Hey Wayne, I was sad to hear about Herschel's passing. I called Joyce and Lee to give me condolences. As you know, I m no Mando player but I have a brief but cool story that you and any Mando guys will appreciate. It happened in about 1998 and I took the banjo job w Junior Sisk and I drove to Roanoke. Herschel insisted that I come and spend the night w he and Joyce. I unloaded my banjo and guitar and my backpack into the guest room. Herschel then said "John boy, come into the living room I want to show you something". So help me, I walked into the living room and he had all 4 of his Loars on the couch! We sat up almost all night and he told me the story of each instrument and how he came to acquire each of them. I kept telling him, "Herschel, do you know how many Mando guys would give anything to be sitting here w you and these instruments right now ?" He humbly , in typical Herschel fashion said, " John boy, I consider you a friend and I knew you would would enjoy this". As you may or may not know, he never kept all his Loars in the same place at the same time. I really enjoyed playing w Herschel, Junior and various bass players in Ramblers Choice. As a matter of fact, I used to call his house my Roanoke headquarters. I thought you might appreciate that story. As an aside, I had gall bladder surgery the next year and Herschel called me in Nashville every morning at 10 am sharp to check on me. Herschel was a real friend.... especially to an old 5 man. Best, John Golden
Thx for sharing that story John. I think Herschel Sizemore was about as good as they come! Next time you can plz come and visit at a 3TO show pal. Miss you.....
So sorry to hear the news. He was my mandolin teacher when I lived in SW Virginia. He was definitely a master of his instrument...so fluid, precise, and simple with his approach. Such a kind and humble soul...RIP
Thank you for your tribute, Wayne. I knew I had to know him in my mando journey, but didn't discover his music until after his passing. Now I can't stop playing the Bounce Away record, it's great and inspirational.
Herschel was such a wonderful, sweet guy and one of the all-time mandolin greats. Thanks for doing this. Those are all great recordings. Check out this live recording with Herschel playing with Del and the Dixie pals: ruclips.net/video/GSntlq3cDqc/видео.html Particularly bittersweet since the recording also has Dick Smith (another phenomenal mandolin player who passed away this year) on banjo.
A wonderful tribute to Herschel. One of the greatest!

Thx for that comment Daryl! What an awsome blessing to take lessons from Herschel......
Awesome tribute Wayne! He truly was one of the best and such a nice guy. Loved his music. Thanks for discussing and sharing his legacy..
Thank you Wayne for such a touching and informative tribute. Don't doubt that your legacy will be any less than his.

Herschel really had the touch. I'll be releasing a video breaking down one of his tunes very soon.....
RIP Herschel
I'll sure miss him....
The opening brought me back to childhood. Used to go see the Cardinals whenever we could.
Me too Kevin! I miss those days.....
Well said.
I never heard much of his playing, except maybe with Del McCoury but I'll listen to him and hopefully pick up some links. Thank you!
Thx for that comment Mitzi! Good luck....

Thx for the comment John and sharing that link. Great stuff.....
On that solo, Herschel never seemed to move his position on the neck. Hand in one position the whole way through......! (or close by)
He was a true master. That lick he plays over the E chord in his solo in the bomb!
