This is one of my favorite soap recipes. Olive oil used to be my favorite but now this coconut oil soap recipe is my favorite because it's a beauty bar that leaves your skin so smooth and very moisturized.
You will need:
54 ounces of coconut oil
9.7 ounces of lye
24.25 ounces of distilled water

I have been making soap for over 30 years and I use rain water and it works great and just seems more natural.
I use regular well water. No chemicals natural spring water. My soap is awesome!

Rain water isn't very clean,you could be getting all sorts of nasties in your soap,most what the eye can't see 😮

I just made my first homemade coconut oil soap following your simple, quick and safe instructions. I even got my note pad to write down all the fun recipes. I stopped using common brands of soap due to me itching after showering, and moved to a more natural soap. You have now changed my life when it comes to what I am using on my skin. I am big on being able to pronounce all the ingredients and knowing what exactly is in my product, so in addition to my hand whipped Shea Butter and body oils, now I have a beauty bar and homemade soap, can we say WINNING! 20% superfat recipe (non drying.. still great lather!!) .. superfat means that more of the natural oils of the coconut are left unbound in the soap .. so the skin can absorb it and become moisterised ..
33 oz coconut oil ..
4.83 ounces lye ..
12.54 oz water ..
0.5 - 1 oz Essential oils ..
I have made this .. and its a beautifully moisturising soap .. for all those that love this soap but tend to have dry skin .. hope this helps ..

I added coconut fragrance and the aroma is so relaxing as I sit in my craft/office/everything room. Thank you for all your encouragement and excellent directions for me to learn something new. This Vinegar Tip is actually a bad Tip. I love Becky and her Channel, but she isn't a professional Soaper. Using Vinegar to neutralize Lye on your Skin is a Myth. Please, do not do this, unless you want a Lye Burn. If you read the MSDS for the Lye, it even specifies to use Water to neutralize the Lye on your Skin, and not Vinegar.
The reason for this is because of the Exothermic Reaction (heat) produced. Water is neutral on the PH Scale, while Vinegar is considered an Acid. When Lye Water hits your Soap Oils, it starts to heat up because of the Acidity of the Oils.
Vinegar can absolutely neutralize Lye. But, it is only recommended to neutralize it with Vinegar on your Countertops or Floors. The Exothermic Reaction from Vinegar neutralizing Lye on your Skin will cause it to heat up much faster and can result in a Lye Burn from it. Always run the Lye Spill under Cold Water, as the heat caused on your skin won't be as bad as the Vinegar would have been.

You can use any oil in soaps AS LONG AS you run the recipe thru a LYE CALCULATOR, which will give you the correct ratio of lye to fats. There are LOTS of lye calculators online. And for those whose are wanting the recipe in metrics, just enter your quantity of fat(coconut oil) into a lye calculator that works in metrics....again you MUST run every recipe thru a lye calculator...and it will calculate your lye quantity in grams, and your water(liquid). I usually work in kilo quantities as my loaf mould takes a kilo of soap.

For Europeans:
coconut oil 1.53 Liters
Lye 275 gr
Distilled water 690 mL
US gallon equals 3.78L EU gallon equals 4.54L
Aye Aye Mon a gallon in the USA is different. not sure how else to explain
same thing. You are using the USA fluid ounce vrs the imperial fluid ounce. Also I believe you have to measure in weight, not fluid

Oh hell no. She doesn't show herself weighing the ingredients but never make soap by volume. All those ounces are WEIGHT. One ounce is 30g. You can do the math from there, but ALWAYS weigh your ingredients.

You can't substitute oils but you can however, combine oils. Olive and coconut oil make a lovely bar of soap. Just run your recipe through a lye calculator (Brambleberry's lye calculator is very easy to read.)and you shouldn't have any problems :).
I agree the mix makes a very nice body bar. I made some with pure corn oil. It took forever for them to set hard, but it was an awesome shaving soap. Very smooth and creamy lather.
Actually you can substitute oils, only if they are comparable, but you have to run it through the soap calc, which is a lye calculator.

Love it! Had to make this for my friend with allergies. This recipe, and the olive oil coconut oil recipe are the only soaps we have found that she can use. No scents at all though. Thank you so much for sharing these. ❤
Wow, Becky.....I tried this recipe because you made it sound so simple.....and it was!!!!! I made soap!!!!! Giggle...... I've watched 20-30 videos on youtube and thought....I'll never be able to do that....well, I found all of your soap making videos and I said...I can do that recipe.....And I did it!!!! I'm letting it cure now...Can't wait to use it!!! Thanks Becky!!!! I used snowflake molds and pine scent for Christmas....I figured the pine scent was close to eucalyptus so I switched it. I used the olive oil soap recipe to do that with...My sister thinks I should add some glitter in the snowflakes but....I'm not sure of that idea. ..I'm doing this coconut oil recipe next and using a coconut scent to enhance it. My mom loves coconut scent....we'll see.
+jessica kiefer You give me confidence to try it myself :-) BTW...glitter, if it gets in the eye, can cause damage because a lot of it is glass bits. Don't know if I would try it but maybe it's OK if it's in the soap.

I'll have to come up with something else.....maybe colored coconut flakes??? hmmmmmm...I need to think on this a bit.....lol Do try this soap....it was as easy as she makes it in the video.....I'm a novice soap maker here.....Now, Terri, it's not the best soap out there to be made....It's just good smelling basic soap for dummies like me. I like it...Maybe ask Becky if she could make a smaller recipe if you don't want to waste this much to try the soap....I bet she could cut her recipe down if you asked......I couldn't. +jessica kiefer Instead of glitter, you can use micas (many different colors available) from a reputable soap making supply store. I sometimes use the mica colors, as well as a translucent mica, which to me sparkles more like hardcore glitter. :)
jessica kiefer Thanks! D H's idea of using mica maybe an excellent one! Have you ever tried mica? If not, you can get mica in just about any color including silver - and it shimmers! It's more expensive per oz to buy at the store (as opposed to online) but you can get it in small quantities there to try it out and see if it works for what you want. Keep us posted as to how it turns out. OK?!!

Cold Process Soaps (like this Recipe here) need at least 72 Hours for the Saponification Process, or else you can still have Lye remaining in your Soap still. Just because it is Hard in less than 24 hours, does not mean that it is finished. There is still a process going on. The 6 week cure is to allow enough time for the water content to evaporate. Otherwise it will dissolve too fast inside a bath/shower. A fully cured bar will last a lot longer as all water has Evaporated out. But you still want to wait for Saponification to finish before using it, even if you don't wait for the evaporation to finish.

@@_Diana_S No. Most soaps are perfectly fine after 24 hours. The up to 72 hours depends a lot more in regards to the recipe and how it sets up. I feel as if soaps placed in the freezer to avoid gel phase, are the soaps that take longer to Saponify. But as I am not a master of Cold Process, this is just a theory. I much prefer Hot Process a lot better, and cooking my soap.
But to answer your question, there is no need to keep it wrapped for 3 days. Coconut Oil soaps actually get very hard (because you are using a hard oil to make the soap), and you might even want to cut it before the 24 hours is finished.
A 100% (soft/liquid) oil soap (such as Castile/Bastile soaps) are the only soaps I would recommend leaving in the mould for over 24 hrs.

Hi Marty Saint - (hmmm didn't tag you when I typed your name) - yes 100% Coconut Oil soap can be very drying BUT if you add a little extra oil as a super fat, you should be fine. You can also substitute some of the water content for a milk product like cow's milk, goat's milk, even coconut milk to keep it vegan to add some creaminess... I have made a 70% coconut oil soap and it was wonderful - but super-fatting (adding extra oils) can help too...

what did you add as a super fat, nothing was added after trace, this would be more of a stain stick
Becky's Homestead I did not see you add your Super Fat of 5 % at trace. Did you forget ? Your soap is going to be really drying to the skin !

You do not have to superfat at trace. You can calculate the superfat in the amount of oils or more accurately, the amount of lye you use in your formulation with a lye calculator. Soapcalc.net allows you to type in the amount of superfat you would like. The default is 5%.
Please see this article: candleandsoap.about.com/od/soapmakingbasics/ht/htsuperfat.htm ... towards the bottom the author states that ""Some people and/or recipes will suggest holding out your most luxurious oils or butters to add in at trace as the "superfat" oils. I've never seen any concrete tests or data on this - but I don't think it's worth the trouble.""
Apparently, this is something that is debated among soap-makers... the articles I saw state to superfat anywhere from 3-8%... but that also increases the chance of oils going rancid within your soap and you can get Dreaded Orange Spots (DOS).

Make sure to use sodium hydroxide and not potassium hydroxide. Potassium hydroxide is for liquid soap.

I cannot express enough to not trust the oil supply companies measurements on the oils. I weigh everything no matter what. I can not tell you how many times I did not get the amount that my product claimed was in the container. This can make your batch lye heavy. Please measure everything. And always use soapcalc to make sure you have the right amount of lye and water.
Hi Becky, I just wanted to let you know that I was inspired by your videos and many others to start making soap, I researched for around 3 months and have been making soap now for nearly 4 months. I particularly loved making olive oil soaps but your recipe for coconut oil beauty bar has to be my favourite. I am only making soap for my own personal use and for my family, and they all love this recipe, thank you for sharing it as i did not have a clue as to how to work the soap calculator, may in time i will get the gist of it but for now this recipe is it. Love your soaps and videos.
There is a RUclips video on how to use soapcalc. Watch it because it will be very helpful. The person goes slow and explains well. You are very smart....you can do it and you will love it because it is so helpful! :)

I used Combo Solutions lye also purchased on Amazon. The coconut oil is already in a 54oz container. It is SO MUCH fun, very calming and just peaceful time.

Hi Becky, I want to try and make some home made soap. When you make the soap is all of the equipment you use dedicated to soap making? Or can your immersion blender be used on food afterwards once it is cleaned? Just curious. And how come the lye does not ruin the plastic bucket? Thanks ahead of time for your answers.
Plastics with recycle codes 2 or 5 are safe to use with lye

As long as it says 100% lye on the label. It's usable for soap making. :)
You are looking for 100% lye as a loose white granulated powder. When I first started out making soap I bought Red Devil lye from the grocery, I didn't realize that it had hardened up (or that it mattered) and had to be chipped apart.
Normally you want a container that you can hear hear the small granules moving around, you do not want something that you will have have to bang apart and potentially through pieces around the room or into your face or eyes.
What I am using now is Rooto, "Crystals of Household 100% Lye". It's packaged in a white 16 oz plastic bottle with red blue and yellow writing. UPC 037904103025 and is listed on Amazon as "Rooto 1030 1 Lb. Drain Cleaner with Lye". That UPC code will bring up pictures in google to aid in locating it at your grocery or hardware store.

Yes, if she SF at 2%? It will strip your skin.
yes this recipe is very bad and should be removed - its dangerously drying and her promoting using vinegar on lye burns is so WRONG

When you drizzle some of the liquid off of the mixing spoon/mixer onto the main mass, it will leave an obvious bump in the material. Kind of like a thick sauce that you can see the trace of the drizzle long after you have, what (?) done the drizzling???
keepmoving15 As, another experienced soaper, this video is not the best for beginning soapers ! It lacks information, and theories of what soaping is about and why she is doing each procedure. She didn't even put in her 5% super fat into her soap. That soap is going to be really drying to the skin. There are better videos on You Tube. Soap Queen TV, and
Soaping 101, just watch from beginning. I really like Becky's other videos, but her soaping videos lack a lot of information
that is needed for the beginning soaper. Instead, of getting mad at people that are more experienced in soap making than
Becky, think about it and walk away, and consider it a learning experience.

Did you not use any other type of oil as a superfat? Coconut oil can be very drying to the skin if not highly superfated with other oils it butters.

Home Depot, Lowes, Ace Hardware, etc. It is known as "potash", "sodium hydroxide".

MrOldclunker in the pluming dept of a hardware store I got some from Tractor Supply...it is not food grade lye but works fine just make sure you get 100% lye

Please please PLEASE stop perpetuating the myth that pouring vinegar on lye burns helps. It does neutralize it (to a point, as vinegar is a very weak acid and sodium/peroxide hydroxides are very strong alkalies) but whenever you add two opposite compounds like this, there will be a chemical reaction. In this case, it's exothermic which means that adding an acid (vinegar) to a base (lye) will actually create heat. Heat on a burn? That's not what you want. According to every MSDS sheet you'll find on lye anywhere, the correct method for a lye splash on skin is to flush with cool water. Flush, flush, and flush some more. Telling people on the internet to pour vinegar on their lye burns will just cause massive injuries. Thanks for your video.

Really the major reason I have vinegar on me is because if you spill the lye it’ll help neutralize it and be easier to clean
My daughter and I have made cold process soap for several years. I have had a tiny splash or two, and the vinegar quickly neutralized it! I'm speaking from experience.

If lye is that bad why put it in soap ?
+shannon hogle I'm glad I looked, because I didn't want to ask the same question twice! I was trying to get an understanding from her as to what the lye does. I'd be afraid to use anything that contained lye on my skin and that of my kids and grandkids. Can the soap be made without the lye?

She made a video about that...most people who never made soap don't know...you cannot make soap without lye...but there is no lye in soap ;)
"soap" is the result of the chemical reaction between the lye and the oils (fat)...as she said in her video, there are no soap you will buy at the store that wasn't made with lye...even the melt and pour soap you can buy, were made at the base with lye, water and oils... :)

However, when making soap, you do have to be careful not to put too much lye in your recipe because if the ratio of lye to oil is to great of a difference, you can end up with soap that burns your skin. When making soap it is always important to make sure your ratio is safe. For first time soap makers, you should always try making soap by a tried and true recipe before you begin experimenting to make your own recipes.
+shannon hogle it cleans your skin. you let it sit for about a month to mellow out so it doesnt burn you, but you need lie to make soap. thats how you get clean

again becky...your making 100% coconut oil soap ... if your making 100% coconut oil soap it is going to be VERY drying to your skin and not to mention the PH balance of your soap .. this can be very drying and irritating to your skin .. try adding a BUTTER to this next time like coco butter , shea butter , almond butter , i think youll like this even more if you try the butters
Actually you can make 100% coconut oil soap if you add some extra for superfat to counteract the dryness. I make it all the time

Her recipe is almost perfect except that you need to subtract about 20 percent of the coconut oil and replace it with coco butter, if not you'll find that the soap will dry your skin and if you have sensitive skin it may even irritate your skin.

I need to try to make soap one day. I have had my fit bit for over a year and a half and I love it! Keeps track of my daily steps and my sleep that's what I wanted it for.
