Saw this in its first showing and never forgot it. This scene had tremendous force simply because i had never seen Brent Spiner out of makeup. Unexpectedly seeing his actual face had the miraculous quality of an inanimate statue made flesh and blood.

Noonien Soong was eccentric and unusual, but he was a damned brilliant scientist, successfully creating one of the most unique, dynamic, remarkable models of android ever. Often imitated, but never truly duplicated. And the way he always referred to Data as “son”...you can’t not sense a father’s pride in his soft spoken words.

Birthright touches me to the core of my soul. When I first viewed it in its original airing in 1993, my father was terminall ill. The episode had a powerful impact on me. My father died in 1994, 25 years ago, and this episode has lost none of that punch for me. When Dr. Soong tells Data, "You are the bird," I break down every time. TNG would be a shadow of itself if not for Brent Spiner and his deep, marvelous portrayals as Data, Dr. Soong, and even Lore. Bravo, sir! Thank you.

Brent Spiner mentioned in an interview that someone had said Tom Hiddleston could play Data in future series of Star Trek. I think Adrien Brody looks more like Brent Spiner than Tom Hiddleston and is, therefore, more likely a suitable candidate for the part of Data.
1: Adrien has the innocence needed for the part of Data.
2: Adrien and Brent have the same bone structure, and the same slender body IMHO.
3: Brent and Adrien both have the same nose.
4: I bet Adrien could portrait Lore convincingly.

I like how Brent injected different characteristics in Dr. Soong. You get that brashness, that arrogance, and yet tempered with sensitivity and compassion and imagination. A child’s wonder much like data is only expressed more so with emotion. A cyberneticist with the spirit of an artist and a dreamer. And a true father. The antithesis of Victor Frankenstein in Mary Shelley’s novel. Brilliant scene that even inspired tears when he said he was proud of his son. Data had made an incredible leap forward with his goal of becoming human.

Thank you for posting this! I just caught this episode (Birthright, Part 1) on TV today, and was hoping there was a copy out there on YT somewhere. Shame the quality isn't better, but it's better to have this copy than none at all. Data was probably the most fascinating character on TNG ... I've always admired him. And seeing the two versions of Brent Spiner side by side is fascinating, and the contrasts in their skin tone, eye color and hair styles ... you get so used to seeing Data, that sometimes you forget just how pale he is compared to a normal flesh-and-blood person. As someone else said, it's like seeing a mannequin come to life. Brent Spiner really was quite handsome, in a non-traditional, oddball sort of way. 😉

Brent Spiner's first breakout acting role was on a TV show named Night Court. He was hilarious on it, and a couple times in this scene, you can hear a shadow of his Bob Wheeler Night Court voice. Just check RUclips for Spiner Night Court. He invented that character voice in his teens, and said he never imagined anyone would pay him to do it.

Once upon a time, I, Zhuangzi, dreamt I was a butterfly, fluttering hither and thither, to all intents and purposes a butterfly. I was conscious only of my happiness as a butterfly, unaware that I was Zhuangzi. Soon I awakened, and there I was, veritably myself again. Now I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly, dreaming I am a man. Between a man and a butterfly there is necessarily a distinction. The transition is called the transformation of material things."

Having worked in theater when I saw this I really didn't understand why they put so much makeup on him for Data. Brent Spinner is very unique looking. Just normal makeup would have been fine since he is distinct enough looking to get a sense he is not quite human.
