  • How to record multitple tracks (up to 4) at once using Audacity and the Behringer UMC404HD Audio Interface.
    NEED DRIVERS?
Check out the Behringer website at
    www.behringer....
With Audacity it's possible to do real budget recording at home since audacity is freeware. It has a few pitfalls:
    - you cannot select what input is connected to what track;
    - it sometimes crashes,...
    - limited mixing and editing
The Behringer UMC404HD is a very high quality audio interface at an amazing (budget) price point!
    Hardware used in this video:
    HP 250 G3 (Celeron, 4GB RAM, Windows 8.1).
The SATA disk that comes with it, pre-installed, has been upgraded to a Samsung SSD disk.

yo so i discovered that for Audacity to work with UMC404hD you need an old driver for the interface (3.29.0 version) install the driver and youll see the 4 channel shiett !

the audio output was too low on my UMC404HD until i downloaded Audacity. As soon as the download and installation finished my monitors volume shot up and almost deafened me lol the audio drivers that are built into Audacity amp up the UMC404HD output volume by at lest 20% I guess thats why you can download Audacity on the Behringer website under Mac drivers. I had the same problem when i plugged my UMC404HD into my windows laptop as well. Low volume but instead of downloading Audacity I downloaded the Host UMC404HD software and in the preferences for the software i was able to adjust a volume slider that also boost output volume by about 20%
So long story short: UMC404HD has a very low output until you download the necessary drivers and software for both Mac and Windows.

This no longer works with Audacity 2.3.0 and the rev 4.38 Behringer Windows drivers (as of Dec. 27, 2018). Like George Williamson, I don't see a device option in Audacity that enables four-track recording with the Behringer UMC404HD. The most I can get is two channels in and two channels out; the dropdown device menu does let me choose whether Audacity takes input from channels 1-2 or 3-4, but not all four at once.

Hi Rudy! I've been successfully and simultaneously recording in Audacity, using either of two usb MIXERS (one is a Behringer QX1202USB and the other a 6 channel Chinese SM-62U) with your single stereo track Panning method. In one track ie. left, a music track from you tube; in the opposite track ie. right an sm58 microphone it works great.
I have NOT succeeded with a Presonus AudioBox USB96, which I regret very much having purchased.
I am suspect of Audio Interfaces and suspect that all, including the UMC404HD will not provide me with the multi tracking recording functions INCLUDING the ability to the include the simultaneous recording of Internet You Tube streams with the karaoke and backup tracks. The issue of the drivers also is troublesome as I was not able to find V.3.29 at the Behringer site.
If you have some orientations I would welcome them.
Thank you for all your detailed and entertaining information. It has been very instructional and helpful
    With regards,
    Juan

I read your message on Facebook -- The 404 does record perfectly well on 4 different tracks, even with Audacity or other software. I don't know about PreSonus, don't know their hardware. With a mixer, it should work but with the 404 you already have a "mixer", since it has 4 indepent channels allowing 4 input/4 output. It has direct monitoring on the headphone out, so that shouldn't be an issue I'd say. But you could order one and return it if it doesn't work out as claimed.

    Greetings from Florida USA!
Rudy, yesterday I received my new Behringer U-PHORIA UMC404HD, bur regretfully, I was not able to achieve your multi-track (4 - channel) results with Audacity that you show in this video in my i5 second generation Windows 10 - 64 desk top computer.
I tried both drivers available at the Behringer website: 4.38 and 2.29.0 (they each installed properly), but neither provided the results you obtained. Actually, it appears to be communicating with Audacity or any other DAW (I also tried it with my Studio One 3.5) the same way that my Presonus AUDIOBOX USB 96 audio interface (communicates back and forth with the computer, via the usb cable, with 2 channels ONLY and NOT WITH FOUR).
After six hours of trying, and trying, I placed it back in its box and re-installed the chinese mixer, hoping, somehow that someone will offer a solution before returning it for a full refund.
    With thanks to all,
    Juan

This evening, I did some more research on it and found the Behringer drivers 3.29 and installed them.
Indeed, this allows me to open the four mono tracks on Audacity as you do, following your instructions on this video.
However, I am not able to record SIMULTANEOUSLY, like I successfully do using the mixers, both the live you tube stream (panning it to one side) and the stereo recording of the microphone, line in, (panning to the opposite side.
Of course, I do not understand why drivers 4.38 defeated that feature.
I may keep the UMC404HD after all.
      Thank you Rudy.
      Juan

Sorry to hear that! I know many have tried to install interfaces like this and most fail because they have the old drivers still active. You did change the settings in Audacity? You will need to set it to WASAPI in Audacity (see around 1:30 in the video). You should probably also deactivate (if active) or even remove an ASIO driver if it's there. It was interfering on my windows system with the Behringer driver!

Here's a video showing how I set up the drivers on Windows
      ruclips.net/video/6RTZd6l7fx8/видео.html
The Audacity part in that video isn't interesting, it didn't work in that video because I didn't set up Audacity correct. That's in the above one. But as far as the drivers are concerned: I'm almost certain that's you issue. If not, yes, return it.

Good morning Rudy and thank you.
Audacity works well like you show in the above video using drivers 3.29.0, which are the only drivers now installed.
The reason why it CANNOT NOT do the simultaneous recordings of the you tuibe live stream plus the microphone audio is:
      1. With Audacity open and with four mono channels ready to record, in order to see the signal of the live stream you must set up the recording path as follows: WASAPI - Recording Device: (Speakers Behringer UMC404HD 192K) (loopback) -2 (stereo ) recording channels - Speakers Behringer UMC404HD.
Note: If you change Recording Device to: Line Behringer UMC404HD 192K, THE LIVE YOU TUBE STREAM BECOMES UNAVAILABLE while the live microphones or instruments become available.
Rudy, please try it. You may arrive at the same conclusion that I am arriving at.
I hope that the sotfware development engineers at Audacity and at Behringer read these exchanges...
This morning I am still more inclined of keeping the 404HD for the live multitrack live recoring voice/instrument features and excellent sound....
Of course, again I may be overlooking something.
      Again thanks Rudy and blessings,
      Juan
