After watching this video review more than one time I took decision to have one. So, since Aug 2016 I am driving a 7 seats, 2.0 diesel 180 HP, AWD, automatic gear S-Max. As the review was helping me a lot to decide, is my time to give my feedback after driving approx 8000 km (5000 miles). Thumb up highlights: The biggest plus is comfort. Space, noise, smooth passing on road bumps all are outstanding. Nice seats, good position while driving makes the long trips less Also, I got the Sync 3 audio system which is the best I ever met (also the issue with the small buttons of sync 2 looks to be solved). For the size of the car, it give a nice response when you hit the gas, specially when the gear is on "S" position Thumb down highlights: The steel on the doors is really thin. You will always see any small door-to-door contact from the supermarket parking. There is no possibility to manually close any of the air vents on the dash board. Fuel consumption is quite high 7.8 l/100 km (37 mpg) is one of the biggest consumption I have experienced with the cars i was driving. This is an average consumption with 75% of road driving and 25% city traffic. Small failures of the LED lights while temperature is bellow 0C and is raining. Probably the control camera gets some ice and was disturbed. Washing and wiping system is quite weak. I need to stop every 100 km to clean my windshield in a morning with wet road but no rain. The owner manual is absolutely terrible. With more than 500 pages, information repeated for the 3rd or fourth time, but I could not find where is placed the tool box and I had to ask someone. Summary: Excellent car. I would get it again if I would have the chance. This is not an expert opinion! I am just a normal but experienced user. I hope my comment helps.
Stop every 100km? Have them adjusted. Or do it yourself. Get a sewing needle, put in holes to get grip and adjust direction so that spray is on different part of windscreen. If properly directed, can spray at low speed and high speed on windscreen.
Thanks Thomas. A very informative review and your style and attention to detail makes a treat. While going through multiple reviews, yours came across as the best balanced and "non-sales" driven.
Same tought here, bought the skoda suberb sportline 280PK sort of based on a review here. Now i have to buy a compagny car... So i check here.... I trust him. I liked ford but after this review, fuck them...
Great work! Your reviews are the most detailed in the net. So German, so European, so calm, its the way it has to be. Makes me relaxed to watch it. side note: a 720p24 option would be nice, because some mobile devices may be too slow for 720p50, and it gives an artificial look anyway I think.
Péter Sági thank you so much for your appreciation. I hope you keep on thumbing up and commenting :-) Hmmm youtube offers the formats automatically .. we film in 1080p50 and then lower options are offered by the system, nothing we can do personally about that!
At the mo I am driving my SMAX first generation... The end of July I am collecting my ordered Mondeo MK5 Titanium... After this review... I know I will miss SMAX :D
Hi just 24 hours ago I picked up the new Ford S-Max Titanium sport 180PS model and it's a very quick car you get such pulling power from 2nd gear its just amazing you can feel the 295 F/Pounds or 400Nm low down in the rev range it's a step up from the previous generation S-max it's a absolute pleasure to drive and would ask anyone thinking about getting one then please do you won't be sorry.
Hey, I really love the review, but I have one comment about it. The trunk opening, you shouldn't move your foot all around under there, just one easy kick, like kicking a ball, trust the car, and it will work much better that way. For me on the Kuga, it worked every time with the easy kick, while my mother used the method you used, and she always complained about the feature not working. Anyways, keep up the good work! :)
You said that the materials on the dashboard are cheap, but I don't agree with that. This matt plastics looks much better than "piano black". Ther's no fingerprints and dust on it.
I Love ur Vids i have now Just ordered a New S Max Titainiun Sport in White Great look at the s max and i made my mind up after seeing this Video. Keep up the Good work :)
Thomas, what is your personal opinion, which is better, VW Sharan or Ford S-Max? A car for family of 5, two adults and 3 kids, 1 - 4 years old. Both parents use Apple car play & Android auto, towing hook and 7 seats.
My dad has an first generation S-Max with the 2.5T ST-engine, and it is really fun to drive. This seems to have gone a bit soft compared to the old one.
In England it tends to get called either "people carrier" or "MPV" (multi purpose vehicle)..... but all cars are people carriers, just that some can carry more people than others! Whatever, the new S-Max is still not as versatile as my 2001 Galaxy that I am about to sell. That can hold 7 full-sized adults, and all 5 rear seats can be removed to leave me with a stylish 2-seater Transit van. Now my children have left home I don't need such a large car so I am down-sizing to a C-Max
Thanks I'm not sure if its using the upcoming latest sync system sync 3.0 i think it will be coming out starting in 2016 vehicles . Flat look ,cleaner more responsive MMI . Ford probably could use the bonded carbon fiber to high strength steel or aluminum structure so that the forward roof could be cleaner without support structure ( windshield/screen ). S-max not sold in US as of yet and they do not offer diesel here. Maybe in the future. Van's here in US have been slow sellers as opposed to SUV's. Interesting Vehicle but seems like a mix of features thrown together some work some do not. Thanks for the review Joe
Great review. Really usefull. As S-Max Mk1 owner I wanted to see all highlights of the new model before planned "upgrade" . I agree that materials could be better - but it is nothing new in Ford. I'm wondering if that sophisticated system changing driving wheel experience can be disabled? In my current S-Max, steering is very precise and gives feeling of great controll. I woudn't like to loose it in Mk2...
jagdpanzer911 Thanks! Actually there is this optional new steering available, you should check that out before you buy one if you want to have the classic steering or the new electronic one
Excelent review as allways. When are You going to make a full review of the Renault Espace? And can even compare it to the S-Max. They are diferent from the others family cars, só do they stand to the risos?
1. Great video as usual 2. This GPS system looks very oldschool and slow for a model in 2016. 3. The speed sign recognition works only by what the camera sees if i have not purchased the GPS extra item?
Great car reviews. Thomas provides a lot of important detail. Can anyone help. I'm currently on my 2nd BMW 520d tourer which has now just reached 3 yrs old. The car is running very well but intend to make a change in 6 months time. I need a lifestyle vehicle as cycle, ski etc & fancy something different. Im looking at top of range VW Touran r-Line, Ford S Max Vignale or Renault Espace Initiale. I will only buy nearly new as those cars appear to depreciate a lot from list price. All 3 cars fit the purpose..what do you think is best???

The french have their interiors much better tought out. The Ford for instance has not even an extra mirror to keep an eye on the 2nd and 3rd row. A very strange omission for a family car. Like you say in your review. The design limits the view you have over the body. This is a big car and moving around town you need to stay aware of that. Trunk/boot space is exceptional though. We can comfortably fit our family of 5, a mother-in-law plus luggage for a week away. I do currently own one of these and I am planning to buy a new car this year. Although I am really happy with the s-max overall I am not sure I will buy another one. For day to day use in the city I feel it is just too big and too bulky.

update. Bought the smax based on your review and the initial ride is great.

The best video on the ford s Max .Good detail on every thing in and out of it.

After this review... I know I will miss SMAX :D
Cool review, like how you go into detail and describe everything!!
thanks spread the word :)
Great review - the most detailed that I have seen for the S-Max.
Vielen Dank :)
Hi just 24 hours ago I picked up the new Ford S-Max
Titanium sport 180PS model and it's a very quick car you get such
pulling power from 2nd gear its just amazing you can feel the 295
F/Pounds or 400Nm low down in the rev range it's a step up from the
previous generation S-max it's a absolute pleasure to drive and would
ask anyone thinking about getting one then please do you won't be
sorry.
:-) Nice touch with the kids. Quite unexpected. Fantastic review once again.
uinteresting thanks =) Yeah that was fun :>
Very good detail and scenic review!! Loving it
+Tse Jeff thanks !!
When the backseats have the headrests pulled up, then flipping the seats down with the buttons doesn't work. Other brands do support this.
Thank you for a very good review Thomas. I am still undecided between this and the Galaxy however.
Cheers! They are close indeed
Brilliant review. Thanks so much keep up the good work.
Thank's for the test. Your vids really help me find the best car for my family.
+Gyula Lohr glad we could help !
A charming presenter gives a very relaxed feel to this video making it easy and enjoyable to weigh the pros and cons.

Two comments, it has a spare tire under the car and there also is a mirror for looking at your kids just above the sunglass container.
You said that the materials on the dashboard are cheap,

Another very good review... but does this minivan come with a spare wheel/tyre?
Christopher Martin Thanks! Hmm I dont think so. Funny btw that you call it Minivan, in Germany its rather maxi-van :)

TechExplorer Hey Joe! Nah thats sync 2.0. Looking forward to the new system, sounds promising. Totally agree with the forward roof structure!
The quality of previous model was better specially for used material inside the car.
Too many complaints? Is there any good things about this new S-max?? I'm kind of disappointed as I like it very much.
How is the petrol 2.0 engine with 240hp.

Excelent review as allways. When are You going to make a full review of the Renault Espace? And can even compare it to the S-Max. They are diferent from the others family cars, só do they stand to the risos?
Pedro Casal Hey! All-new Renault Espace is coming up by mid-June! :)
***** thank you, waiting for it anxiously, take your time.
Pedro Casal appreciated!
really good review. well done
1. Great video as usual
2. This GPS system looks very oldschool and slow for a model in 2016.
3. The speed sign recognition works only by what the camera sees if i have not purchased the GPS extra item?
+cintula82 thanks ! The Speed sign recognition is usually a mix of camera and gps data. It should be included in the top trim level gps
Loads of info here- thanks! Would have been nice to see you using the electronic hand brake. I'm wondering how you'd do hill starts..
+Mark Snowden Thanks! Those electronic hand brakes lift automatically when you accelerate - helps at hill starts.

Hi. That's a very good review of the SMAX. Is it availble in german too?
+Stephan Radl thx! No we have international audience but try to speak an understandable english
i like cars that have this far and flat windscreen, feels roomy in the interior :D
Hi Thomas, could you also tell us, where the video has been made?
Łukasz Mrowiński Hey Lukasz, sure, that was in beautiful Majorca!
***** Thanks a lot, I saw also the names Badia Gran and Badia Blava on the navigation screen inside the car :)
Hard to pick a car but I think that I will probably go for S-MAX too :-)
I have an option to pick either:
allhambra (I dont like the look that much, but it would be bigger option) - maybe just a little bit more expensive - 1000 EUR with petrol instead of diesel
S-MAX (diesel)
Touran (petrol instead of diesel but 3500 EUR cheaper)
Citroen C4 grand spacetourer (petrol instead of diesel 5000 EUR cheaper)
all have same fuel consumption based on real life tests (except allhambra - it will have higher fuel consumption with this engine)
all have basically same specs and features. (basically every assistant which they offer, automatic parking, adaptive led lights or bi-xenon)

good review
excellent review, can you also kindly do a comparison with BMW Gran Tourer. Thanks
Aseem Gaur Hey Aseem, thanks for your approval! We ll try to get a Gran Tourer for later this year.
very good info. thanks

Daniel Roos Thanks for that extensive feedback!
+Daniel Roos yes it does... it flips down from the sunglasses holder.
i still do like the outgoing s max,,,its more aggressive looking.
I agree. Just bought an MK3 but I prefer the facelift model for styling. It's looks more sporty and more agile. The MK3 looks more bulky.
Inside as well the facelift feels roomier.
However I must admit the new MK3 is overall a much better car.
One thing that really bugged me on the facelift is at the front there's no decent storage for your mobile or pretty much any storage. In the new one you are spoilt for choice and in such a car practicality is vital.
It this summer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

renault espace is so much better car.
Why?
Stop calling it a van....vans are different.....it's an mpv....
In Germany, we call everything a van with isnt a normal car or a SUV :D
