this video is so helpful. thanks for taking the time to put it together. every time im trying to pick a soundscape for my levels i just come here to listen to them first!
Hey, I'm writing a blog about soundscapes and wondering if can have your permission to link this video in my blog? I want to give readers some soundscape samples and this is best one I could find.
ambient noises have always been iconic in hl/hl2/cs games. valve understood how to create an artificial mood in the maps by adding the right soundscapes to the respective locations. these made the maps exciting, tense, sometimes eerie and sinister to walk through and play
Oooh hahaha I thought this 'Vertigo' was some kind of special sound format :P Gee, not that I type a lot of comments on your videos but every time so far I make myself look like I am from another planet with weird questions and shit.
Thanks Philip! Do you know if all sounds have the same bit rate? And is there a way to get a list of the active sounds and there bit rate live in-game, like on a private server?
I didn't sure which one is correct so I write both.. It doesn't matter. So if I understand it correctly I need only vmex or BSPsource to get vmf file to load it in hammer? GSFscape is mainly to get materials models sounds or scripts from maps?
A black, dark hidden folder deep down in the Valve mind locked up and filled with all the forbidden sounds that can leak out in the big world that can be unlocked with .. hats, or something
Hey Philip, what about the soundscapes that involve music, like how Inferno has Carcelera - Reflejo Andaluz in T spawn? I'm working on a map based in Monaco and I wanted the names of a few music soundscapes to add to my map.
Nevermind, but did you try decompile some map to get vmf file to load it in hammer or not? because if you have never tried it maybe it won't work to anybody.
"To mix things up a bit I put a screamer in the video somewhere ;)" I was scared then i thought... 3kliksphilip is way too awesome to do that.... "Oh, and I was joking about the screamer. I wouldn't do that." Then i confirmed my though... Love your videos 3kliksphilip :D
Thnx man! Super useful! I picked my soundscapes from house and boathouse, and now I notice the same birds are singing outside in real life.. or have I just gone mad?!
In addtion my vmex has the latest version 0.98.. and it decompiles only maps from css.. when I want to decompile any map from csgo vmex shut down and nothing happens.. please tell me what I do wrong?
I downloaded the latest version and it seems it works it shows root with certain folders.. materials sounds models etc... but I cannot see maps.. and when I clicked on open and found some map for example yours de_elysium.. it shows only lmp files.. I need vmt and vmf to load it in hammer...
I feel like CSGO mappers don't even use soundscapes anymore lol. I know it's for gameplay reasons, but it still sucks when a map has zero ambient sound like they used to.
It still tells the same... simply.."In component of aplication was unhandled exciption and attempted to read protected memory" I try to decompile many maps and no one works. I loaded that file you told me and then I found map I wanted to decompile and then it told that bullshit:-D
Using GCFscape, you can go into the steamapps folder and open game cache files to get the sounds. They also can be extracted, but I haven't used the software long enough to know how to even extract more than one. NOTE: The weapon sounds for some source games (Like TF2) are located in the materials cache instead of the shared and common cache files

The only benefit I can really dig into is that you can edit the sound after extracting it.
This is actually quite relaxing. Also very helpful. Good job.

It's pretty dumb that the editor can't even preview these sounds to begin with. Thanks for this.

Can you make a tutorial about logic_choreographed_scene?
E.g. I dont know how to set it up properly when I want a 2 character to say something.
I must ask - How did you find em'? :s
Or a better question, how do I listen to the L4D2s soundscape? :3
A-A-Amazing Video!!!

29Evilbunny That's not a soundscape. It's a sound entity.

This I already know, I was simply answering the question since I had the know-how.
