I am fully convinced people just genuinely forget that Jack Black has incredibly solid acting chops in roles that *aren't* entirely comedic. He's a character actor, and a phenomenal one. Look at how well he handled the more emotional moments of something like Kung Fu Panda. The dude can ACT!
He is phenomenal in Peter Jackson's King Kong.
He is also great in a movie called 'Be Kind Rewind' - a movie with Mos Def.

The issue I had was that while he can act, he's one of those actors with their distinct voice. Its kinda hard not to hear "Jack Black" regardless of how emotional or talented he is with that voice. That's why I sit back in predictions, trying to hear a few clips, pair it with Bowser, and then just shake my head. But in execution? That first command boom was 100% perfect. I'd have to say if I were guessing its the same gruff voice he's used without words in many other games. His next lines had more of JB's voice in it, but still with another trace of that barking first command, and somewhere the two meet and you kinda go... "Yeah, that's perfect for what he sounds like when he's not yelling"
I always knew he was a good actor, I’m just surprised by how flexible of a voice actor he is. If I didn’t already know, I wouldn’t have realized that Jack Black even voiced Bowser, and that’s when I would say celebrity voices are best used.
The penguin race being in the movie tells me one big thing: They're trusting the audience largely understands what Mario is and don't need to dumb it down to just the Mushroom Kingdom. Thank GOD. Sonic was literally just Sonic and Eggman until the sequel, where we got way more locales inspired by the game. Seems like the same thing will happen here.

No, that is more or less what that film was. A much better version of it, but basically that.
At the same time, if they trust the audience to know (or be willing to buy in) enough about this world to get that, why do we need to make it the 'Mario portalled in from something comparable to our world' style origin story they seem to be doing based on the teaser? I'm just not sure why you'd do that while also trusting the audience to be willing to buy into "Bowser attacks a kingdom inhabited by Penguins" (Plus... Why do we need an origin story for Mario in 2023?) - And the fact that's the only thing I have to complain about with this teaser is a very strong sign.

Let's also give a round of applause to the legendary Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. Normally a guy known for his distinct bassy voice, he made that line in the trailer sell something completely unique. The man is a wunderkind.
Absolutely. That voice is exactly what I'd expect Kamek to sound like and it's fabulous
Yeah I think Kameks delivery was perfect, the little emotional rise from the line Koopas really sells their intimidation and power. On the other hand Jack Black doesn't exactly have an imposing or domineering sounding voice. There's a bit of this naïve goofiness to it that maybe pays off in the film later on but in so far as the trailer in a vacuum I think it misses the tonal mark.

The trailer is so beautifully animated. So colorful and the lighting is just great. The voices are pretty good too especially bowser. I wasn’t sure how jack black as bowser would go but it was a really good decision actually
It's funny, I was expecting Jack Black just Jack Black-ing it up but he did like, an actual Bowser voice, it's great.
People are making a big stink about Chris Pratt's Mario voice and I can understand but I'm gonna reserve full judgment until we hear more, he literally had two lines so I'll just wait and see.

Jack Black is a brilliant voice actor. I can actually hear him throwing a little bit of Ian McShane into his performance -- taking cues from Tai Lung. At least, that's my interpretation.

He's definitely not going for a 'literally from Italy stereotypically Italian' Charles Martinet accent, it almost sounds like a mildly New York Italian accent. Like the goofy old 90's Mario cartoon type of accent. The very first line is literally just Chris Prat talking, but I hear a touch of it in the second line. Could be terrible. But like you said, let's wait till we get a little more of him talking to see what we are working

When illumination was announced I was worried the animation was going to look kinda cheap but the animation looks amazing I’m really pleasantly surprised. And also jack blacks bowser is perfect.
When illumination tries they’re perfectly capable of making some nice looking things, it’s just usually they don’t have to try very much.
Illumination probably realised that the internet would never forgive them if they fucked this up, so they put their all into it.
I mean, yeah Illumination is cheap but Nintendo is also behind this project, so they might be pushing Illumination for the best movie they can come up with, both visually and story-wise.
Illumination definitely has some talented people in their animation team, and you can see it shine through occasionally. But it usually goes to waste on most of their movies.
@@jamesrussels7766 Yep when they can reuse Minions assets over, and over again, and know they will get a fan based to watch it either at the movie theater, DVD/Blu-Ray, or on Peacock without even trying hard, then I can't blame them for doing the bare minimum, but yeah they knew if they screwed up Mario there would be hell to pay not only from Nintendo, but one of the biggest fan bases in human history.
I kinda dig Jack Blacks current performance as Bowser. When people online animate Mario characters over skits and stuff, it gives the characters so much life than they have in the games. The amount of Charlie day and Seth Rogan related Mario animations last year further cemented that. I kinda get the same energy with Jack’s bowser, especially with how fluid and well animated he is.
Seth rogen seemed like a bad casting choice until I saw those animations and it just works perfectly! Charlie day even more
This has incredible animation. Not quite hooked on Chris Pratt still but Charlie Day and Jack Black will carry. I'm excited!
He seems to be trying to channel Lou Albano's portrayal, though slightly toned down.

Chris Meledandri’s comment on how they proposed the film 7 years ago reminded me how Pikmin 4 was “almost finished” 7 years ago. Funny to think the Mario Movie and Pikmin 4 have both been in development hell at the same time, and are now releasing in the same year.
The Mario movie wasn't in development hell, what the fuck are you talkinng about. This is a time for a movie, movies are announced before they even begin pre-production.

I think we can all agree that this trailer/movie is much better than we expected. Also, that Jack Black is an amazing Bowser.
Even if the movie flops, which it looks like it won't, I'll still be impressed with how well they translated Mario logic to a movie.

I really don’t like Illumination (every one of their movies I’ve watched just lack that substance and punch that Pixar movies and to an extent Dreamworks movies have) and was disappointed to hear they were chosen for this film a few years ago. But man, this trailer is so encouraging and gives me hope. Maybe Nintendo will actually make sure that talent at Illumination gets used properly?
When this hits as hard as it should, the door is open for Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong and more. Illumination has their own cinematic universe at hand when done right.
And they'll all be pretty well cast except for the titular character. Michael Cera as Link here we come!
How do you do a cinematic universe where Zelda is connected to Mario? Donkey Kong and Mario is the only thing that could work and still have a good story

That's a big brain move for Bowser.
To me everything except for mario was amazing. The animation is phenomenal, the voices for kamek, bowser and toad sound really good. The only iffy thing to me is mario's voice. Hopefully it sounds better in other scenes but didn't sound very fitting in this trailer, every thing else got me genuinely excited.

I'm not 100% sure about Mario's voice, but we only got two lines and one of them was pretty much whispering, so who knows maybe it'll be really good in the final movie. Everything else in the trailer is just perfect though. Illumination has some seriously under-utilized talent.
This is what Illumination is capable of when they're not trying to crank out an entire feature length animated film in the span of 6 months, and honestly I'm really excited!

I was absolutely blown away by this trailer. I have been so scared for such a long time, but this trailer on top of the poster has brought a huge sigh of relief, and I cannot wait to watch the entire thing!
According to Charles Martinet, the Mario voice is very straining, I can tell Pratt has the same "beat" as Mario, but it's not as high (probably because it's too straining)
Also, I cracked up with the penguins. Haven't seen them since Mario 64 BECAUSE BOWSER WHIPPED THEM ALL OUT LOL

You've been doing the SAME voice for nearly **40 years** just like it's a little hard for Tom Kenny with SpongeBob's laugh for 20 years.
He's probably good with doing short one liners like he always did in the years, but doing the same voice for a film is WAY different then just saying, "yippee", "wahoo", "here we go!", grunts, and various jumping noises for a few times. He is talented but it's fine if a full length film seemed a bit taxing for him.
I love how Arlo is like "who are you gonna find that doesn't love Mario" whereas for the Sonic movie he's like "nobody involved has played a Sonic game". I say this unironically. Almost all my friends grew up with Mario, but I don't think I know anyone IRL who grew up with Sonic.
I grew up with Sonic but prefer Mario nowadays
Which was wrong to begin with since Sonic's redesigned model was handled by Tyson Hesse and the first movie was directed by Tim Miller who had directed Sonic cinematics for many years.

Bowser being portrayed as an actual threat and not being the butt of a joke was something I was least expecting. I know it’s a movie targeted towards kids, but the stakes are actually high; I like that.
Well if it's geared towards today's kids I really don't expect much. Either way it's nice to see Nintendo's flagship get a movie.

Jack Black and all the penguin dudes are killing it, but I have a hard time accepting anyone but Charles Martinet as Mario.
I grew up on Lou Albano's version from the "Super Mario Bros. Super Show" so this reminds me of that.

I had VERY low expectations for Pratt, and he is somehow far worse than I expected. Truly awful, I think a random dude off the street could do a better Mario.

I think it's because he's literally the only thing in the trailer that doesn't work 100 percent. Everything else is either perfect or works well enough to be happy with. Chris's take on Mario is just so off from game Mario so it's a big jarring.

This movie legitimately looks kinda good to be honest, like, i am watching it as soon as it comes out.
Yeah, I never understood the people who tried to throw it under the bus immediately. The cast has great actors and comedians. As long as they don’t rush it (which it doesn’t look like they have) it’s probably going to be great.
The animation honestly kinda gives Poxar a run for its money even. Like, it's not just genuinely good and beautiful to look at, but it perfectly translates the games graphics and asthetic to a movie animation style. I like the weight everything seems to have. And yes, Jack Black as Bowser is a total home run. Both its own version while still clearly being inspired and directed by his past voices.

I told others who were worried about the film that Nintendo is VERY attentive to details. They're the same people who talked to DISNEY about how Bowser **held** his cup in that one group scene in Wreck-It-Ralph.
They pushed illumination to it's full potential and if they studio keeps it up might get out of mediocre/average town

I love everything from this trailer. I feel like I can’t really judge Mario’s voice yet since I just heard like a snippet of it. I’m sure Chris Pratt’s voice in the next trailer will be given more time.
The animation is spot on, the cast is 100% great as Jack Black sounds great as Bowser can't wait for it

I think this is the best trailer I've seen out of illumination in like 10 years. Clearly people who care about Mario are working on this. The poster gave me a lot of hope with the amount of detail in it too.
Now THIS is (one of a few) reactions I was waiting for. This movie looks like it could be awesome to me.

They probably did, they helped with the designs and the overall landscape. I'm sure they knocked this on out of the ballpark.

@@ausgod538 They could’ve easily crafted 3D references for Illumination to use for the landscapes and such. I’d honestly be surprised if Nintendo didn’t help with the animation at all, considering the sheer amount of 3D people Nintendo has and could spare for making this movie the best it could be. An awful lot to live up to when the last Mario movie was what it was.
I wasn’t on board with Mario Pratt, but after watching about 10 reactions to the trailer, I’m getting used to it. In the theater, I’m sure it will seem normal after a bit
I like Chris's voice, it has that kinda Brooklyn accent and considering Mario will likely start in New Donk city ( at least in my theories ) it really makes sense, and I'm really excited!

Yeah, honestly I kinda figured that they'd prefer moving away from a cartoony stereotypical italian accent for a movie heavier on dialogues than the games. They want Mario to be a more sensical established character for his movie debut and I understand that for sure...
It still feels super weird not hearing Charles Martinet's voice coming out of his mouth considering I've heard it since I was like 4-5 years' old, though. I need some time to get used to it.
I admit I kinda wished he said "Here we go!" instead of "Here we come!" at the end. Just giving little nods to Mario's iconic one-liners would make the transition a bit easier.

Bowser is so expressive in this! I was scared it was going to be like every other Videogame adaptation where the characters have 0 personality. This is beautiful.
I thought Illumination would kind of phone it in you know. But honestly? I'm really digging the animation work. Especially the Lava/Ice scene at the beginning. Gorgeous.
Didn’t expect the opening of trailer to go that hard.
I'm here for it. It's sad that it won't be a holiday 2022 release since I think it would have been an amazing addition to my holidays but a spring release is fine.
Bowser really is good. I still hear a bit of JB in the voice, but marred with that barking command, it set me up to say: Yeah, that's what he'd sound like when he's not yelling. Its great! Toad I didn't even think about it until later, and rewatched it, but there's something perfect about that. Its not 1:1 with the game, but close enough and right on the tone and animation, that I just go with it without even double checking who that's supposed to be. That's great immersion, and flawless. Mario? Well... its not the worst case scenario, I'll give it that. I still don't fully see it either though. With his last statement, he sounded a bit more like he was running a much milder variant of the brooklyn accent guy in older media. I love his apparent enthusiasm for the role, but I can't fully see it yet. Still, maybe I'll be proven wrong in further trailers.
It is *definitely* an illumination movie, but Nintendo has clearly done their best to add that classic Nintendo charm to it, so that’s good at least!

In all honesty, this movie is beautifully animated and the attention to detail is amazing. Especially with the many references to older Mario media such as The Penguins from SM64. I am already a huge fan of Jack Black's Bowser and Mario Chris Pratt is okay. As a lifelong Mario fan I cannot express how happy I am to see it and can't wait to go watch it dressed just like the plumber himself.
I'm so glad that Pablo the Penguin from The Backyardigans was able to make an appearance in The Super Mario Bros. Movie!
I just love that Charles Martinet is on the cast list. He deserves to be a part of this in some way. One of the nicest guys out there.
Everyone’s voice acting sounds so good and Chris Pratt just sticks out as painfully average. I think sometimes celebrities forget that part of voice acting is, well “acting”. The industry should be trying to pick out more people who have actually practiced the craft. Anyways, visuals are great, Keegan Michael Key and Jack Black sound amazing, and who is voicing Kamek?! They sound pretty great too!

Jack Black as Bowser is great, but I don't think enough people are talking about Key's Toad. I think it strikes a really nice balance between an actual voice and the screeching madness of the in-game Toads. That really surprised me.
Yeah, I love how he hits the same kind of vocal tone as the game Toads while also being able to talk more normally
I was expecting Keegan Michael Key's normal speaking voice but was pleasantly surprised.
Chris Pratt said he loved to stomp Koopas in the original Mario Brothers arcade game but there were no Koopas in the arcade game there were Shellcreepers in it. You also could not stomp on the Shellcreepers, you had to hit the platform they were on from below and then kick them. Really makes you wonder if Chris Pratt is a real Mario fan. But this movie actually looks good.

I hope that Bowser will be equal parts threatening and has a similar personality to the Bowser from the Mario and Luigi games. I think that would be awesome.

Exactly! I knew that Chris could not pull off the stereotypical Italian accent, so I figured that they would give Mario a Brooklyn accent. I was hoping that they would go this route because it reminds me of the Mario from the Super Show cartoons, which I loved as a kid. I’m so happy 😁
I was pleasantly surprised. The movie has great animation, and I love Jack Black's Bowser voice.
They definitely put more effort than illumination ever has into the worlds and backgrounds, so hopefully that carries over into other aspects like the writing. It's also seemingly trying very hard to push back against the perceived kiddyness of Mario and/or video games in general, which might give a chance for that DK fart joke prediction of yours to be incorrect.
I need more clips of Pratt Mario to hear more of that voice.
I cannot believe we're actually going to get a high budget Mario Movie that genuinely looks like a legitimate attempt at a proper Mario Movie, I'm so happy.

I'm super excited for this. A lot of people have been saying Mario is weird, being Chris Pratt. But I disgare. Pratt does really well as Mario. The designs look great, I know for sure I am Going to watch this movie opening day.
What about Chris Pratt Mario works for you? Just seems like a glaring mismatch to me. Seems like he's not putting much effort into changing his voice like the other VAs
@@jacobp249 I don't think, personally, he needs to. Yeah, it's Mario. It is weird that Mario doesn't speak in an Italian accent here. But if Pratt tried an accent like that, it may come off very weird. If he tried just a slight accent, I'm sure many would just say he's not trying hard enough. It's a lose lose situation. Either way it doesn't really work, but honestly to me I dont really want Mario speaking in an Italian accent the whole time. It'd be more jarring to me than if Pratt just voice acted as normal. Thats just how I feel though. I see many people talking about how Mario doesn't have an accent, just an accent. But they care not, at all, that bowser is now speaking full sentences. Only one person I've talked to seems to care that toad wasn't AS grating as usual, and even then they realized that would be super annoying over the course of a full movie. A lot of people are hyper focused on Mario's voice, yet let everything else slide. Not to say that you are hyper focused on this, I am just bringing that up for my opinion's sake.

What? Dude, we aren't hyper focused on Mario and ignoring everything else. I think Bowser is amazing and am used to him talking in full sentences, he does this in pretty much every Mario game so I don't know what you're point is here. Toad has a rasp to his voice that has that original Toad voice feel without being annoying, I unironically think his voice actor found a perfect balance for a Toad voice. We aren't against their voices changing, we just think Chris Pratt specifically does not fit Mario. Everyone else fits. There is no conspiracy where we're ignoring those other two voice actors. Unlike Mario, we think they are both great cast picks.

2.) No, bowser doesn't normally speak in full sentences. The only instance of him doing so in a game is sunshine. Text boxes do not count, the character may be speaking in the game, but not in the universe.the sounds bowser makes aren't speech most often. Yes he has made little utterances, like in odyssey where he said "Mario," and "peach," but never full sentences.

Just to inform, Mario's original voice was a guy with a New York accent not a stereotypical high-pitched Italian man, the Italian accent came after but that accent was only designed for video game sound effects and to appeal to kids, not for movies and shows, that's why Mario doesn't have dialogue in the games, And that's why their old shows and movie had him having a New York accent, so it's not that far fetched Mario having a brooklyn accent which you can hear on Marios last line. if people understood that they would be more ease of mind

The first gig Charles Martinet had as Mario was in 1990 as a facial capture animated Mario on a TV that people went up and talked to. So he originally voiced him to have full improvised conversations with people, not just do game sound effects which didn't happen until many years later. Not saying you're wrong. I do agree it would be weird to have a whole movie with Mario talking just like that for a couple hours of full dialogue, but Martinet did use the voice for more than just quick soundbytes.
It's the only film from Illumination I LEGIT want to see!!!

Chris Pratt said he spent hours of his life stomping Koopas in the original Mario Bros arcade game. You'd think after all these hours he would notice that you die if you try to stomp on them in that game.
I guess because of Nintendo's involvement, and the fact that the film is guaranteed huge success, Illumination is giving it a lot more money and time than their other films. The animation quality is far above their usual standard and looks really good, I can't believe that I'm actually optimistic about an Illumination film, but here I am looking forward to release.

I love the chris pratt voice, it resembles some old memories of the older shows that have mario with a brooklyn accent. The voice fits mario surprisingly. I love it, I give an applause to chris pratt and can’t wait to see the movie. Jack black does steal the spotlight tho. 😅
I was super nervous when I hear Illumination was working on this, but I felt hopeful when the poster dropped yesterday, and this trailer completely sold me. I’m so damn excited for this! Not just for an epic long over due Mario movie, but for the prospect this opens for the future as far as other IP’s cinematic future, and merchandise! Think of all the giant inflatable holiday themed Toads!
Dude if Illumination nails this, this could be a game changer for animated movies. If this succeeds well, I can see Illumination spearheading the Nintendo Cinematic Universe. Disney should be scared. This looks incredible. I am fully aboard the hype train and cannot wait.

I always forget there were just straight up turtles/koopas in the original Mario Bros. I grew up with the GBA version where it's Spinies.
It just occurred to me, but the "Explorer" Toad might be the beginnings of Captain Toad before he was known as Captain.
Jack Black is actually trying to switch things up a bit, but Chris Pratt....well.....
The fact that the absolute Legend Koji Kondo is working on the score for this movie makes me actually hopeful that this won't be a slogfest music wise.

I've been saying this exact same thing for months now, ever since the casting of this movie got announced, and the entire internet had their ridculous, exaggerated "lmAo OMfGz" reaction; that as soon as the trailer comes out, everyone will simultaneously drop their convenient amnesia about what "voice acting" is and will have the most freaking predictably milquetoast "this actually doesn't look bad" reaction in the world, born out of everyone subconsciously knowing that their initial reaction was a bit of a ridiculous judgemental meme-y mess; and look what happened.
to be fair i think most of the negative reaction was towards chris pratt and seth rogen. illumination has a bit of a reputation for making mediocre movies at this point, so its understandable the internet would respond with a massive "wtf" when all put together.
Man, Chris Pratt sure was... super GENUINE in his segment before the trailer. I DEFINITELY believe he played Mario as a youth and 100% cares about playing the character.

I agree. I feel this movie Mario is different enough from the game Mario, that hearing Chris Pratt's voice is not as jarring or uncanny as I expected it to be.
He also puts on an accent on the "Mushroom Kingdom here we come" line
Now all I can think of is Mario shouting "Brooklyn Rage!!!"
