Jameis Winston: "Crab Legs Given To Me, Not Stolen" (Full Segment HD)

- Jameis Winston spoke with Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh and members of his staff.
Harbaugh pushed Winston to explain the incident in which he was caught on a security camera taking crab legs from a Publix grocery store.
Winston explains that he wasn’t shoplifting, but rather had a deal with a Publix employee where he was gifted free food.
While who knows how true or not this is, it does seem to make sense. Winston and FSU coach Jimbo Fisher couldn’t say that he was being gifted free food, because that could be construed as a violation of NCAA rules, so it made more sense to frame it as a juvenile mistake. Fisher memorably said that Winston wasn’t used to shopping at that supermarket and had been distracted when carrying out the crab legs.

Yea I go to Hueytown and a lot of people from here don't like him because of all that he's done. Lots of us were cheering for him when he started at FSU but when all of these things popped up he made us look bad and then told the media he was from another town and didn't ever mention Hueytown. Wish he had better character than what he's showed.

The crab leg story was blown way out of proportion. This stuff happens all the time. You're going to tell me you don't have a friend who works at a restaurant or retail store who hooks you up with a deal or gets you a free drink or something? I mean, just the other day I was in Chipotle 15 minutes before they closed and the dude at the register said this one's on them and gave me a free meal just because he recognized i was a regular customer.

These players are dealing with professional interrogators who know how to manipulate the way questions are asked to get something for a story, so it's necessary for these guys who are not trained in professional communication to be able to defend themselves and avoid being sidelined into a narrative that may be unfair or disproportionate to their character.

This is training for coach interviews in the draft but in a way it's the same thing as with the media. It can be worse. You say a dumb thing to a coach and they don't draft you. You say a dumb thing to the media and the world knows about it. Even the video itself runs the risk of us fans seeing something he never should have said in front of the camera.
Man in hindsight I'm soo glad he didn't say this when it happened.

Let me tell you what probably happened:
The employee in question was a fan of Jamis, and told him he’ll hook Jamis up. Jamis came in and talked to a couple of the workers and they let him take the crab legs. Somebody (probably another employee or/and customers) saw and didn’t think it was right. They told security and that’s how it began.
This is a big no no for employees. I work at a grocery store. And it doesn’t matter if I’m a fan or like somebody, I can’t just go and give a way free stuff. That’s illegal and against store policy.
Jamis was at fault because he “wanted a hookup”. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work like that.
