  • The Military Aviation of the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (Militaire Luchtvaart van het Koninklijk Nederlands-Indisch Leger, ML-KNIL) was the name used by the air arm of the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) from 1939 until 1950. It was an entirely separate organization from the Dutch Air Force.
The unit was founded in 1915 as the "Test Flight Service" (Proefvliegafdeling-KNIL, PVA-KNIL). In 1921 it became the "Aviation Service" (Luchtvaartafdeling-KNIL, LA-KNIL), before finally receiving the designation of ML-KNIL on 30 March 1939. In 1950, following Dutch recognition of Indonesian independence, its bases and facilities were handed over to the Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU).

The good, the bad and the ugly. Fascinating ultra-rare footage mixed with amateurish flightsim captures and sometimes quite inaccurate labeling of aircraft types.
Thanks for sharing all the same, the amazing historic footage makes it more than worth it!

After the Japanese occupation many of the Royal Netherlands air force squadron was trained at Maxwell Army Airforce base in Alabama before retunring to the pacific to fight. My mom worked at the PX there. She is 97 and remembers the dutch pilots or as the were called then "Javanese" quite well.

just a little surprised to discover my own Mitchell FSX movie in your compilation! This music fits better, but sounds familiar, like something from a BBC nature movie.

Beautiful footage you made, the music is from The Cinematic Orchestra - The Crimson Wing - Mystery Of The Flamingos, it's just been used in the end of the movie "The Theory of Everything".

The pby/do-24 situation has been mentioned before, other than that, the ml-knil also operated P-51 Mustangs and Spitfires from 322 squadron after ww2

Ben benieuwd waar de opnames vandaan komen van de Mitchell vanaf tijdstip 28:06 tm 28:24, beginnend bij de close-up van de Mitchell.

Is it me or were most of the good military aircraft all in East-Indonesia at the time?
Ligt het aan mij of waren de meeste goede vliegtuigen in Oost-indie gestationeerd?

Depends how you look at it; if you mean the flying boats, you are dead right. The Dorniers were ordered just in time to replace the obsolete Fokker hydroplanes. From 1940 on the German manufacturers weren’t able to fulfil Dutch orders anymore, so attention was focussed on American suppliers. This, for instance, yielded the Catalina.
The fighters on the other hand were not really very much better than what was available at home. They were OK, not rubbish, but certainly not great. Against the Japanese fighters they didn’t stand a chance. On the plus side, their all-metal construction made them better suited to the hot and humid conditions in the East-Indies than the mixed construction of the Fokkers used at home.
Last but not least, while the Netherlands were being invaded in 1940, the East-Indies managed to stay out of trouble for about two years, which means they were able to procure more and more modern aircraft.

Het driemotorige toestel wat in deze documentaire wordt omschreven als Consolidated PBY Catalina is een Dornier DO24 Wal. De PBY-Catalina was 2-motorig.
