    I have to admit, those vans handled that muddy, rocky, steep, terrain extremely well. I was super impressed. Excellent, and fun video to watch.

    Donald, Thanks for the video. I didn't know about Quigley conversions. All I knew about was the movie Quigley Down Under. If you haven't seen it, it is a good movie. Enjoyed seeing the rain you guys were in, it has been so long since we have had any rain here in Texas. Take care and be safe

    Donald, Have you thought about getting a Blucetti solar generator versus the Jackery? It has the Lithium Iron Phosphate battery versus Lithium Ion. More cycles and longer lifetime.

    Chevy express Quigley vans are the way to go IMO. Small enough to get to most places a sane person cares to go, large enough to be very comfortable.

      After the Forester was wrecked, Jason was totally advocating for me to build an Astro. I've always like them and it was definitely an option I was considering before settling on the Frontier.

    As a Suburban owner the Quigley's are so dreamy.
    You do showcase a potential down side here though: Switchbacks.
    I guess theoretically someone could get a 2500 Quadrasteer Dana 60 and retrofit it. Pretty extreme but I mean...so is Quigley (:
    I love how they're IFS now as well.

    As a single guy I can see a 4X4 van would be nice. I'm happy with my truck bed and topper, but with a van you can go from steering wheel to bed without opening a door.

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  2 года назад +1

      Indeed. I can definitely see the appeal of a van. I think one day I'll probably want to have that experience, just to know what it's like and truly compare to other approaches I've tried.

  • @Western-Wild

    Did the vans get scratched up on the way to the viewpoint? Or has the manzanita been cut back? We attempted it in the Tundra a few years ago and it was way too tight 😆

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  2 года назад +2

      The manzanita was less overgrown than the first time time I went up in the Subaru (May 2018 I believe) so it's definitely been cut back at some point, but it was still tight on us last month...I think there may have been a bit of scraping going on with the vans, and possibly even on my much narrower truck. Roaming central Oregon so much, I gave up worrying about pinstripes long ago and the sound doesn't even register anymore. :-)

    Hey Donald, what is your impression of the van interiors (the GMCs rather than Transit RV type) vs a truck camper?

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  2 года назад +1

      Well, the interior really depends on what one does with it. There's a lot of flexibility to how you build them out. Obviously with the more standard vans, you don't have the ability to stand up, but it's still an amazing space for most people's camping needs.
      If I were to live full time out of a van, I think I'd want the ability to stand up and walk around a bit. The difference between being inside Jason's van and being inside Meagan's van (with the high top) is pretty convincing to me. 🙂

    4x4 for that road?

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  6 месяцев назад

      Depending on the weather & time of year, much of this area _could_ probably be explored with 2WD. But many of these trails are unmaintained and erosion from the cycles of rain and snowmelt runoff can lead to deep ruts that could be problematic for a 2WD vehicle. Also, these are relatively high elevation trails (by Oregon standards) around 5,000' and much of the year there can be snow or - even worse - large patches of slushy rotten leftover snow lingering the shadows which can bring even my 4WD to a halt. The hill climb to the top of the butte we were on is quite steep and just loose dirt and probably inadvisable in 2WD.
      Checking out a lot of this area might be possible with 2WD, but I personally wouldn't poke around in here without the option to shift into 4WD or at least in an AWD vehicle (I have driven everything seen in this video in the Subaru Forester I had previously).
