The Best & Worst 2016 Campaign Logos

- Graphic designer Sagi Haviv says an effective logo is "appropriate, simple and memorable," and critiques those by 2016 presidential hopefuls Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, Ben Carson, Mike Huckabee, Carly Fiorina, Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton.
Yes because a red arrow pointing to the right is obviously the best choice for a democratic nominee...
Sean Carlin Hospital sign
Sean Carlin If Obama were to run as her VP, would their campaign sign be "HO" ?
+Sean Carlin right?
+Terrence Nowicki I think if Marco Rubio didn't have the awkward whole country dot, his would have been the best one. It was almost perfectly simple and modern.
+Sean Carlin the reason i clicked on this video was to see if he would say anything about the arrow being to the right, but nope....
laughed out loud at the horror writ upon his face when he sees ben carson's logo
Trump wasn't even running yet, lol.
I was wondering where his symbol was
*911:* Hello, what's your emergency?
*+Rob Rob:* I'm calling to report on a third degree burn...
Its a letter T humping on a letter P's butthole
mtksbctk That's a joke logo, not official
Rob Rob I didn't even notice.
Rand’s looked like an oil and gas company’s logo
Perhaps that of the Standard Oil?
Lol, that's as libertarian as it gets...Gilded age 2.0, bucko
Yes, it was quite awful. This guy lost all credibility right there.
or olympics game
Q
"What they did to this letter is criminal"..LOL
Rand definitely had the slickest logo.
Which goes to show logos don't play that big of a part.
And was the best candidate 😭
@@michaeld8280 lol.. no... Trump logo and the red hat branding killed everything else......
Make America Great Again is a slogan not a logo, The MAGA hats were huge yes but not a logo.
I kind of liked Carly's logo
He forgot to point out that Hillary's logo points to the right.
And? Left to right is generally regarded as forward.
@@Studio2770 ur right MAGA
Epi we're talking about general directions, not political leanings. Pull your head out of Trump arse.
@@Studio2770 Oh the irony
@@Studio2770 wow that has so many interpretations
Im really disappointed they didnt discuss "JEB!". i love "jeb!" its so excitable. like a kid the day after halloween all sugared up and bouncing off the walls. JEB!
Jeb is a mess
Jeb! was the best
You could say you like the cut of his JEB!!!!
I think Rand's looks like the log of a tech company form the early 90s.
Reminds me of the old slanted Microsoft logo.
Ted Cruz should've had zodiac signs on his logo
I never realised there was an arrow in the FedEx logo!!
hahaha omg
A little slow, aren't ya?
Look at the Baskin Robbins logo and see what you can find in it. It was fun for me to see.
If you ever took any graphic design classes they will make sure you will never forget it lol
"Not fous on her personality." I guess Hillary forgot about that.
I think having the H instead of her name was a huge mistake tbh, like, it dehumanized her.
Ed Moritz she was never human
lmao^
She dehumanizes herself
It meant the person right to me is a ho
lol Hillary's looks like a hospital logo
Hospital meets investment bank. 😆
The Clinton logo looks stodgy and dated. It reminds me of NBC's "N" logo from the 1970's.
matt k. And that was their worst logo. They smartly went back to the peacock logo. I think that 60s brutalist ugly style fits the Democrats to a T. They walk around acting like its 1964 in 2018. Appropriate they would pick the style from the era.
What do u mean cruz's "far right" audience?
Idk maybe cause he appeals to the far right? Along with the moderate right and others on the spectrum. (But when it comes to winning primaries you want to appeal those who actually vote, be it the far left or far right)
He's not "far right" he's just an idiot...
All of his supporters are fascists and christian fundamentalist so...
@@yazhajohnson254 "Fascists". Yeah, no.
I wish they were fascists :(
"Hospital This Way"
I was just about to say what about Trump! Then I realised he wasn’t even running yet! They should of touched on Bush! With the use of !
Carly's isnt bad but looks like it should be on a handbag label or something. it doesnt say president of the US it says walk walk fashion baby, maybe im just associating the red star and the modern sans serif font with the macy's logo but thats what it reminds me of. it makes me want to go shopping.
Rand's is super cool. but it looks kinda like a bank logo. i dont know. i like the campaign logos to say "president", not "corporation". a navy blue color on his name with the red torch would make it perfect.
Hillary's logo just looks like "Hospital, over there". Whoever thought this was a good idea should definitely NOT work in graphic design.
Maître Renard exactly my thought as well.
It looks like a Carrefour logo with an 'H' :p
Only Michael Bierut one of THE Greatest Logo designers of all time
You act like an expert, despite being completely uninformed.
you know Michael Bierut designed that right?
Wow you're an idiot. I can see how some read it definitely but I definitely read it as it was intended to be read. Plus it was done by Michael Bierut, a legend in design and Massimo Vignelli's apprentice.
Hillary Clintons logo looks like an airplane hitting the Twin Towers.
I'm not sure why people are so quick to assume his liking of Clinton's logo is a sign of his political bias.
To start off with a simple comparison to some of the examples given here, it's definitely one of the better ones hands down. Might not be the world's best logo in general, but that's not what we're voting for here. It's simple, bold and gets right to the point to say the least. It definitely doesn't hurt that it's easy to remember too. Anyone who's seen it once will always have it in their head, regardless of who they'll be supporting.
It shows stability but promotes its dynamic side at the same time. Not my favorite combination of colors but it speaks for itself. Mixed with the boldness of the type, it shows her strong willpower. Maybe not the most aesthetically pleasing but, I'd say it does one hell of a job as a logo.
That's a really valid point. Of all the items presented, I agree that Clinton's logo looks most like a logo. But it also looks like a Hospital sign, which is where her political career (thankfully) is to be found.
I'm sure it was highly refined by the focus groups
shyadeny her logo is a big red arrow pointing right, it’s a stupid logo for someone who’s base is supposed to be on the blue left
+Jay Noureddin But we typically think of things from left to right, if she had her arrow pointing left it would be pointing backward, the opposite of what she wants her logo to convey.
shyadeny it’s an H
I can't be the only one who thought that Bernie's logo looks a bit like toothpaste one the bottom.
I honestly like Cruz' one. It's certainly original, and looks nice. I think the "stunted star" as he called it gives you the idea it continues around, as if it was a 3-dimensional object. I like it.
Rand and Hillary had the best logos, without a doubt. Hillary Clinton’s logo, especially, is great because it’s simple yet bold at the same time. It’s very memorable and easy to identify whereas Carson’s or Rubio’s logos are very forgettable and not even unique. I’ll remember Hillary’s logo for a long time. I’ll forget everyone else here, tbh.
Thank you for that. Always like to hear input from Chermayeff, Geismar and Haviv.
the background music completely killed this video -
Wish he had discussed Jeb. Though it simple, adding an exclamation point does not always creat excitement. Example: broccoli!
Suddenly I find myself really excited to eat broccoli!
Sees "broccoli!": (eating broccolies intensifies)
Such an underestimated comment 😂
All these conservatives yelling "bias!!!". You know he still complimented some of the republican logos as well, right? If you have more than enough candidates then you'll inevitably run into more shitty logos
Ted Cruz was "far right" lol, definitely
You forgot to say "Orange Man Bad!" Do not ever go against your programming again!!!
@@joshntn37111 underrated comment
@@joshntn37111
Palpatine: ironic
Even though I like H (for Hillary) as a mark, another disadvantage could be a poor application for black n white option. Would it be correct to use logo done just in stroke for black n white option?
Never enough of learning from Sagi Haviv 😊
Loved the H. Totally agree with this man's analysis. Not everyone was crazy about that logo, but I thought it was brilliant. Clean and recognizable and it was fun to see the ways it could be modified creatively, like the old MTV logo.
I hope there will be another one of these videos for candidates in 2019+
The Hilary logo was used by a UK grocery store.
The problem with Hilary's logo is the colour scheme. Red and blue don't complement each other like that... Not so boldly.
literally, all of them were red and blue. This is a logo system designed by Michael Bierut, one of the greatest designers of all time. I hate to pull rank on people, especially when it's not my own, but this logo is literally the best campaign logo out of all the ones we saw.
@@felixmcphie Just because it's made by someone great doesn't mean the logo it self is great. I honestly find her logo disgusting, I liked her first logo way more. And I feel that the OP meant the way the red and blue just full on clash while others separate them in at least some way.
Those colors, along with white, are on the American flag. It makes sense to use them.
@@abdisaniini I really wish to see the quality of your logos. The H logo is great, powerful.
@@markomartincek1539 Well I wouldn't go so far as to call it great, but I did go overboard with my last comment, even though I still do think that it could've been improved.
Trump's logo was the best. TRUMP in big letters and Make America Great Again....Easy to read and gets to the point.
Its basic tho.
the big boss was not in the game yet? there no trump. hahaha... Hillary logo said hospital on your right EMERGENCY.
Must give props to the subliminal honesty in Hillary's "hospital entrance" sign and America's future being DOA had she won.
The RAND one is nice it reminds me of some kinda auto parts brand lok
11 days later...
I'm a skeptic, so tt would have been ALOT more interesting if he knew NOTHING about the candidates other than looking a their individual logo. Agreed?
Lucus Kane On one hand, I agree because it would cause him to evaluate the logos simply on their visual merit, but think his thoughts on how the logos relate to the candidates were interesting.
Logos and products (in this case politicians) are inseparable. You can't make a proper logo without knowing about the product, neither can you analyze a logo without knowing about the product and target audience ect.
"A crippled star" LMFAOO
I always had an interest in logos.
Never considered this field before but it’s really interesting.
Shame that we did't have 'Jeb!' at this point. Would have gotten a funny reaction
Hillary's "arrow" points right for a reason. #FeelTheBern
How's that working out for you
Pointing at Trump !
@@carolingian5736 I laughed so hard at this comment. We never felt the bern🤣
@Frederick Röders Do you support Schultz? He's running as an independent. Bernie still has to face Kamala, cory, warren
Gee, this guy is not politically biased at all!
He's trying to justify blowing all that money going to college for this.
Jacob Cooper he makes more money than you trailer trash boys
be more constructive with ur criticism
Jacob Cooper you want to guess how much he makes? Guarantee you’d piss yourself
Robert Schrader your mistaking identitying a brand with bias
Hillarys logo is good, but its not representing her campaign. She should have had the symbol of women wearing completely black sunglasses.
This was fascinating. This guy really knows his stuff.
Little did they know
Literally thought that was a fish the first time I saw Marco Rubio’s logo
this guy is extremely attractive. side tracked
I like how he avoided saying if the H worked or not. Well it does look like directions to the hospital. Also points to the right... Rand and O for Obama are the best logos
Don't like Obama but I agree that it was one of the best looking logos. It was hopeful, great and humble at the same time.
It also looks like twin towers destroyed by a plane in the shape of arrow.
Who else came here for Sagi Haviv?
I would love to see his opinion on sports logos
Anyone else never noticed an arrow on the FedEx logo?
Am I the only one that does this to the graphic designing on people's school presentations?
I’m astonished he didn’t mention that Hillary’s 2016 logo looks like a road sign indicating a a hospital is nearby.
The Carson logo went away quickly. He had something different by the time he dropped out. The Carly one was nice. Marco Rubio looked like a feminine product.
please do one for 2020!
I never noticed the FedEx arrow
When I first saw Hillary logo on a wall I looked to the direction of the arrow expecting to find an hospital or hotel ....
Bernie Sanders and Hillary's logos were absolute garbage. Felt like this was kind of cherry picking a little bit and not giving an objective opinion which is what a designer is supposed to do. Designers always leaning left like it's part of their job description is why half of the world would rather use a software algorithm to come up with a design to avoid the headache.
If I was running mine would just be this
mathew
Except it’s in comic sans
Fast forward a year and realize that the winners logo wasn't even part of your critique.
Lol, when introducing the companies she gave the most low-key companies and then went to like National Geographic and NBC
For Rubios he didn’t mention there was no Alaska or Hawaii lol
Should have asked him to design his own perfect candidate logo for himself.
When he said Cruz was appealing to "far" right groups stead of just saying right showed where his bias is.
hillary's wasnt bad but once you point out the 9/11 imagery you cant unsee it. it also reminds me of fedex. im not a fan of fedex.
I think this guy wanted some serious vendetta
His eyes bugged out when he saw Carson's....lmao
I will never look at the fedex logo the same again
any one else think the gold and black background was cool with that eagle A.
I think the carson one was supposed to be Carson 'Merica, maybe not though.
Just goes to show that as a politician your logo doesn't mean dick.
Hillary's logo was designed by Michael Bierut, that's why Haviv had nothing against it :)
Hillary Clinton is represented by a big red arrow to the right. Yep... That logo represents exactly what anyone should expect from a corporatist Republican running for the Democratic Party's nomination.
PAUL '16
Whatta bout Jeb!
1:25 That flame looks like trumps hair =)
Bernie Sanders' friendly logotype reminds me of Barack Obama's 2008 graphic design.
No wonder Hillary lost, her logo is so bad, I didn't even realize it was meant to represent Hillary until he pointed it out...
The Clinton logo has an arrow pointing to the right like right and left wing, that makes no sense its saying go republican. The arrow is also red the republican color.
obamas logo...was maybe amongst the best...in 2008....still remember it....trump was smart enough to make it simple...at straightforward MAGA.....
The H didn’t work in the end!
imagine if we voted for representatives based on their policy and our best interests.
Well when you have a system where there's universal suffrage, elections become popularity contests. Now we could limit suffrage to the few that DO understand policy of politicians, assuming they're not lying of course, but I doubt you'd find many people in favor of that. As to "our best interests" that's extremely subjective.
Bernie Sanders and Rand Paul had the best logos. Hillary Clinton and Ben Carson had the worst logos
i just started watching this video, if this dude says that an H with an arrow pointing right is a genius idea and simple, yet complex and meaningful, ill kms
just finished the video, yup.. of course i was right
makes u wanna vote Haviv
all these logos are awful and amateurish. the best one is probably rand's, but the execution is lacking
Bernie's is great because it's meant to say that he's a candidate for the people. Both the use of just his first name and the way it's styled. Non-threatening, relaxed, down-to-earth.
I love the Rand logo but that font and the feel of the logo is old school, it's not modern.
That's why Bloomberg need to changes its logo.
Hillary’s looks like the twin towers falling
Rubio's logo is really clean. He's right about the shape of the U.S. though
4:20 The Hillary logo is a superliminal of the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers meant to call attention to (I'm with ) Her's foreign policy experience (destroying Libya). It is only a slight re-work of the 1964 Barry Goldwater campaign logo which Hillary supported when she was queen of her college's Young Republicans. The blending of red and blue elements is no accident -- it represents Her's Reagan Democrat-ness.
Didn't the arrow in the H get turned to blue later? Also I was wondering if it meant she's moving to the right, or if everything else is to the right of her, making her far left.
I actually really liked the first one, and didn't like the next ones 😂
Carly looks great if it was for a company or something, its fresh
Jeb?
