One Scottish soldier wrote the song, Loch Lomond to his sweetheart during the army's retreat from the English in 1745.
Today, the song touches the heart of all who hear it, but while many know the song, few know the true story behind it.

I'm Chinese but this song is one of my life's favorite, so touching!
i am a HUGE fan of Scotland...i live in a place known as Scotland USA...we have the Highland Festival every year and i just can't get enough!! i absolutly love Loch Lomond...the song...everything behind it...everything!! it's actually the first song i learned to play on my violin! lol
I'm brazilian. I don't know much about scotland, but this legend is absolutely charming. in fact, if i die abroad, i think my soul will take the low road and i'll be in brazil before all of ye.
The 1745 war was NOT an English/Scottish war, it was a war between the Jacobites and the British government forces, Scotland and England both had Loyalists and Jacobites.
Nice job brother 👍
wish there were more parts to this..part 2 and 3 etc etc, but im very glad ye put this up here, suppose its just one of those days i miss home very much..thanks a ton for it
I cant wait to get back to Loch Lomond again! favorite place in the world!
I've been away from home for a little over 2 years now... travelling around the rest of the world, but no matter how collossal or scenic the sights I collected, none of them will truly ever raise to the beautiful and raw beauty of Scotland.
O' ah'm comin' hame soon, and tae that ah'll raise a cup!
I’ve been there many times when I lived in northern England. My favorite place on earth!
@LadyShesu . This is a clip of a short film made to commemorate the opening of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National park. It played in the Imax cinema that was in the visitors center near Balloch. This is now an aquarium. You might get a DVD from there.
I can't wait to see Loch Lomond! That's my ancestral home, near Arrochar, at the head of Loch Long and the land between Loch Long & Loch Lomond. I am descended from Clan McFarlane.
Loch Sloy, MacFarlane. I'm also from Clan MacFarlane.
The Mc Pharlanes or Mc Farlanes are an old Irish Tribe/clan (Scotti) that invaded Scotland giving the country its name, they set up home around Loch Lomond.
This was a very interesting story behind the music and lyrics. Sometimes the story is as compelling as the music itself. Thanks for posting this portion......
Who are the ladies singing in this video? Beautiful!!
The story goes, two captured Scots were in prison in England. They were told only one of them could live and be set free. While one was asleep the other wrote this song (a poem at the time) and left it for them, he went and told the guards that he would die.
The "high road" is the real road back to Scotland
the "low road" is the path of the spirits (as he would be dead).
From Chile.... I am Teacher of Elemental Education in a small Comune called Contulmo near the Lanalhue Lake....our landscapes are ncredible similar to Loch Lomond !!!!!! ... With 8th Basic Grade, we studied about this Beautiful Legend ....Very Thanks for the excellent explanation about this sad and terrible story ... Now, I can better understand the idea of the chorus of wonderful song...a Special Grreting and Blessings to all People that say .....Alba gu brah.......saying NOO!!!!!
And here friends, I'm in England and the song just gets to me whenever I listen to it, Kirsty's version especially :D
One of the things that make me happy to live in West Dumbartonshire is Loch Lomand. if anybody ever visits the small area of Dumbartonshire you should check out Lomand Shores, a good tourist spot.
Wish it didn't cut out when it does...looked really good!
I saw this in Glasgow Science Centre some years ago. and loved it!
I don't know if it's just me but I think these women sing the song perfectly.
thats soooooo cold. such a cliff hander.
i was actually really looking forward to cramming the entire story of loch lomond in 5.46 but alas. . . it was to no avail.
We Tool this Road this year ❤
Wonderful places... One day...If God wishes...we´ll be here...
Alejandro Castro Thanks for watching! Subscribe for more high quality videos from Janson Media! bit.ly/JansonRUclips
dying to see this movie :(
I've tried watching this on Hulu and a few other online sites, but my provider and my computer are conspiring against me. Aaagh!! I have it for sale at Amazon.com. Looking for other sources. But glad to know it's available. Thanks for sharing this much of it.
Yeah where is the rest of it!!!
Before the last ice age this was a sea loch, now only a narrow strip of land seperates the loch from the sea, making it land locked fresh water.
The words of this song were said to have been written on the walls of a Carlisle prison cell by a Jacobite prisoner in 1745.
@LadyShesu It is part of a half hour film that was made for the opening of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs national park. It was shown in the small Imax cinema in the visitors center.( this is now an aquarium) near Balloch. DVDs were available and you might get one from the center.
it 's very beautiful

R.I.P. Bon Scott
1946-1980
My ancestors were Jacobites living eventually on the Isle of sky--that is my GGGrandfather did, but I
suspect he was born on the wrong side of the blanket.
Is it possible to camp around this lake? I would like to experience the bonnie banks of loch lomond.
The opening comments are mystifying
What battle was there between Scotland and England in 1745 ?
Does the poster not mean British Government against Jacobites
Exactly, many of the English that fought were also Jacobites and many of the Scottish were loyalists.
wont work. Can anyone find or upload the whole movie!?
@fishman017 I am from Colorado, live in Co. Springs. My lifelong dream is to walk along the banks of Loch Lomond and the west coast around Malliag-great beach scenery (think of the movie "Local Hero"-my fav). What a thrill it must be to know what it's like. I hope you make it back one day :)
how come the entire thing wasn't uploaded?
did you play the Frank Ticheli version? I love how Danny Boy fits right in with Loch Lomond in the music!
Is there anywhere that the rest of this video is available?
great
There is also a video where the rest can be seen
Try Amazon to get hold of the movie :D
Do they not show this film up at the loch?
Post the rest!
Do you know where? The link in the description didn't work :(

Does anyone know how to get the sound track from this special??
Can someone please tell me the name of the group of women who sing their verson of loch lomond? I used to have it on a CD and I want to have that song again!
The Irish roses, I think
FC ♥
They did, hence how I saw it, but now I am unsure as to whether they still do or not :S
it's good portuguese! i'm sorry you're not exiled in brazil. you'd probably enjoy it.
I would have enjoyed this if only it didn't cut off the end - wtf??
Absolutely agree with you
its a really nice film but how come theres no ending? is there one coming?
I thought this would be a history of this place but I guess not really so much.
The dark haired girl has a good voice. Is it...the culmination of years of training?
sorry, aany body can tell me where I can find the All Film ?
streaming or similar,
I just whant to see the film on line,
Now,
but the only way is going to youtube, and the have only a half o' that.
@Hefferman1
But my understanding was that Scotsmen fought against Scotsmen in the rebellion.
I am now confused
@danonutube1 Actually there were Highlanders, Lowlanders and English on both sides in the various Jacobite Risings though by the 45 the English contingent had reduced to a trickle. The Jacobite army only entered England though because the prince had promised them that the English would rise in support! The Pretenders were Catholic but the bulk of the Scots (and bulk of the Highlanders) in the Jacobite Army were Protestant. They were mostly non-juring Episcopalians - that is Scottish Anglicans.
Just a small point..although the British (English parliament called them pretenders almost 100% of the highlands recognized them as the legitimate royal family and the Germans from Hanover who sat on the throne as pretenders...many lowlands Scots and English also acknowledged them as the rightful monarchs after all Prince Charlie's father was born in st James palace London and was the prince of Wales and he was recognized also by the French royal family ,many other royal families throughout Europe and even the Pope in Rome.
Sorry, but the song was written in the 1840's. It's a wonderful and tragic ballad. No doubt intended to add to the romantic mythology surrounding the 45. But no, it was not actually written by a condemned man. All the same I raise my glass to Scotland's true King over the Water. May God bless Francis II until he comes into his own.
where's the rest?!
@cloneoffred No they mean the Jacobites fighting for the rightful King of Scottland against the forces of a murderous German King forced on them by knife point. The Butcher Cumberland was fighting for the house of Hanover, while the men of Scotland fought for Bonnie Prince Charles and Scotland.
I hope this history lesson helps you understand what happened better.
No it doesn’t actually, many Scotsman fought for the British government side
ima a band nerd =P
That's IT? Where's the rest of the story?
So much more proper when sung as a lament as oppsed to the Bing Crosby/hollywood style
where can i down load the full movie ??????????
It's on Hulu, if you have a subscription
Is the narrator a fellow Dundonian?
what is the rest of the story?
I loved that song til I new what it ment
1046 LOCH LOMOND 24-7-09 27-7-09
well they only started tellin it, one was to be be pardoned back to tell the story [the high road] an the other hanged, when you die you join the sihe an travel the low road back home if you have unfinished business and the clan [like Donnachaie]
@danonutube1 There were hardly any Catholics in Scotland in the 17th and 18thC. Small pockets on the mainland, some of Clad Donald, and several smaller island clans. Approximations have put the Catholic population of Scotland at that time at anywhere from about 2% - 5%. Probably nearer the 2%. Just because Jacobites from Ireland and England tended to be Catholic it doesn't mean Scotland was the same. Different histories! Religious conflict in 17thC Scotland was presbyterian v episcopalian.
@malamutefrau Of course you would,it`s beautiful.Did you know god is scottish.
what about the sea monster?
that's another loch!
Lol the lowlanders were predominantly Protestant lol not catholic please forgive the typo
@finchen1967
you think one should write a comment in ones own tongue under an english spoken video?
think again!
the least you could do is spell it right.
'Lomond'
hell of shit..
@ scottishjohn
If you left because it is shit, why then do you tell everyone of your heritage by the name you use, and why then frequent Scottish sites. Perhaps a wee bit of the heart still has a wee bit love for her.
Die singen 1. falsch und fahren 2. auf der falschen Seite !
