    Pro tip: bypassing the Behringer's preamps for less noise when recording line level devices: Use standard ts cable and plug about 80% into the insert jack (so that the tip of the cable touches the ring of the jack which is the return input).

    Good to finally know what those are for. I don't understand the advantage of using the insert as opposed to simply direct-lining a chain directly into the front input jack -- for instance, 1/4" from guitar to pedal, 1/4' from pedal to input 1. As I write this though I imagine it might be convenient for some setups to simply have the outboard effects set up via the insert and to swap gear in the front input without having to fuss with it. In any case thanks for the info!

    • @EricFaries
      @EricFaries  5 лет назад +3

      If you use outboard gear like compressors and eq then you'd prefer to have them as inserts so all you habe to do is plug whatever Mic you want into the interface. It has its advantages in keeping signal chain a bit more clean and convenient for swapping stuff. Specially since most outboard uses line ins and outs anyway.

    • @jccpiano
      @jccpiano 5 лет назад +1

      @@EricFaries Yes, it makes complete sense now -- this could save a lot of time and keep things clean, organized, and efficient when in workflow. Nothing worse than having to crawl behind the rack to fiddle with I/O's every time you want to swap a mic.

    Can I ask your help a bit? I'm still super confused :D so I'm beginner at all this, but the setup I'm trying to put together would be 2 lines:
    A - Behringer Crave + Behringer Superfuzz + JOYO R-09 VISION + Zoom - MS-70CDR reverb
    B - Arturia Keylab Essential 88
    Line A would make a base drone music kinda ambient music/noise, and I would use the keyboard to play the melody on the top. Later I would also like to add some kind of drum machine or sample. So my question... how do I connect all these? Is the UMC204HD suitable to then have all these connected into my computer / recording device (Zoom H1n)? Should I connect the keyboard into my laptop directly, and the other stuff through the interface? How do I use this setup without a laptop? (live set)
    If the UMC204HD is not suitable, then can you suggest me something else?

    can you chain the pedals before sending it back the insert? like for example:
    Insert>Compressor>Chorus>Delay>Reverb>Back to Insert

    • @robertwulfert6278
      @robertwulfert6278 11 месяцев назад

      Absolutely! This is actually one of the many reasons why having (and using) a proper effects loop (insert) is so much preferable to simply adding effects directly to the instrument, or even worse, the mic signal:

    • @robertwulfert6278
      @robertwulfert6278 11 месяцев назад

      - If you chain many pedals before the preamp (front side input on the Behringer), all the noise, interferences and the quality loss affects the (weak) signal before any amplification has taken place. These disturbances thus have a much greater impact on your recording signal. An effects loop, on the other hand, operates at line level, which is quite a bit louder than an electric guitar output and much louder than a mic signal. The interferences produced by your effects chain should be negligible to this line signal amplitude.

    • @robertwulfert6278
      @robertwulfert6278 11 месяцев назад

      - Some effects like compression or limiters (the ones that affect the amplitude of a signal) are usually set up to work with line-level input signals. A guitar signal might still work, but probably not optimally. However, a mic signal is definitely not suited as an input signal for these effects. If you look at channel strips for mic signal processing (e.g., dbx 286 s), the signal is always preamplified first to bring it up to line level and then processed further.

    • @robertwulfert6278
      @robertwulfert6278 11 месяцев назад

      - If you use standard effects pedals before the preamp, you sacrifice any chance of getting a balanced input signal from your instrument/mic to your interface. Effect loops use unbalanced connections (standard mono with one ground and one hot wire) by default. Since working at line level, they are relatively robust against interferences (see above), even for long cable connections and many serial throughputs. Again, this might not be of great importance for a guitar signal, but for microphones, this would mean that you would have to use an XLR-to-mono-jack adapter cable, which converts the balanced mic signal to an unbalanced one, which you would plug into your effects chain. If you use this as an input signal to the interface and amplify it with the gain appropriate for a mic-level signal, you will get MUCH more noise and interferences on your recording signal.
      Also, I think some interfaces by default assume a different input level for XLR vs. jack (TRS) plug, since usually an XLR corresponds to a mic and a jack corresponds to a guitar or other instrument. So you might even have to convert back from mono-jack to XLR before inserting it into the interface input. Total nightmare!
