Thank you for this tutorial. I, too, have this butane stove but have never used it, either. I found a case of butane canisters at a good price at a Costco Business store. They also had the portable stove there as well. I have rain ponchos, tarps, matches, lighting (solar garden lights from the dollar store, for example), oil lamps, flashlights, batteries, extra can openers, metal camping dishes, tents, seeds, water and water filters, instructional books, crank flashlight/phone charging combos, work and garden gloves, etc. So glad you are sharing these wonderful, practical, inspired videos, Sandy!
Your list is so helpful! You have thought about a lot of possibilities and what you may need. I am sure because of what you have done, you also have peace of mind.
Careful the metal plates they can get Hot. I use mine to hold the paper plates and the paper insulates well enough to keep the metal easily handled.
Great video. I have a propane stove that must be 35 years old now. I bought it for camping, way back when I was a much younger man, and I've used it many, many times when camping. No reason why it wouldn't serve equally well at home in a no-power emergency. You can also buy one-pound propane tanks at Walmart that last me through several camping weekends. Can't say how the price compares with butane, as the stove in your video is the first butane-fueled stove I've ever seen. My propane stove isn't as portable as yours, but it does offer two burners, which is nice, as you can have your coffee perking away while cooking your breakfast. I like your underlying point -- that preps can very often be sourced from where camping equipment and supplies are sold, since emergencies present you with many of the same problems that camping does. Yep, your old camping stove will serve the same purpose. Use what you have is my motto. My mom and dad have one of those old stoves you’re taking about that we always took camping.
I have e Gas One stove and canisters, but have not needed to use it as recent hurricanes (Ian) did not cut our power where I am in Palm Beach County. glad to see your tutorial!
I did use (hurricane Irma, 2017) an Aqua Pod kit which is a bathtub water storage plastic bag/bladder. It fits in a tub with a slide-on connection to the faucet. Up to about 45 gallons (small tub) of clean water from your tap. It comes with a simple hand pump to fill smaller containers you can use for drinking, cooking, shower. It states it can go up to 65 gallons in a larger tub. You can buy the bag by itself, if you already have a pump. We always buy 3 cases of bottled water too, but if a cat 3 or greater is coming…the tub bladder is a great option. We have 2 bathrooms so this is feasible for us, as we have the separate shower.

Hi Sandy. I bought my Gasone stove at Amazon as well as the butane canisters. Someone asked if they are safe for indoor cooking. Yes they are. I experienced hurricane Ian firsthand and my advice would be to purchase a camping shower with a USB rechargeable battery. Thanks for another great video and God bless.

If water is in short supply you might think of sponge bathing - also it helps to add some baking soda to the water used for a sponge bath - baking soda helps prevent rashes by neutralizing the skins acidity -
I lived through Hurricanes Laura and Delta. No power for a month. I used a Coleman camp stove and bought a small one like you are showing from Walmart. It was $19. More expensive now, but it works great. I use indoors.
When I looked back at when I bought the stove 3 years ago, it was under $20 then. For short term cooking, I wouldn't be worried about using it indoors either.
I recently bought a gas one dual fuel stove. This week we were hit by hurricane Francine and experienced a power outage for about two days. I have never used this stove and with the stress of the hurricane I had a lot of difficulty connecting the propane canister to the stove and the instructions were not clear (like a lot of Chinese products I buy, the instructions are not clear). When I calmed down an began to think clearly I figured out how to connect the propane canister to the stove. What did I learn? Use and practice with your preps and become familiar when them BEFORE YOU NEED THEM!

Butane is usually cheaper at an Asian store.
I bought that Coleman butane stove after watching your video a few years ago and I’m so glad I did. I did recently buy a 4-pack of the butane cans from Sam’s Club for $8.28. The power went out so many times in my area last summer and now I don’t have to worry about making meals.

I got my stove and canisters from an Asian food market. Asians use those stoves a lot for everyday cooking. I liked mine a lot. Got lost in a move. Time to get another one. 4:29

Having been through so many disasters in our lifetime, we have various back up methods to cook. If you live in a sunny location don't forget solar cooking. Our power company shuts off the power when we have high temps or high winds quite often , which can be for several days up to weeks. We have a generator plus different types of wood / gas stoves, but we usually cook with the sun during those types of power outages, plus we will use thermal cooking methods ..such as a Stanley thermal cooker to save fuel.

I bought the Coleman and got the attachment to hook up to BBQ LP...just got an EcoFlow Delta 2 with Solar Panels...I have 2 gas generators but figure better off with Solar Generator...hang tough stay safe God Bless
There is a good chance you might still need your gas generator - I live in the deep South in a rural area -
I know some that still don't have power lines running to there homes - they just use led lights off battery's charged by solar panels -
From February till July 2022 the sky was over cast every day -
If they had a generator they could have charged there battery for there lights -
In the end they had to use candles during that time of no sun -

I bought butane canisters off Amazon in packs of 28. Each canister gives you about 3.5 hours of use - somewhat less if you have it going full blast. I have several packs of 28 sitting here so I'm good for a while. There are a lot of makes of those camping stoves. They are pretty much all alike.
Ty for the refresh. I bought one a few years back i must see about mine and refresh my knowledge on how to use it.
The coffee pot is called a percolator. Very easy to use. It’s my go to pot for camping. Hotter than drip coffee.
A percolator was just about all we had in the 60s.
I bought a couple of these, and the propane adapter that allows me to connect to a large propane tank
Now, that is a smart idea.
I have one in my prep, with a couple doz bottles of fuel. I also bought a portable indoor heater with a few doz bottles of propane or can be hooked up to a 20 lbs tank... ❤❤❤
Both can also be used for camping 🏕 😅 😄

If your interested in saving fuel you might look into pressure cookers - they save an enormous amount of fuel when used properly -
Down here in the deep south there were free beaches were the gulf of Mexico meets the marsh land -
When my sons were 4 & 5 i home schooled them for a while -
I would set up my tent on those free beaches and never leave my camp site for several months or till a tropical storm was going to hit -
I did cook things like fish on a open fire, we cought fish daily - i also cooked a lot of beans and brown rice in a pressure cooker while staying on those beaches for months -
I packed two aluminum refillable 5 pound propane tanks on all my long term camping ventures -
I used a pressure cooker and a propane camping colman stove - those small propane tanks held one gallon -
with a pressure cooker i could cook a lot of meals in several months on a little bit of fuel -
I had ordered books written by people who had sailed the open waters - they had sailed on the open waters for months at times so they understood what it was to conserve fuel till they arrived at the next port -
Every yr down here there tropical storms or huicanes -
Instantly butain and propane is sold out -
It can help to read cook books writen by those that have lived on the open water were there supplies is limited for a time -

The green coleman propane 1 lb tanks can be refilled from the 20lb grill tanks! They just have to have the little air release valve! Edit- and you need an adapter to connect the two. There are videos on YT showing how!

@@nancyhartlage8626 the butain has an indefinite storage life - if you find any corrosion on your cans or live in humid area you should wipe cans in storage with baseline to help parent corrosion -
I'm on my second butane stove. I use it to make my weekly Hot Pot. yum.
They work great!
Sawyer and Grayl are two of the more popular water filters other than the life straw. From what I understand the life straw will get difficult to use (you have to suck the water threw it) but works in a pinch. The Sawyer has many different types of filters to choose from. If you get the Grayl (some of these will remove pesticides and other harmful chemicals/ farm ponds or water near farms "hikers") I would recommend the larger one because it's easier to press down. Most of those are for personal filtration (backpack kind of thing) not filtering gallons except the Sawyer has some larger containers and they last longer. By the way Pathfinder Dave Canterbury's store has much of this stuff on his website and the have muti-fuel stoves as well as a lot of other camping/survival gear.

I a going to buy this gas stove! I just hope that we have the electricity to keep the refrigerator running! I’m ordering powdered eggs, buying canned soups, dehydrated broccoli, stuff that doesn’t need refrigeration.

I've always used propane camp stoves. On a shopping trip to Walmart a couple of years ago I happened to see an end counter advertising an $8 butane camp stove sale! Even though I had never used them, I instantly grabbed one, figuring it would be a good addition to my preps. Being familiar with camping gear, I knew the price was a steal! Now the price of propane has gone up so much, I think I should switch to the butane stove anyway!
*Side note regarding alcohol stoves:
Be EXTRA careful with them. The flame can be almost invisible!

All good stuff for sure. Just a suggestion.. if possible, get the cooking and food items paying cash. Go to the bank..get cash..then go shopping. This way there is not a trail for officials to track your location etc.. FYI
There are some that are uncomfortable using gas appliances - there are also alcohol portable stoves or sterno stoves -
Many that live on sail boats don't care for gas appliances and use alcohol stoves -

Great idea!...unfortunately, I live in an apartment complex for seniors that prohibits storing fuels of any type in our apartments.
Wow that’s quite an inconvenience and surprising with solid fuel options like stereos that are stored in cans. Nothing like pressurized gas or liquid fuel.
You can get an alcohol stove and a couple bottles of 90% rubbing alcohol and you’ll be good to go. They can’t categorize rubbing alcohol as a fuel…because it has everyday uses. The little stoves fit in the palm of your hand…so toss it in the cabinet behind the washcloths!😊

It was a while ago but I got canisters of butane from an Asian grocery store. I can't remember how much they were but I do remember how shocked I was at the lower price compared to Walmart.
The butane stoves and canisters are available at many restaurant supply stores.

Fyi those butane stoves don't work well in really cold weather. We've used them up in northern maine. Coleman propane stoves always work no matter what the temperature is. Something to think about.
The Butane used to be cheap at Sams Club @ 4 cans for under $9 but now my Local Sams & even their website no longer have them at all.

Sorry if this has already been answered..but where is the best place to store the cans of butane? I would like to get some extra, but not sure where to store. We have a basement that stays cool and an outbuilding that gets quite warm..but not to terribly hot like some garages I`ve seen.
I would put them in your basement since you have one. I keep ours in the garage. It is insulated, so it doesn't get super hot. But I actually dont think the heat hurts it because Asican countries where it gets really hot use the butane tanks all the time.

Would you use a butane stove indoors? I have read you should have a digital carbon monoxide monitor and fire extinguisher on hand. Also is ut safe to store the butane canisters indoors? I also read they should be the ones with CRV.on the label.

You can use indoors if you have to but be by a window that is open (does not have to be fully) for ventilation.

The Induction Cook Tops or Single Induction stoves are clean and convenient BUT they require a portable power supply with a comparable surge wattage or higher to plug them into the 120 outlet on the power supply. They are very power hungry for use in an emergency situation unless you have plenty of solar-power for them. Also, not all pots/cookware works on them. They require certain specific cookware material components to work properly with them. Nice for Picnicking, short camping trips but not the wisest for emergency uses.

Your better off if you don't use induction or microwave for cooking the military found that. when food was cooked or heated in those devices troops experienced problems with malnutrition - it destroys the polyphenols in the food or nutrient value of food -
@@able880 this is only if the electricity goes out . Maybe to heat soup or make a cup of instant coffee. This area is #5 on Russia's list to destroy be cause of the amount of military in the area. Such as worlds largest naval base,we make nuclear aircraft carries,subs,etc. Would like a cup of coffee or tea. Not going to cook meals. Thanks

They will get lightweight and you will feel that there is nothing left in them. Just like you would a can of spray paint.

I recommend getting food in your pantry that will store longer term, that way there will be food to eat. We can all prepare by getting food in our homes.
You should already have some food put back, you can’t depend on others to totally look after you!
The best place I have purchased the butane bottles is at the oriental store. Last month they were $1.50 each in five packs.

Butain burns hotter than natural gas and propane - asians often want a real hot flame to stir fry and a butane stove is ideal for that type of cooking -

Yes butane stoves are the best, I have two. One is a just in case spare new one. Get my fuel at Sam's club. Also you need to check out THERMAL COOKERS such as the Shuttle Chef. You can make a huge pot of food and just use maybe 10-15 minutes of fuel with these. Thermal cooking saves time, money and fuel.

Bring to a boil. Boil ten more minutes and stays hot for hours like a crockpot. But it also is an art that needs practice.

why not buy a coleman stove that uses propane that way you can get a big tank of it instead of paying for all those cans of butane. we used the coleman stove when a hurricane hit in the gulf but a few years back made it all the way up to Ohio. the winds did anyway....we had power outages everywhere for a week off and on all over. thank you!

Hi Sandy, I actually bought one of these stoves about five years ago and I have it buried in my shed in the backyard. This is such a good idea to get it out and go over how it works! I need to put it in a place that I know where to find it. I also need to order some more butane thank you so much for this important reminder because if I needed it, it would probably take me a whole day to find it! By the way, you look so fit and trim!

I bought a couple of the Butane stoves. I bought both from Amazon, one is Japanese made and the other is Colemen I think. I got some of my butane from a cash and carry store up the street from me. The others were bought from Amazon. BTW I also bought a Butane Heater which could also be used to cook food.
A Butane heater is a great idea!
I found mine on Amazon … very simple & good price. It really is a sense of security to have one or two should the power go out.

This not about the stove. The candle you made. Does the solid crisco ever catch on fire?
I have had no issues. It's a single flame candle that does not heat the whole jar of crisco. I am sure if the heat was extreme, the crisp could catch on fire but, the candle will not heat it up enough to do that. People use crisco to fry with and that is very high heat.
The crisco has to be absorbed into the wick to burn - it will not burn on less the entire jar is heated to past 500° or so that's the flash point -
A candle flame will never hear a jar to that high of a temperature - only the wick of a candle reaches 500° F at the wick when it's 500° the crisco is hot enough to burn -
Those crisco candles are extreamly safe - I would think if it's extreamly cold there could be problems keeping the flame burning -

Great stoves, I camp & travel a lot. I bought mine at Walmart, You mentioned buying butane fuel at both: Walmart & from Amazon.
Ordering a case of 24 butane cans off Amazon is much cheaper than buying them at Walmart, you save money buying the butane off Amazon.

I ordered my butane cannisters off of Amazon at the same time I bought my stove which is a different brand. I bought 8 cannisters.
Thank you for sharing. I ordered mine off Amazon too. Amazon makes it so easy since they drop it off right to our front porch.
Remember, butane ignites poorly in cold weather, so just tuck it inside your coat and warm it in cold weather. Once it is burning, it will warm the canister to keep the gas flowing, no trouble. ALSO. KOVEA makes a butane/propane mix fuel canister. Since the propane ignites better in cold weather, I keep a few just to get things going during that initial stressful, power down period. I get mine at Bi Mart .

Our backup cooking option is an old Coleman dual fuel camp stove. It uses either white gas or unleaded gasoline. A little more involved to operate but its a two burner stove. The fuel available prob!em is solved.

I have found Butane in Asian Markets in my area, South Mississippi. Very inexpensive! Note...Butane does not work in extremely freezing weather. I would also get a solar power bank with solar panels and some propane that you could use sparingly if the electricity is out for a long time. We never know what might happen. It is good "to try" to be prepared based on what one has learned about what to do, in case of an emergency. I really need to do more research on this topic. Thank you for sharing!
You are right about the "it's good to try to be prepared". Nobody knows what the future holds, but we can at least put in the effort to try to get things in our homes, the best we can. No matter what, it will be cheaper to buy now than it will be in the future.

I live in the deep South in 2022 from February to July every day it rained or it was over cast - it's been that way every day this week -
I know some that. live deep in the wood far off the main roads that don't have power lines to there house -
They use solar for led lights - but if the sun doesn't shine all week there back to candles -
Solar works very well in the south west - in some areas it works well enough - but in high humidity areas it doesn't work well at all -
Solar is better if you can afford it
