    6:53, the problem with that is you can tweet him questions all you want, but then he can just choose to ignore those questions. Not saying he can't do that at press briefings, but something about having to say no to a question publicly holds more merit than hiding behind a screen.

    • @AhranMaoDante
      @AhranMaoDante 5 лет назад +6

      How is that any different than asking him questions at a press meeting and him just ignoring them? Press meets were only ever set up as a way for the president to relay information through the press to people, via newspapers, then radio, then TV. With the ability to relay information to people through the internet, and an always increasing number of people who either have access to the internet or actively spend time looking for information on the internet, the only 2 reasons to continue having press meets are 1) Tradition. and 2) So that the press and their associated news outlets can get juicy sound bites/footage to twist the context of or use directly, for the purpose of getting more views.

      I totally agree. Like you said you can hide behind a screen and that means you also can’t see the expression the other person makes or how the say something and how they act when saying it. Those tells can help you decide if that person is lying, not speaking the entire truth, or that it makes them uncomfortable to speak about it and other possibilities.

      @@AhranMaoDante because its easier to ignore and silence those you don't agree with rather than make a public display of your stupidity. Trump is indefensible which is why his press secretaries have basically given up. There has NEVER been such hostility and violence projected onto a President, even Nixon didn't have the harassment that this President has. If it's true that she doesn't want to give briefings because it simply gets too heated, I think that's a garbage excuse and she should be replaced for a Press Secretary that can take the heat. Politics will always be heated regardless of intent. The more open discussion to the public there is, the more checks and balances there are in the system. It's always better to talk more.

    I don't see the press briefings as an opportunity for openness and transparency, it's about accountability. The press briefings afford the opportunity for the White House and the President to be held accountable for their decisions and answer tough questions. They allow the people to have an on-record official response from the Administration regarding their policies, actions and positions. And I feel that's what they are trying to move away from. I think the media do get confrontational with Sarah Sanders, but that is down to them trying to get a straight and definitive answer out of her/ the administration, and many of the briefings became about deflecting, back-tracking and non-comital answers.

He wont follow up that tweet with a moral stance on the same topic at a rally in a month. The Danes A trait of an authoritarian government is calling independent news sources all ‘propaganda’ and ‘fake news’. He lies constantly about trivial things, it’s pathetic. Over half of his tweets have been proven to be fabricated or pure falsehoods. I voted for him and that was a huge mistake. Do you want a president who lies? Disgusting and immoral, no. Before he was president he said he supported abortion and now all of a sudden he is pro-life just to please Christian voters. He doesn’t want his SAT scores or college grades released, this implies he received poor marks and is unintelligent. So who are we more inclined to believe multiple news organizations that have decades of honorable and trusted coverage or someone whose educational background is questionable, with a spotty reputation and lies on a regular basis? Studies have shown that fake news primarily comes from Facebook, who is on Facebook? Old people, old people are more likely to spread fake news. Though it can be edited and with deep fakes a thing, hearing him physically say something, he has a harder time backing out of it. I am sure there are reporters out there just trying g to get a rise and a good sound bite, but that's not everyone. I think it may be more because the staff doesn't want trump in front of cameras answering non scripted questions. Every time it has happened they've had to clean up his messes or hes come off as a colossal asshole. The one from several months ago is a great example, because, he was either telling them to shut up, that he didn't like them or because they were being rude by asking him a question (One that was no rude, but instead was an important one he didnt want to answer). That's not a president. That's a spoiled businessman in a role he shouldn't be in, so its understandable why there are fewer press meetings. There are far less messes, misspoken words and fewer lies down the road when he claims he never said something and its fake news... even when its a live recording.

    overall, I think this is a lack of transparency, I believe that in the past, press briefings have provided a way to directly question the press secretary, which often reveals conflicting statements and inaccuracy (which can be negative as well). But answering through twitter slows this exchange and allows people to make more rehearsed, vetted and obscure answers to some of the important questions (even though it can happen in a live press briefing but you can read a lot more into a person). Plus you are removing tonality and expressions the president might use when expressing some of these statements. It can also be someone else making these statements as well instead of the president. (which i know he might just as easily read them from a prompter, during a physical statement) I just think that just like in all other social by-products that have been affected by social media like people who have anxiety and issues with public engagement and speaking due to the disconnection with physically speaking with people, that this could also lead to a similar avenue.
    I also am the kind of person who prefers to look a person in the eye when I am speaking to them, watching their body language and being able to judge their tone and words as they say them. Otherwise I feel like I am just getting a more robotic release of information that is dripped through this social pipeline.

    Press briefing are vital for the accountability and questioning inherent to them. If it was only about announcements and the words the president wants to say - no more no less - then sure, Twitter is fine. But that is pure bias and half of anything. He doesn't have to answer questions or give reasons. He can even ignore any and all opinions or comments that he wants to. THAT is the point of press briefings and why they are vital.

    • @cornbreadisbetterthanpizza6866
      @cornbreadisbetterthanpizza6866 5 лет назад

      I agree that it does force the White House to answer questions from more perspectives, but let's face it, large media organizations have a certain thinking that isn't a representation of all Americans. But like I said, I agree. Twitter is not a replacement because it is filled with fan or hate mail. The president isn't answering questions that are well constructed from professional journalists. The problem I have is that the organizations have become political, which has caused the professional journalists to ask media esc questions.
      I don't know what would be the answer, but getting rid of Press Briefings without an alternative like the Trump administration has seems to only mean less accountability from the president. I suppose if voters work harder to become informed it might re-balance things though.

    • @sneakydeekie5472
      @sneakydeekie5472 5 лет назад

      Cornbread IsBetterThanPizza I agree completely that they aren’t the best because of media bias. There is far far too much bias in the organisations that go to them. The trump administration is certainly doing their best in feeding that bias by trying to ban the biased media that is biased against them and, when that doesn’t work, backing towards a medium that removes all but their own select points of view that they agree with.
      There isn’t an alternative that anyone can seem to find yet, but until it is found I think that everyone can agree that the press briefings must continue.

  • @carpediem5232

    The difference between press briefings and twitter is that journalists can ask for clarifications and questions during a briefing. And he can reach his followers directly without any kind of fact check, which then makes it easier to dismiss later fact checks.

Only a one-way Twitter post isn't the dialogue we need. Sure you get information, but what else? Questions aren't answered right away if at all, and we're left wondering until either another post comes out or they may even provide the answer privately which is worse as then it leaves the legitimacy questionable.
