  • Testing out the $300 gadget in this episode of The Kitchen Gadget Test Show is host Esther Choi of New York’s Mokbar, who is grilling chicken, hamburgers, and vegetable skewers. In some cases, the Philips Smokeless Indoor Grill comes through on its big promises. But if the best parts of grilling include being outdoors in the warmer months, hearing hamburgers sizzle, and getting to the perfect Maillard reaction - is this $300 kitchen gadget worth it?

    This is my second one. We have it outside the garage door exposed to the elements yearound ruclips.net/user/postUgkxreK_FUQ74_bylFqCr3y2MHqL3u78-b3r Direct sunlight deteriorated the plastic on the thermostat and severe winds blew the lid off. We found it about an acre away. I bought a new one and I saved the good parts from the old one as spares. Got about 8 years out of the first one.

    Here's my experience with indoor grills. You can either have one with fierce heat, which is going to give you good results, but will also fill your kitchen with all the smoke and smells of grilling, or you can have a "smokeless" grill, which means they keep the heat low. No smoke, but subpar results. I don't think it's possible to have both.

    • @AlanMolstad
      @AlanMolstad 2 года назад +1

      Ok,,,,ummm>>>
      I got to share something with you about how a person can get some great meats grilled, and not have any smoke.
      First...here at my house we mostly only use this same indoor grill to grill steak, and many of them are very thick.
      and frankly, this grill is far better than any other way to grill meats .....including anything you do outside.
      I think what is key is that the meat drips dont fall on anything that is hot...and thus you get a far better grilling experience.
      2nd...I live in northern North Dakota, and for about 6 months of the year its not safe to be outside standing around cooking, so this indoor grill is perfect.
      3rd.....I think that with this design you actually do have high heat temps, and little to no smoke.
      Remember the idea is to be "smokeless.. = ..smoke-less".
      The only smoke you see with this grill is from the meat itself, and its not from the most common source of smoke being the drips that might land on hot coals or some type of heated burner.
      4th....I wish the price was lower...I wish that so that guys who are not sure about this grill would have a chance to get it and see that what guys like me are saying about it are true.
      I wish you well my friend.
      If you have any questions, just ask!

      We have the very same one as shown in this video...
      Philips Smokeless Grill.
      Its really the only way to go as far as indoor grilling of meats.
      We had some thick pork chops the other week for a couple of meals.
      The first time my wife made them just on the stove in a pan ,.....what a let down!
      Then the next time we had the same type of pork chops I got the indoor grill going...The difference is like night and day!
      The meat was so good that I had to tell my wife- "You out did yourself again!"
      Meats made on this type of grill are way, way better than just dropping the slab of meat into a hot pan on the stove.

      Well...there is no fire with it...
      The thing that gets hot is way down inside it, so nothing really can catch fire.
      and the drips from the meat fall in the middle and so they dont even come close to the part that heats.
      So I cant think of any way for things to not be safe.
      The ONLY real issue I have had with it is.....its big.
      its not going to fit in most places in a normal kitchen.

    I have this and this cooks my steak very well. There is a reason why she did not hear that sizzle....as with any grill, the key is to let it PREHEAT. With this do it for about 10 mins or more. When you put your steak on the grill you will hear that sizzle and grill it as you always do. Steak comes out as if you were cooking on your outdoor grill. I use this during the winter time or when I just don't feel like using the outdoor grill.

    The grill works perfectly. So well in fact that I picked up a second one. They definitely sizzle if you let the grill heat up long enough. I have this grill because my apartment's stove vent is up so high on the ceiling that my fire alarm goes off if I try to pan-sear a steak. This lets me grill anything I want without the fear of terrorizing my neighbors with the smoke alarm. I've cooked shrimp, salmon, chicken, burgers, steaks, asparagus, corn on the cob, potatoes, and it's all turned out fabulously tasty! Sure, if you have a sweet BBQ grill on a deck in your backyard, there is no reason to have this, but if you live in an apartment and you love to grill food, there is absolutely nothing better.

I'd say it's *about* as good as propane, but it's way better than a grill pan I've had for a while. I'd say if you're stuck in a place where you can't really grill (I'm in an apartment with no terrace) and can get it for the right price, it'd pretty damn good. Pretty easy cleanup, though I've got a few specks on the side which are extremely resistant to scrubbing off.

The product also claims that fatter foods will still smoke but not as much as a traditional grill. This is a great electric IR grill. You did not follow instructions to get the best results.

    Couple of things.. 1) I own this grill.. it says let the grill preheat for at least 10 minutes before putting your food on.. I can assure you she didnt wait for the grill properly preheat first.. hence why there was no initial sizzling.. and ultimately why no great grill Marks either. With that being said.. it does seem to take longer than it typically would using another means of grilling.
    2) she said "her cooks" indicating she may own a restaurant or something... so you'd think she'd know to let the grill preheat.. but man did she look like a fish out of water trying to handle the tongs...

      are you deaf? because almost all of the audio in the video is uncut, even the part when she seasons the chicken and puts it on the grill, what makes you think she actually preheated? And this comes from the product QnA "Preheating your Philips grill will ensure that your food is being grilled in the shortest possible time for the best possible taste." and the manual even suggests to preheat it for atleast 8-10 minutes. There are many reviews with people who for instance, have preheated the grill such as Kelly's Ramblings which, surprise, it started sizzling right away when it first hit the grill.

    Great video! Thank you for reviewing this. Perhaps the burgers would get more "char" and better cooked texture with thinner patties? Anyone know?

    • @sanjayb933
      @sanjayb933 5 лет назад +1

      Yes thinner burgers for example frozen burgers (not the best) would have better results , I think if she left that thick burger on longer on each side and grill was pre heated for 10 then she would have seen the better results (I own this grill )

    • @CarlGeers
      @CarlGeers 2 года назад

      I own this grill as well and if you let the grill heat up it will definitely give you the mark char you want. It also helps to move the burger to a fresh part of the grill when you flip it.

      "Warm" - It's supposed to be used when you just want to keep something warm - I've found it's the perfect setting for when you want to inspect or flip your meat and don't want to go blind. (walk up to grill, turn to warm, look at meat or flip, move back to hot and walk off)

    • @sfisher973
      @sfisher973 5 лет назад

      ᙅYᙖᙓᖇ ᗪOᙅ™ uh the space it takes up is the same as two burners, front and back, on your range. Matter of fact that’s were I use it. I also use it fairly regularly for a lot of meats and vegetables. Oh and since apartments have electric ranges, trying to roast marshmallows on them becomes quite a mess. But here you lift off the grilling surface and if the marshmallow falls it lands on the always cool drip pan. BTW: they’ve introduced a rotisserie accessory for it as well.

    Do I “need” one? No. But as a gear junkie watching infrared cooking on RUclips, I can say I want one....badly!

  • @wentfishing
    @wentfishing 5 лет назад

    Ordered the same to use inside apartment. It is ok, but too slow cooking. To make food for 4 people took me more than hour. Also if your meat is marinated with oil it will burn a lot. Next time will use only dry seasoning. Salmon filet was very good. But I had to cover with large led due to oil from fish was all over.

  • @BenRangel

    Nothing will replace a BBQ but this is great for winter “grilling” and I have a kitchen in a house that for some stupid reason doesn’t have an exhaust pipe for the range fan/vent over the stove.... we have exhaust pipes that go through the ceiling and the roof for the vent fans in our bathrooms and laundry room but not over the friggin’ stove!!! 😡 Anyways, I just picked up a used one for $20. I think it’ll be worth it 😎
