I was introduced to Rich’s music by a dear friend circa 1991 when we were both in our mid-20s serving as missionary English teachers in Japan. She gave me an inestimable gift because Rich’s raw honesty about the loneliness inherent in being a Christian in a fallen world Spoke to me powerfully as an ex-patriate living halfway across the globe from everything that was familiar. I had been uprooted out of my complacent American Protestant Christian bubble and forced to ponder For the first time really what it meant to truly follow Christ and a very foreign circumstances. There is a hymn I want played at my funeral that always reminds me of Rich-“I’m but a stranger Here: Heaven is My Home.” That was Rich in a nutshell. He was gifted by God with a rare and unique talent and perceptiveness, and he had some success by the measure of the world, but he never got caught up in the trappings of contemporary Christian music stardom. He could’ve been a lot more successful materially and well known if he had chased being a brand N’s marketing himself- but he shunned the often shallow and materialistic values of the music industry, and in the 80s, when I went to college and first started listening to cc music, the lyrics of Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith for a package for the MTV generation has more style than substance… video friendly pop stars who were very image-conscious and bland. Rich rejected all of that and was gloriously himself, even if that meant being unkempt and outspoken. He didn’t have any time for BS or self promotion, and at the height of his musical fame, walked away from it to become a college student once more and pursue a degree in music education for children. I think he wrestled with some pretty dark personal demons that we can only guess at, but he was certainly not the mold of the successful upwardly mobile Christian that is promoted by our society. In many ways he lived an imitation of Christ, who was regarded as a scruffy ragamuffin living outside societal norms in his own time. Only God knows why he decided to take rich from us so soon. I was in Japan until just a year before riches death, and actually in those pre-Internet days, I didn’t find out he had died until some months after the fact. He died less than three weeks after princess Diana and the world was still so obsessed by her passing that which is was completely overlooked by main stream media. That was a bad crazy year, and those two deaths plunged me into an existential crisis that was tough to get over. I still don’t think I’m over it. Listening to riches music now is a mixed blessing because his messages as powerful as ever, but it’s very bitter sweet. When I first discovered his music, I was a young woman on the verge of a life of promise. 25 plus years on, I’m facing the disillusionment of middle age and mistakes and wandering far from my early sense of purpose. And my brother Rich is not here to guide and encourage me with new music, but he remains frozen in time for us. He is with the father and eternal joy, so it’s not him we should mourn; it’s our loss of him that cuts so deep. Three years after the accident, a friend and I saw Mitch McVicker perform a solo concert at a local church. He spoke about rich and admitted that he himself was still healing from his injuries of that day. What exactly happened is a mystery, as is the exact nature of the relationship between two guys separated by 20 years of age who were living together on a reservation. In the months before his death, which was studying to be confirmed in the Catholic Church and he was slated to do so just a few weeks after he died. His pain was very personal but as Christians walking through this world, we all have pain of some variety or other. I like this simple country cemetery which is the fitting resting place for a humble country troubadour poet of the word who really was anything but simple inside himself, but he never chased personal glory or a lifestyle of celebrity. I’m sure if he would have been able to make the choice himself, he would’ve chosen to be buried right here. Anyway all that is there is his cast off tent while his spirit Rejoices at the throne of the Lord. I look forward to meeting him one day as I could not do down here.
I saw Wayne play several times at very small intimate gatherings in various settings in central Indiana. We were at a small youth event together early one spring. I was sitting in a corner with my guitar and he came over to see what I was doing. He asked me to play something. I'm not especially talented musically, but I played one of my original songs. When I finished, his response was "I like it!" That was something coming from him!
I fully EXPECT RICH to be walking around Heaven barefoot with the KING OF KINGS, our Lord Jesus, Yeshua Hamashiach! So many of his SONGS 🎵 got me and my husband through really tough times over our 25 years marriage. My husband played Rich's cd's in his truck everytime we were going on a vacay or driving from Arkansas to Georgia for my husband's stage 4 cancer treatment. Keith is now with Rich and the millions and millions of other people who accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord & Savior. " If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus AND Believe in your heart God raised Him from the dead, YOU WILL BE SAVED." Roman's 10:9-10

I was in college when Mullins passed away. It was kind of a shock; we sung a bunch of his songs in Christian groups I was in

@@HistoricallyMarked Yes it is, but not as frequently. Many songs sung are 7-11 songs (same 7 words sung 11 times) and are all about “me.”
