5 years later, still a super useful video. I’ve just started using Amplitube 5 and Tonex but realized all of the tones were nearly identical, or had a hint of clean/unprocessed bass. Your video helped me realize thst my settings were wrong for listening to only processed/modeled output. Thanks!
Thanks a bunch- I have this interface for a while now and have seen quite some video's/reviews on the UMC404HD, but you might be the first person to explain the routing in a straightforward and clear way! You've earned this subscribe, man.
hi i want to connect my yamaha psr or700 to the behringer to record music. to which port I need to connect front or back? and which port from the keyboard? Please advise.
@@germanyproductreviews4136 Connect them to the front inputs. On the keyboard there should be a set of stereo main outputs. I would use them and connect to the 1/2 or 3/4 of the interface.
Thank you so much! I'm using my UMC-404HD with Jamulus software to rehearse live with our 4-piece band , and I've been trying for weeks to figure out how to monitor the USB coming from Jamulus rather than my local sound. (Monitoring the USB stream coming back from Jamulus rather than your local audio helps overcome some of the latency and allows you to better stay in sync with the rest of the group.) Your explanation of the Main vs Playback output, and the Monitor function as it relates to what's heard in the headphones, is perfect! And may I say that the Behringer manual for the 404 does not remotely provide a clear explanation of how the Main and Playback outputs function, nor how the Monitor knob affects what you're listening to with regards to the local vs USB audio in your earphones. It's actually not that complicated, but their manual just doesn't give you enough detail to understand it! Well done!
Thank you for this tutorial! It was confusing at first using Ableton Live but I was able to route the metronome and monitor,(audio in my right ear and click in my left ear) through output 1 for headphone jack A, and then stereo out to my camera interface or PA system (depending if im playing a live show in person or streaming) through 3/4 B playback. That way I can have tracks panned for sound quality to the camera and if I want to hear it as stereo in my headphones say after I've established my beat I can just press the B monitor for headphones button and the metronome is gone and I can hear stereo audio to monitor. Lovely!! Just what I wanted! And to eleborate for any Ableton users just make sure your audio settings in preferences is arranged correctly. In my case with the 404HD I need all ins and outs mono and stereo to be on. And so to add to this I can also plug my single PA speaker to output 2 main or playback and have sound simultaneously in conjunction to what I mentioned above. So basiaclly I can record stereo to video while projecting to a small crowd while i perform live and still have the ability to monitor with a click that no one can hear except me. PERFECTO!!!!
@@TheAudioDabbler Do you know how to route output in Garageband? Doesn't seems to work there. Pretty poor they don't have a full manual for ALL functions. They do sell it cheap and for the price it's a great card but why pack it with so many options without telling how to use them? Great work! Thanks!
Tommy Larsson uhh i suppose you open the settings of garageband, and select under audio the output to umc404hd. I use logic so i suppose it is quite similar.
@@ernstzjw6971 Yes thats the basic settings and Garageband can't route to more than Left - Right output as Logic probably can. As I was mainly looking for an extra output for another mix reference speaker I wanted to use the playback output B for that. As I couldnt route the signal in Garageband I thought It wouldn't work. Although, playback output A send the same signal as the main out so if I want to only listen to an extra reference speaker I can just turn the main volume down on Behringer and control the volume on my extra speaker on my Daw. Thats a workaround in Garageband. Can't have it all in a free program.
I just purchased the UMC1820 version and waiting on shipping, but this vid really explains the signal path. I'm hoping I can get my analog gear running through studio one with this.
You should be able to. I really like mine so far. Plenty of routing options. Thanks for checking out my video. Let me know how everything works out for you.
I'm new to this and I just got my 404HD playing audio from the mic AND PC thanks to your explanation. Much appreciated! I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong.
Thanks for this. I didn't need all the info, just enough to get me to be able to sample out of the UMC404 and into my Circuit Rhythm. You put me on the right track.
Thank you for this video. I was just about to buy a 4 channel mixer in order to mix Amp Sim Out & Lexicon Out. The Mix knob between Direct Ins & Playback worked like a charm. Also, using Main Out instead of Playback Out lets me drive my cabinet for home/gig situations.
That was one of my own questions before I bought the interface so I wanted to make sure I did a video explaining it as best as I could so others who might have had the same question got the answer.
Steve, I understand. First time I watched this video, I didn't get it either. But... A simple answer on splitting the signal when playing live with your band: Send audio that you don't want the crowd to hear to 3/4. Press the "Monitor A/B" button down and now the sound that you don't want the crowd to hear is only coming through your headphones in the front of the Behringer UMC404HD (or 3/4 output in the back of the Behringer UMC404HD).
@@RSLosed The presenter here is not all that clear, this interface is really not all that complicated. this lengthy explanation makes it seem a lot more complicated.
Hello, thank you for your video, but im struggling to connect an external compressor to it. Basically, I was able to compress mic/guitar/bass and etc. but I would like to compressor an internal PC music players (aimp, itunes) and so far I was not able to figure it out. Would help me please?
You would need to put the compressor on the output since that is where the interface would send any sounds from the PC. If you were trying to record it, then you could always route it back into one of the channels in sort of a loopback setup.
@@TheAudioDabbler ok, thank you for your reply, but how to properly set it up as an output? Because the connections are pretty straightforward for me (I have SCL2 Art Stereo Compressor) I have basically Input/Output (that are bonded with one cable together into the one of the inputs on Behringer) and I have detector loop and that's it :( artproaudio.com/framework/uploads/2018/06/om_scl2.pdf
This video helps alot. I use Mixcraft 8 and I want to make the most use out of this I already have it but only have a rudimentary understanding of how it works this is explaining alot more it's very useful thank you
You sir are an absolute legend, I really need to start learning my equipment before I end up banging my head against a wall trying to find a video like this. Excellent work 👍
I had a 2017 iPad Pro 10.5" and no sound from the UMC404....this quirk had me confused for a while as I know my way around audio interfaces (I have 5 of them, all working no problem)....Please read on if this is relevant: Remember to turn up the volume controls on the iPad itself. For some reason the digital audio signal is routed via the volume management on the iPad before it gets sent out via the USB back to the interface. I don't know if this applies to other interface brands or not but it is critical to achieving a good output signal.
Good explanation - thx. One other thing I’d like to do, is have the usb from iPad appear at the *inputs* so I could use the inserts to route to effects like hardware reverb. I guess I could cable that, being careful to avoid feedback ...but wondering, on a long shot, if there’s a software routing way to accomplish the same.
You managed to explain the outputs better than the manual in about 10 seconds. All i wanted to know is if the 4 outputs are individual or just split. The manual doesn't say, it is quite confusing and i do this for living...
Question: I wasn't able to discern from the video, but can 4 people use headphones on this Audio Interface while playing their respective instruments and hear the playback while they're playing? That's what I'm trying to do. One person on electric drums, one person on bass or guitar, and one singer. I have all of the instruments, cables, PC, Audio Interface, etc. I just need to know if it is possible and where to plug the headsets. Thanks!
hey mate, im looking to use this device as a backing track set up for my band. are you able to route outputs to 1, 2, 3, and 4 individually of each and they be controlled separately of each other at a mixing desk? ie, tracks 1 would play a sample, track 2 would play a bass sample, track three would be something else and so on?
Same question here. I hope that the main outs and the playback outputs can add up to 8 individual outputs? (4 playback outputs, 2 xlr main outs, 2 TRS main out)
Thanks for this. You'd think that Behringer would have explained some of this in their manual, but from what I can see all you get is nothing more than a quick start guide :-(
SUUUPER helpful explanation. But I'm using this for doing a drum lesson through zoom.. And I was wondering if my MIC plugged into Ch1 and my Electronic Kit stereo out plugged into Ins 3-4 could be heard together.. IN a stereo field.. when I have ZOOM MICROPHONE set to U-PHORIA "IN" 1-2.
I have 2 keyboards (both in stereo) and I'm running Mainstage. So, I should run the USB from the UMC404HD to my hub (along with the USBs from both keyboards, and the USB to my MacBook Pro). Assuming I tell Mainstage (or Logic) where I want the output to go, it should work, right? For example.... Keyboard 1 is assigned in my DAW to channels (1) left and (2) right. Keyboard 2 is assigned in my DAW to channels 3 (Left) and 4 (Right), respectively. On the back of the UMC404HD, I run (1/L) and (2/R) outputs to the left and right inputs for my mixer (for Keyboard 1). Then, I run (3/L) and (4/R) to the left and right inputs for my mixer (for Keyboard 2). Result, I get a stereo mix from my mixer, right?
I bought a Topping DX3 PRO, an Headphone amplifer, how can I connct it to the UMC 404 HD? Should I go from the output of the amplifier to playback outputs of the audio interface? With rca stereo?
say, does the XLR and 6.5mm main output work simultaneously or we can only use either one of them? I don't have any spare speakers around so I can't test this myself.
I have never used playback inputs. Only reason I use the back part of the interface is for my Monitors. I wonder what you are referring to when you say playbacks.
Rocken Byanjankar so playback is only going to play what the computer is outputting, it will not monitor the physical inputs Like the main outputs will. I think it’s more of a DJ type thing but there are other uses for them.
Thanks for this explanation 👌🏿, I have a question : can we use the playback output like a return such as in ear monitoring for each musician? Thanks for your answer!
The playback 1/2 will always mirror the main outs. So as long as you were using it just for in ear monitors it might work but if it is your main interface to the computer then I would not trust that it would work.
Thanks for this explanation. One questions: I would like to use the "stereo/mono" button to control the audio coming from my PC, so i have a mono switch available to me at all time. Currently i have the following settings on my UMC 204HD (nearly identical to the 404): Audio cables running from playback 1-2 to inputs 1 & 2 The output selected in windows is OUT 1-2 Mix knob turned to Input Monitor A/B selected to A. Connected to pc via USB This seems to work, and doesnt seem to create any kind of loop. When selecting mono, the sound is fully mono. I have my monitors connected to the Main Out L & R, and headphones to the headphone jack. But there is a weird anomaly: The Inputs 1 & 2 start to clip already at about 10-15% input gain when turning Gain 1 & Gain 2 knobs. Even with the Pad button pressed (which "reduces input level for connected sources when engaged."), I am hearing the sound at pretty decent volumes when the knobs are at 0%. If i have the volume in windows turned to 100, the 204HD has clipping light flashing already at 0% input gain. Any idea why this could be?
For Garageband users! Be aware of that Garageband can't route sounds to different outputs, in case you want to use all of the four outputs on Behringer. Meaning that "monitor A and B" button will only work as a on and off button for the headphones. If you want to use a second pair of monitors for reference you can do so even with the limits in Garageband. Connect your reference speakers to "playback output A" (it sends the same signal as "main out") and turn down the "main out" volume. Then you only hear the reference speakers. You can't control the "playback output A" volume from the Behringer so you have to control it from your daw, amp or active speakers. This is for Garageband users and not for those who can route the sound to different outputs of Behringer.
nice vid thanx. this confusion might be of interest or at the very least provoke some laughter. connected main L/R out of a zoom playback device to the main L/R jack outs of the UMC-404HD by accident (TS jacks). its routed via a patch bay in a half-normal configuration. i can hear the playback from my zoom in my monitors. neither level knob/mix knob change playback volume, nor can i change playback level via computer. to clarify i have the umc connected to amp/monitors via the xlr outs. why can i hear the zoom playback? is the signal somehow getting to a mixer stage perhaps because of using theTS rather than TRS jack, or am i going macadamian?
I'm new to this and I have a situation with my interface. When I press the monitor button on A, nothing can be heard, but when I put it on B, only the left side can be heard. What can I do to make the A button be heard?
My question is I Have 2 sets os speakers, can I send what im playing on my guitar to one set, and the playback song on my computer to another set ? And also when I'm using my headphones can I listen to both the playback on my computer and my guitar ?
Depends. Recording into a DAW from your iPad, can be simple, if you have a Mac or something like an iConnectAudio4+ interface. It would really depend on what current gear you have. Let me know and I can advise. I have been meaning to do a video on this topic.
I have my headphones connected to A 1/2 but i cant control the volume on it, its a bit too loud by a little so im trying to lower it and ive used every nob and nothing. I need help
I have this interface. I want to record and playback quad music from my 4 channel analog reproducer, (tape deck or record player, etc.) How do I route the four separate channels to a DAW in windows 10 and then back out again to reproduce the digital music. Thanks (Frustrated in Texas).
Thank you for this clarifitaion! One more question. If I would like to connect a headphone (through a cable adapter) to the playback outs, would it be able to drive a headphone?
That may work but I never tested it. I know that line level like the play back outputs have a different impedance than the headphone outs. Plus you have no control over the PB volume except through the software. If you are trying to hookup multiple headphones then a small 4 channel headphone amp might be a better option. It would also work if you are wanting to monitor out the playback.
Hey, thanks for yout video. I would want to know how could I send a metronome to the phones, while all the playback goes to the main out? Thanks a lot!
Thanks for the info on audio routing. I am having an issue that I have not been able to find any help on. I used to be able to play audio from a windows source, such as VLC player, and record it to another windows app (Audacity or Nero Wave Editor), using my UMC404HD as the sound card. I'm not sure what happened but now the only 'input' options I get from Audacity or Wave Editor is Behringer 1-2, 1-4, or 3-4. I no longer get the option to use the USB connection as the input source. I hope I'm explaining this correctly, and I'm hoping you can help. Thanks.
Just getting started helping my church. They have this box and were going to go out to the DSLR like your other video. Which was great! If they have a mixer for remote mics. How do I get that into this unit. Is it only XLR?
As far as inputs, the inputs are combo jacks, meaning they will take XLR or 1/4 inch cables. You could go out of the mixer into one of the input jacks depending on how many you are already using.
Okay, If I had 2 PCs and Bookshelf Speakers hooked up to this, I route the PCs on 1/2 channels, I will be able to use my headphones to hear from both PCs and channel A? And if I have the bookshelf speakers to the 3rd channel, I would just flip to the B channel to listen to bookshelf speakers? This theoretical works, right?
I have monitors out playback 1&2. and connected to my PC. It works for most of apps except NUX amp. I can only get sound if I connect the monitors to Main outs. Any way to make it work with playback ports?
really nice video. I had to watch it twice. It seems simple, but it is not. A bit disappointing that we cannot control 2 pair of speakers with A/B button. However, you did not talk about the inserts. Any video soon or later? That is another topic that make my head spinning, since i am trying to figure out how to connect the Y cable from insert to my analog compressor and back to Logic Pro..... Thanks
hi, i have a question, can the 4 monitor outputs available be used together to issue 4 different channels? or is there another way that this soundcard can output 4 different channels from the laptop. thank you
@TheAudioDabbler i have two questions 1.if i put the knob all the way to playback i obtain a very disturbing background noise, something like a rustle... i can't find a way to remove it. 2, if i use the audio interface on windows i obtain a very low output volume, no way to enhance it
I'm using the umc404 for zoom and wyzant but there is no input level detected on inputs 3 and 4 of the interface. Pressing the stereo and a/b button doesn't fix it.
Hi, could you check if I can routing so the 4 mono input will come out 4 mono output distintively ? I am thinking using the UMC404HD as a recording during live performance . So I will hook up 4 Instruments in 4 input can I have them come out seperately 4 out put and into the mixer ? (the stage sound engineer only kind enough to let me do just that). The reason is to record the instrument on multitrack like and later mix in post.
Yes as long as you route it via software it would work. Doubt channel 1 to our put 1, chan 2 to output 2. And so on. That’s the biggest downside to this interface is that all the routing is based on whatever software you use. Not great for standalone situations.
I recently purchased this interface, but I'm having a dickens of time trying to locate the user manual. The unit came with a "starter guide", but my audio engineer needs more specs. Anyone got an idea where it can be downloaded?
Great stuff. Thank you, quick question though…can I route the click/metronome to 3 or 4 so I can live loop, but the audience doesn’t hear the metronome…thanks again for your kind efforts, awesome work man.
Depends on what you were using to do live looping. If it is software based then yes. It if it hardware then it might depend on the hardware. The biggest downside to the UMC-404 is that there are no physical controls for the routing. You have to route things via software.
Doing a long shot by asking this question, but is there any way on the UMC 204HD / 404 HD that we can control the output / volume for the PLAYBACK / OUTPUT that uses the RCA? the 1/2 & 3/4 outputs. I can't figure out how to reduce the volume or at least control it in anyway via the interface
Unfortunately there is no way via the interface to control the PB outputs. I always used software to do that. I am pretty sure they just send out a line level output signal. So you would need to route them out to a mixer or use a DAW or iPad app like AUM that has a virtual mixer.
That’s for the reply !! I understand kinda what you are saying . I would think that there is a way to overdub a easier way . It seems to me the only way to track with this setup is in real time . For instance , If i lay down my drum track and they decide they want a shaker track or some Sort of percussion , how would I listen to the drum tracks I just laid down and then lay down a percussion track ? I can’t seem to do that which cannot be correct . With the UMC404HD I have to turn the mix knob to the right to here playback and then I have drums lagging in the mix . I am hoping I am missing something ...
what is your audio buffer set at? what DAW? When you have the mix knob to in, it is direct monitoring, and when its PB, its monitoring the playback. I don't think its the interface, it seems like there is latency in the DAW. So one option, depending on the DAW you are using, would be to turn the mix knob all the way to PB, and use the DAW to monitor the armed track you want to add a shaker on. If that make sense.
Thank you so much, I burned a whole day trying to figure out the pb and main outs, so out simply, pb ONLY outputs digital audio, main outputs both audio ins and digital.
This is great, thanks! I'm considering buying it. I'm just a little confused by the whole TRS input affair. So as I understand it, say, if you plug a stereo signal into input 1 via TRS, is it gonna disable input 2? Or do these TRS sockets not process stereo signals, and you'd have to split the stereo to two wires into inputs 1 + 2? Thanks!
From my understanding, it will not disable input 2. you would still have to send signal to both inputs 1 and 2 in order to record stereo. TRS is really for balanced and unbalanced inputs. i could be wrong on this.
Please my bass drum kick is not coming out in all my recording with this 404HD. Everything is good from my Behringer eurodesk sx3242fx mixer. Please What should I do. Anyone should help. Thanks
I just bought my audio interface UMC 404HD, but my problem is before that? in Audacity, I just got a stereo channel (1-2 or 3-4), even with MME, Win Direct Sound or WASAPI. How setup to get mono inputs?
first you need to use the ASIO driver from Behringer made for the UMC404HD (you can find it on their website or just search UMC404HD driver). Once you have installed that, you can activate the mono input 1-4 from your DAW (just google on how to activate multiple input for your DAW). And I suggest that you use different DAW as the Audacity is pretty basic (you can try Reaper, Tracktion Waveform Free, Sonar Cakewalk just to name a few).
I got a Rode and an Euphoria. The last being connected USB to PC and plug ins, but effects do not seems to be coming out while mike is. Not sure if with the software shown, I can rout and have effects with only one external device such as the euphoria or Rode.
This was VERY helpful in understanding that most outputs are coming from the USB. How do I send audio to the USB? I'm using a UMC 1820 (the same just bigger) plugged into a PC running Traction Waveform 11 as my DAW/recording software. I tried using that and also Voicemeeter Banana to send audio back and thus be able to plug in speakers to my interface, but I still only get audio out on the 1-2 output, and none of the others. Supposadly this interface has several outputs, but I can only use one.
I have my pedal board/chain plugged into the first input, and I have rca cables going to my studio monitor speakers. How can I listen to the live noise through my speakers? Really confused..
I've got a question also regarding the routing of the UMC-404HD. I'm thinking of buying this interface if it's possible besides using 2 channels by themselves for Mic In and Bass Guitar In and use the remaining 2 channels for connecting (or sort of inserting) an external Mixer using the 2 In channels and any (which?) of the 2 Out channels of the Interface to be able to connect more things via the Mixer. So my question would be: is my plan achievable with the UMC-404HD and how? Any help is highly appreciated - thanks!
I have connected my monitors to the MAIN OUT with the latest 4.59 drivers and the IN 1-2/OUT 1-2 selected in sound settings and everything selected in my DAW but still the mic sometimes records sometimes not and when i go on youtube sometimes it plays the sound of a video and most of the times it says ' if playback doesnt start, restart your device'...What do i do?
Hi there, great video, thanks. I just purchased a 404HD and am trying to get it to work with Cakewalk. Q. How do I loopback the audio from my PC (eg. a jam track on RUclips) so I can record it in Cakewalk. I can hear the audio through my speakers but for some reason it is not being routed to cakewalk. I can play instruments or sing into microphone plugged into Input 1 for example and it is routed to cakewalk and records ok. Any ideas?
The behringer does not have a built in loopback routing option. There are some loopback software that seems to work pretty good. Since the 404HD does have 4 outputs, you might could loopback yourself using some audio cables. I did this with an iPad but depending on the OS you might be able to achieve something similar. ruclips.net/video/qe63ZqW6H-E/видео.htmlsi=4ZAquqlLFSFP7f9R
hi! i have a question. i have the umc204HD wich is almost like yours. i am currently using pro tools, it recognizes the outs 1-2 and 3-4 but when i try to select 3-4 outs in a track it doesn't even appear as an option. i've been searching for info about why this happens but can't find anything. if someone knows it would be a lot of help. Great video by de way! Thanks a lot
Hi, great explanation! Thnx for that! It has come to my understanding that if I'll try to route the different playback outs as different mono outs pb 1+2 will be the same as the main outs? Meaning I can only have the main outs+2 extra mono outs or am I wrong?
Is it impossible to use the UMC1820 completely "offline" (dawless)? Example: I want to use a few synths with my Synthstrom Deluge but I can't get sound out of the Line Outs without activating my DAW/FL Studio where I have to spend time routing like Inputs 5-6 to Line-Out 5-6, etc....!! So annoying to be forced to have a DAW open when a audio interface should just be routing each input to each line output?
I agree, it is crazy to have to use a DAW but not sure how you could control the routing with the limited physical buttons. Maybe a firmware update could allow you to bake certain routing options into it. Really not designed to be a mixer though. I do use my iPad and an app called AUM, which is a virtual mixer. Works really well.
im trying to hook a subwoofer into this behringer piece, i've set the "main outs", 2 for my 2 way monitor, and 2 for the sub the problem is: I have to cut frequencies on my 2 way monitor, in order to get a good frequence balance between the sub and the monitors. since my old mackie doesnt have a hi pass cutoff, I have to do it on windows, and even tho my sub is on the second "main out" of the UMC404HD, it cannot control it independently, it cuts frequencies on the sub too...
So the Main outputs and the PB (Playback) outputs 1/2 mirror each other. If you want to use the sub, try sending the signal to channels 3 or 4 as well and hook the sub up to PB 3 or 4.
5 years later, still a super useful video. I’ve just started using Amplitube 5 and Tonex but realized all of the tones were nearly identical, or had a hint of clean/unprocessed bass. Your video helped me realize thst my settings were wrong for listening to only processed/modeled output. Thanks!

Well done!
You cleared the main thing holding me back from buying this mixer which was the A/B monitoring for USB. Thanks man, its the only explanation online
So much time spent looking for such a simple f@#$ing question, and here I have found the answer. Thanks man.
Glad it helped. One of my main questions about this interface before I bought it. Which is why I wanted to post a video explaining it.
PERFECTO!!!!
glad my video helped.
Behinger legit sent me the link to this video. Bless your kind soul

Thats a workaround in Garageband. Can't have it all in a free program.
@@tommylarsson2025 Is there any setting that you can choose outputs 3-4?
Thanks for taking the time to make this video to answer my question :) Really good explanation that I am sure will be useful to many people.
You are very welcome. This is one video that I could not find myself when researching this interface. Hopefully it will help others in their journey.
Couldn't figure out how to do the pass-through from usb AND playback back to headphones. This helped me figure it out. Thumbs up!
@@TheAudioDabbler workin out great, very solid i/o for the money! Thanks
Thanks, with your help I managed to get my guitar on my headset while recording, thank you so much !
Good job man! This is the ONLY clear vid on what the mix knob does! Well done!
That was one of my own questions before I bought the interface so I wanted to make sure I did a video explaining it as best as I could so others who might have had the same question got the answer.
Great video! I couldn't understand why I couldn't listen to the instruments connected to the input in real time. Thank you!
less than NO idea what you're talking about.
i'll come back when im smarter.
Less than zero? Make that negative infinity.
he did not say anything relevant anyway.
Lmfao I did not understand squat either
@@RSLosed The presenter here is not all that clear, this interface is really not all that complicated. this lengthy explanation makes it seem a lot more complicated.
Thank you! No one has explained this as well as you
Quick question, which app did you use on the iPad and which adapter to you use? Thanks in advance
Because the connections are pretty straightforward for me (I have SCL2 Art Stereo Compressor) I have basically Input/Output (that are bonded with one cable together into the one of the inputs on Behringer) and I have detector loop and that's it :( artproaudio.com/framework/uploads/2018/06/om_scl2.pdf
cool. i need all 4 outputs working at the same time. 3 and 4 will play logic pro to broadcast. 1 and 2 will be in the house.
This video helps alot. I use Mixcraft 8 and I want to make the most use out of this I already have it but only have a rudimentary understanding of how it works this is explaining alot more it's very useful thank you
I had more idea about routing before I watched this video 😂
Most awesome technical review ever on the internet ! thank you
You sir are an absolute legend, I really need to start learning my equipment before I end up banging my head against a wall trying to find a video like this. Excellent work 👍
Great vid bro, just what the people needed.
You just saved my evening. Thanks for sharing!
Glad I could help!
Question:
I wasn't able to discern from the video, but can 4 people use headphones on this Audio Interface while playing their respective instruments and hear the playback while they're playing?
(4 playback outputs, 2 xlr main outs, 2 TRS main out)
you sir have won the internets....
Well explained. All clear. That were my findings too.
Thanks for the explanation, helping me make an important decision
I have 2 keyboards (both in stereo) and I'm running Mainstage. So, I
should run the USB from the UMC404HD to my hub (along with the USBs from
both keyboards, and the USB to my MacBook Pro). Assuming I tell
Mainstage (or Logic) where I want the output to go, it should work,
right? For example.... Keyboard 1 is assigned in my DAW to channels
(1) left and (2) right. Keyboard 2 is assigned in my DAW to channels 3
(Left) and 4 (Right), respectively. On the back of the UMC404HD, I run
(1/L) and (2/R) outputs to the left and right inputs for my mixer (for
Keyboard 1). Then, I run (3/L) and (4/R) to the left and right inputs
for my mixer (for Keyboard 2). Result, I get a stereo mix from my
mixer, right?
I bought a Topping DX3 PRO, an Headphone amplifer, how can I connct it to the UMC 404 HD? Should I go from the output of the amplifier to playback outputs of the audio interface? With rca stereo?
say, does the XLR and 6.5mm main output work simultaneously or we can only use either one of them? I don't have any spare speakers around so I can't test this myself.
Is there any way to turn off the playbacks while keeping the headphones on?
Looking for this too
Same here. Looking to track with headphones on and a click track but the click comes through the monitors and gets picked up on the mic.
You could always use active speakers for your monitors and just turn them off when you don't want any sound to come out during recording.
thank you for this - such a good explanation
I have never used playback inputs. Only reason I use the back part of the interface is for my Monitors. I wonder what you are referring to when you say playbacks.
Rocken Byanjankar so playback is only going to play what the computer is outputting, it will not monitor the physical inputs Like the main outputs will. I think it’s more of a DJ type thing but there are other uses for them.
If I'm using a headphone amp would I be plugging it into the front headphone jack or in the 1 or 2 in the back?
I would use the front headphone port.
@@TheAudioDabbler for whatever reason I can't hear myself or cohost who sits next to me when I have it plugged in thru the front.
@@TheAudioDabbler thanks you. I will try it. And I find the good word for what I'm looking for : it's Cue Mix.
Again, thanks for your answer! 👌🏿👍
Thanks for this explanation.
One questions: I would like to use the "stereo/mono" button to control the audio coming from my PC, so i have a mono switch available to me at all time. Currently i have the following settings on my UMC 204HD (nearly identical to the 404):
Audio cables running from playback 1-2 to inputs 1 & 2
The output selected in windows is OUT 1-2
Mix knob turned to Input
Monitor A/B selected to A.
Connected to pc via USB
This seems to work, and doesnt seem to create any kind of loop. When selecting mono, the sound is fully mono. I have my monitors connected to the Main Out L & R, and headphones to the headphone jack.
But there is a weird anomaly:
The Inputs 1 & 2 start to clip already at about 10-15% input gain when turning Gain 1 & Gain 2 knobs.
This was extremely helpful! Thanks man!
Thank you so much for this video.
Can i connect directly from the umc to the speakers for the stage purpose, if so please advise how to do it
Excellent, bravo, you saved my day.......BIG BIG thanks.
Good information thx...hey how would you record audio / MIDI from your iPad into your DAW
Depends. Recording into a DAW from your iPad, can be simple, if you have a Mac or something like an iConnectAudio4+ interface. It would really depend on what current gear you have. Let me know and I can advise. I have been meaning to do a video on this topic.
Thanks for review! Tell please app name. If app will be closed routing will works well? routing setup saved in card memory or not?
I have my headphones connected to A 1/2 but i cant control the volume on it, its a bit too loud by a little so im trying to lower it and ive used every nob and nothing. I need help
can i get a signal out my dj software directly to the MAIN OUT without getting audio from the 4 Inputs on it?
I have this interface. I want to record and playback quad music from my 4 channel analog reproducer, (tape deck or record player, etc.) How do I route the four separate channels to a DAW in windows 10 and then back out again to reproduce the digital music.

amazin vid bro been looking for this!
thaaaaank you. gotta make sure before i buy. wish they provided more info about this
Thanks for the video , very informative. But why didnt you use the unit itself to show the buttons, knobs , etc? the drawing is a little confusing.
You are welcome. When I was first thinking about the video, it seemed less confusing using a drawing than the actual unit.
I’m trying to figure how to isolate headphones from the monitors. I’m lost. I want to only hear out of the headphones when I’m recording vocals.
Kind of what I'm looking for myself! Still sort of confused after watching this video to be honest.
Thanks.
Same problem here , any solution yet ? Thanks
I've had the UMC404HD for some time now and can't seem to set two channels to stereo (ex:3-4). Is the ipad software the only way to do that?
Okay,
If I had 2 PCs and Bookshelf Speakers hooked up to this, I route the PCs on 1/2 channels, I will be able to use my headphones to hear from both PCs and channel A?
And if I have the bookshelf speakers to the 3rd channel, I would just flip to the B channel to listen to bookshelf speakers?
This theoretical works, right?
Very good and very helpful!
Thanks
How do you use multiple mics with this interface in GarageBand in MacBook
hi, i have a question, can the 4 monitor outputs available be used together to issue 4 different channels? or is there another way that this soundcard can output 4 different channels from the laptop. thank you
yes, as long as whatever software you are using can see all 4 outputs, they can each have different audio going out of them.
@@TheAudioDabbler What does the a-b switch on the front panel do?
It switches what is being monitored by the headphones. A output 1/2 B output 3/4
@@TheAudioDabbler Is it possible that 4 playback and 2 play out can make 6 different sounds?
Unfortunately not. The Playbacks 1/2 are the same as the main outs.
How can I configure and extend my interface to get more outputs for a surround configuration using adat on Mac and logic
@@TheAudioDabbler you are simply awesome…and yes, I am using Ableton, so thank you, I’m gonna get this interface next paycheck :)
For instance , If i lay down my drum track and they decide they want a shaker track or some
Sort of percussion , how would I listen to the drum tracks I just laid down and then lay down a percussion track ?
Thank you so much for this video!
Really helpful video thanks a lot
Thank you so much, I burned a whole day trying to figure out the pb and main outs, so out simply, pb ONLY outputs digital audio, main outputs both audio ins and digital.
Glad I could help
This is great, thanks! I'm considering buying it. I'm just a little confused by the whole TRS input affair. So as I understand it, say, if you plug a stereo signal into input 1 via TRS, is it gonna disable input 2? Or do these TRS sockets not process stereo signals, and you'd have to split the stereo to two wires into inputs 1 + 2? Thanks!
From my understanding, it will not disable input 2. you would still have to send signal to both inputs 1 and 2 in order to record stereo. TRS is really for balanced and unbalanced inputs. i could be wrong on this.
@@TheAudioDabbler Thanks! That makes sense. I have little experience with balanced signals as I'm more of a guitarist than an audio guy, heh.
Please my bass drum kick is not coming out in all my recording with this 404HD. Everything is good from my Behringer eurodesk sx3242fx mixer. Please What should I do. Anyone should help. Thanks
Hi, which channel should I use only with headphones connected? A 1-2 or B 3-4? I can hear with both, but does anything change?
Will be great if the Beringher had a competent quickstart guide
You have to route the audio via your software to get outputs from the other outputs. You cannot do it with just the interface.
I'm a bit late to the show but how can I get that little mixer utility for my UMC404HD? thanks
That mixer was an app called AUM on my iPad.
Unplug Power and plug back in. Works everytime it happens to me
Hi there, great video, thanks.
I did this with an iPad but depending on the OS you might be able to achieve something similar.

hi! i have a question. i have the umc204HD wich is almost like yours. i am currently using pro tools, it recognizes the outs 1-2 and 3-4 but when i try to select 3-4 outs in a track it doesn't even appear as an option. i've been searching for info about why this happens but can't find anything. if someone knows it would be a lot of help.
Correct.
Works really well.
im trying to hook a subwoofer into this behringer piece, i've set the "main outs", 2 for my 2 way monitor, and 2 for the sub
the problem is: I have to cut frequencies on my 2 way monitor, in order to get a good frequence balance between the sub and the monitors.
since my old mackie doesnt have a hi pass cutoff, I have to do it on windows, and even tho my sub is on the second "main out" of the UMC404HD, it cannot control it independently, it cuts frequencies on the sub too...
So the Main outputs and the PB (Playback) outputs 1/2 mirror each other. If you want to use the sub, try sending the signal to channels 3 or 4 as well and hook the sub up to PB 3 or 4.
