- The H4 subway cars, built by Hawker Siddeley in 1974, made its final run during the morning rush hour on January 27, 2012 and retired at the age of 38.
Known for its unique quirks, these trains often caught the attention of non-transit enthusiasts while in its last days of service:
-ceiling fans blowing air from the roof
-ultra comfortable faux-leather bench seats
-psychedelic orange/beige/brown interior styling from the 1970s
Unlike its successors, the H4s will not have a second life in a different city, with some being converted to TTC maintenance trains and others sent directly to scrap. Only successor H5 (1976) and H6 (1986) subway trains will be rebuilt by General Electric in the USA before being shipped over the Atlantic Ocean to serve the blue line of LAMATA's Ekorail in Lagos, Nigeria.
The Toronto media outlets gave a silent farewell to these H4 subway cars. (I'm surprised they even covered it at all, given the GM Fishbowl's bus retirement just a month ago received no media attention at all and are far more iconic in a North American context)

As of June 2013, the only trains still in use by the TTC are the H6's, T1's and the brand new Toronto Rockets (TR), as well as the SRT trains too.
Wow, these trains were younger than our oldest trains on the London Underground network and they get replaced. Our oldest trains were 51 years old when they were replaced in 2012.
i will always cherish the memories on the h-series trains
The TR cars is on the Yonge-University-Spadina line and T1 cars is on the Bloor-Danforth line
In a couple years time, all Bloor-Danforth line trains (similar to the Sheppard line trains) will be T-1 subway cars, while all Yonge-University-Spadina line trains will be the Toronto Rocket subway cars, as the older H-5 and H-6 subway cars are decommissioned.
@SuperWorldfan360 As of October 2012 the TTC has only 5-8 H5 trainsets estimated so far, they are the next ones to be retired now, as for the H6's they will possibly be still around until 2014 around the same time when the TTC's new streetcars start entering revenue service.
Why didn't they retrofit the cars w/AC? That's what was done to the oldest cars still running on the New York subway. They're from 1964!! --- still running, but had AC put in many years ago.
As of August 2023, the only trains still in use by the TTC are the T1's and the TRs. TRs being on Line 1 and 4, and the T1s on Line 2. Line 3 (and the SRT trains) are now gone.
This is a good thing that the H4's are retired, cuz these loyal riders who take the Bloor-Danforth line will be happy to say that they will no longer have to suffer through those hot summer days without air-conditioning on these really old H4 subway cars. Still, it'll be a shame not to see those really old subway cars like these anymore, especially that there are no more subway cars equipped with vinyal seating.
EVERYTHING WASN'T REUSED AND ARE ALL SCRAPPED, I'M UPSET ABOUT THIS SO MUCH
Those are the H5 cars on the Yonge-University-Spadina line as well as the H6 cars on the Bloor-Danforth line.
@cnrail16 No, there are no plans to sell the any of the older subway models to the Milton Railway Museum, most H4's were sold to scrap, as for the H5's and H6's they have been sold to Nigeria.
I remember it so awesome h6 T1 TR
I Wish I Was On The H4
So do I. The H4 came out in 1974.
I like the T1s and TRs
@Cam Walton Cordeiro They were NOT around in 1969's they entered service in the mid 1970's and were in service for more than 35 years.
The h4 rode on the bloor danfourth line. at around 1969 they were on the YUS line.
They said that there is about 10 or 11 of those new Toronto Rocket trains on the line now, it makes sense that's the number of new TR trains that they have avaliable for service so far, I believe they only use 6 or 7 of those new trains during the work week, there is not as many of them seen in service during the weekends as they use about 3 to 4 of those new trains, is that correct?
@Ronnie Gimenze They do have some H4's still, but only for work cars.
good thing h4s are used as work cars
so I won't miss them that much
Now we only have the chopper control Hawkers in service!
What do you mean what? It makes me feel that the entire H5 fleet is almost retired. I actually was meaning that it sucks that there are very few of them left in the fleet.
Now that the TR's have arrived retire all H4 and H5 subway cars but keep the H6 and T1 subway cars intact for at least another two years though.
Only if TTC had not ordered the TRs, we would have still had the H4s!
it actually is, believe it or not. More expensive than selling it to scrap, at least.
I could win the lottery. I would buy 2 of them. Makes a great camp.
True, but the TRs have 10% more capacity, which is good, since the subway's ridership is always going up...I didn't want the H4s retired either.
@SuperWorldfan360 The H6's should last for another two years hopefully.
I WAS NEVER ON THE H4 TRAINS
I miss the comfortable seats on the H4s. Now the other trains are in retirement process. They should keep all trains forever!
Yeah
H4 was the best
Thirty eight years? That's nothing. Here in New York City, the oldest subway trains are fifty years old. Our newer r160 trains have air conditioning too, unlike the old r32 subway cars. Those cars are remembered for their shiny, corrugated, stainless steel exteriors. Less than forty are left in regular service on the New York City subway. But I wonder, why so soon for the h4 trains?
ikr
NO KEEP THE H4 FOREVER :(
@308813062 A lot of people don't miss them. :D They said the bench seats were literal pain in ass
Thats Impossible Since The H4 & H5 Has Retired. Now Its All H6 In Service As If Now.
R.I.P H4 Subway Car
there now 3 car Sheppard line trains only 1 set
I was on that train on its final day, can you see me in that video? I'm in a orange jacket.
Where
@AlexRampaul If you like, you can check out my RUclips channel, cuz, I have posted some videos on the H4's final trip on January 27, 2012, or you can type in the RUclips search box, "Final day of revenue service for TTC's oldest H4 subway train".
@cnrail16 It's really expensive to do that.
big spenders in CANADA WITH TAXPAYER DOLLARS ...THESE subways could last 100 years...complaining over plastic seats would still complain if they where velvet seats
I want the TRS to retire now and put back H4s instead
Same
@308813062 I guess they could have preserved one...
the TR's are slower than the old trains. the older trains are faster
The TR has sucky chimes :(
@SuperWorldfan360 As of Oc
Bye H4
