accountability will be more than they can control and protests and riots will occur.
    - They plan to lock down Lahaina for several months. It will take months to clean up the hazardous and environmental contamination.
    - They won’t have enough housing for All the displaced.
-There were 2,000 unaccounted for this morning. They have a list where they are trying to keep track. They found 700 today. But there are still 1300 missing.
    - They are very worried that the community is going to freak out when they find out how not a single fire truck responded to the fires.
    - The emergency sirens were not activated (hurricane sirens) and loss of life could have been kept down by better emergency management which utterly failed.”
If you ask me, this is not incompetence, it’s a planned crisis
