- Charlie Kaufman is one of American cinema’s singular voices, and with this weekend’s release of his new Netflix movie, ‘I’m Thinking of Ending Things,’ Ringer contributor Adam Nayman wanted to take a look at the writer-director. To narrow down a definition of Kaufman, an artist whose works frequently veer into the abstract and surreal, Adam has selected eight words that, when combined, might approximate a definition of “Kaufmanesque.”

Synechdoche, NY is my vote for most rewatchable movie of all time. Though I'd suggest only watching it twice per decade
I usually watch it every other year. Infinitely rewatchable.

Why isn't anyone talking about synechdoche? It's his greatest work. In my opinion.
nah i gotta go with Adaptation, the intertextual layering of text on to reality and reality on to text was just a thing of beauty to witness. And Adaptation actually has great comedic moments too unlike Synecdoche which is just existential blandness

@@alexandermetres6014it was both funny AND was so fucking sad that it brought me to tears, that’s whats so amazing about filmmakers like Charlie Kaufman. Being so talented that you can make a scene almost hilarious but make you cry like a man is something truly awe-inspiring.

You have to do more of these. This was incredible. Come up with a dictionary for the rest of the acclaimed screenwriters or even director's like Wes Anderson or The Coen Bros.

I really love how Kaufman tries to explore old themes from new perspectives for artistry sake, not just novelty. The premise form which he started writing 'Being John Malkovich' was "Man falls in love with woman who isn't his wife", but he turns it into a complete analysis about identity, fame, etc. Great video, thanx!!!!
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind is seriously underrated, incredible Sam Rockwell performance.
Adaptation is one of the best films ever and so is Eternal Sunshine, both absolutely stunning works of writing and directing creativit(y)
I know Rockwell won an academy award not too long ago, but I still think he's underrated.
@@MickySarge i was 14 when Moon came out and i think it was the first film i'd seen that was carried by one actor. ever since then i've been a huge fan of his.
I'm Thinking Of Ending Things is my 2nd favorite all-time movie in 46 years.

Great video essay. Though kind of obvious that he needed to tape over his pronunciation of "Synechdote NY" each time. You can tell because it's much quieter than the rest of the narration. lol

On the contrary, I think the theme of puppetry is very present in “I’m thinking of ending things”. It feels as though Jesse Plemon’s character is controlling his parents’ thoughts, and that of his girlfriend’s. The possibility of “mind-control” and “puppetry” seems rampant throughout the dinner scene.
the whole thing is inside the janitors head, he's making it up. Plemmon's character is a younger version of him and he's making up scenarios because he regrets not asking Buckley's character for her number during the quiz thing. so the whole parents scene shows how much he was embarrased and ridiculed by them.
you should all check out holy moters and the science of sleep. both movies have similar feels to charlie kaufmans work

I love Charlie Kaufman but honestly thought this was going to be an analysis of meta-comedy involving elvis impressions and wrestling women.
Good old Andy, another excentric kaufman, but that one is much less cerebral that's for sure.
This was a great watch however I don't agree with many of Nayman's conclusions. But I'll take any essay on great filmmakers.

As a work of nonfiction, THE ORCHID THIEF is _not_ a novel. As a college professor, I have to put up with my students, year after year, mislabelling book-length works of non-fiction "novels." I always wonder where they get that usage from. Please don't encourage them.
