And besides, it's not up to Rachel who gets to be the lead actor's understudy. With that said, Rupert, the director, should have auditioned for understudies without Rachel being there. Rachel is neither a director, producer, or casting director no matter even if she's one of the lead actors. Rachel has to learn what an actor's boundaries are even if it's a lead role. It's not as if she's the one paying whosoever would be the understudy.

    • @agenttheater5
      @agenttheater5 4 года назад +76

@@missbazel3224 No they didn't. They just reminded us who Rachel really was, that she's alway has been and always will be a self-entered, spoiled, attention seeking child, the same who said that that Sandy teacher was molested a student not because he actually was touching a student without permission but because he didn't give her the song she wanted, the same who stormed out of the glee club because she felt that Artie couldn't match her voice and then again because she didn't get the song from West Side Story, the same Rachel who sent Sunshine Corazon to a non-active crackhouse and then lied about her reasons and then accused Sunshine of trying to make her feel guilty so she'd give a bad performance, the same Rachel who wore tape over her mouth in 'protest' that she didn't get the solo at the upcoming sectionals despite having the solo at every contest beforehand. Yes, she grows as a person throughout the series, but then she always slides back into her old behaviour because everything goes her way again. Soon as she gets something she wants she moves onto the next best thing without enjoying what she's got, even if it's something she wanted badly for ages beforehand. She never fully admits to her wrongdoings or personality flaws, whenever she does its followed by excuses and placing the blame on other people or playing the victim. She is who she has been through the whole show, we just didn't want to admit it.

This isn't "unrealistic" writing for Rachel people. This bullshit actually happens. People get blown up egos and derail their goals in blind ambition for constant "opportunity". They stop looking at what they have and stop building their foundation for the chance of the next best thing. Rachel was OVERFED and spoiled with praise. This was even stated in the pilot episode. Her parents, Mr Schuester, her classmates on and off. All of them built her up and made her feel like she was this star already when in NYC, you are simply girl number 798,456 to walk into that casting building that day. And without building your foundation you will become girl number 167,467,400. Rachel thought she was 1 and that's what fucked her.

She is compulsively obsessed with the spotlight and will do whatever is necessary to be in the spotlight as quickly as possible, but as she moved up in the world, she never appreciated what she had, she was always seeking more, and that was her eventual downfall that she spent all of season 6 trying to recover from. Yep, the writers could usually not stick to character development. I actually think with Kurt, they stuck pretty decently to it, aside from that one slip up where he emotionally cheated on Blaine in S2, and a couple of rather ignorantly bigoted and sexist things he said. However, that was a problem in the writing for a lot of characters on GLEE at times, not just Kurt, because RIB and the writers were racist, misogynistic,, biphobic, and ableist idiots, who projected their bigotry onto their characters on the show at times.
With Finn, Will/Mr. Schue, Puck, Santana, Quinn, Blaine, Jake, Artie, Tina in later seasons, and especially Rachel starting in S2, though, the character derailment was REALLY BAD.

    • @altarium4220

Quinn was the most egregious one to me. Come S2, she was obsessed with Finn, prom queen and her popularity again, and completely forgot about her friendship with Mercedes.
Come S3 she was obsessed with getting her daughter back even though she gladly gave her away to Shelby.
Come S4, she mentions how she’s over men defining her. Come S5, and she lets a man define her.

She got the lead in Cabaret and then decided she didn't want it anymore (yes for nobler reasons but ultimately that's what happened). She worked to get into NYADA and then when they didn't tell her what she wanted to hear she quit to focus on Broadway. And now that something even bigger than Broadway comes along, she quit Broadway. Her theme song, whether she wants to admit it or not, is Sophie Tuckers "After You Get What You Want You Don't Want It". She's ambitious, spoiled, selfish, and she's gotten away with it too many times to ever learn from her mistakes, so she thinks she's invincible and that everything will always come up roses for her. Sidney didn't forgive her and wasn't nice to her so she shut his warning out of her head and listened instead to the words "A show all about you".

The main problem with Rachel’s character is that they never allowed her to have any character development. Every time she might, she just gets everything handed to her which, coming from an actor’s perspective, is just not realistic. If someone like Rachel pulled this irresponsible crap in real life, they would never work again. My teacher told a story about a girl who threw away an opportunity to go on tour because she didn’t want to leave her husband. But they said at the beginning of every callback if you can’t do these dates please leave. She never worked again.
Yet Rachel pulls this crap time and time again and gets everything she wants and never learns from anything like some of the other characters. You can have all the talent in the world but if you’re not humble and kind, it really doesn’t matter.

To all of the stans that defend Rachel with the same “shes ambitious”, “she works hard for what she wants”, or “she deserves it”, all of those are wrong. There is so much more to deserving something than your talent or drive for it. In her case she has worked for broadway her entire life and has sculpted her entire life to be an amazing performer. But you know what else is required to be in the show business? Respect. Gratitude.
Rachel has never once respected anyone during the entire course of the series because she constantly and adamantly states that she has the most talent, regardless if that’s true or not, she has verbally and emotionally (and even in some particular cases physically) abused people on the grounds that she is allowed to.
Every single time Rachel gets something she wants (literally 99% of the show), she refuses to let go of it and holds it in high regard as a way to cast shadows on the rest of the people in her life. Whether it be her getting all the solos, leads in the musicals, a student at NYADA, the lead on a broadway show, etc. Whenever her position is threatened, she will do whatever it takes (even if that means hurting the people she’s closest to) with not a single ounce of consequence. She displays zero gratitude for the things she has and instead lauds it over those who don’t have what she has. What makes it worse is that whenever something greater than what she has rolls by, she will jump at it showing no regret for all the privileges she gets fallen into her lap. Say it with me now, she is the most ungrateful person in the show.

As an actor, Rachel really pissed me off. The whole way through, the only thing she had going for her was her talent. Every other part of her personality is the exact thing you're told will get you NOWHERE in the acting world - it's 60% personality, 30% work ethic and 10% actual talent.
If you're only interested in being a star, or get complacent enough to put yourself before the show and pull this kind of shit, or go out of your way to undermine other people so you can come out on top like she did countless times over the years, directors won't want to work with you. And it irritated me that they kept turning her deplorable actions into something that actually works out.
Like here: she gets a well-deserved bollocking for that (I've had a similar talk from accidentally missing a scene once), but instead of it having an ACTUAL impact, instead the scene ends with her getting a TV pilot being written, so she ends up vindicated, not schooled.

She needed to be taken down a peg, and this was the time to do it. And throwing away her LIFELONG dream just to do something for her to become more famous and more egocentric was ridiculous for her to do, so she deserved to have everything taken away from her. And then that's how the show ends. With teaching people to follow rules and not become an arrogant selfish asshole. Thank you for your time and attention.

While this is very out of character for Rachel, plot wise they needed to get Rachel off Broadway and give her a reason to start the Glee Club back up since she is the main character since Corey's passing. The Glee Club is what the show was about and without having a Glee Club subplot, the show was no longer Glee. It was about some misfits from Ohio trying to find themselves in New York. If they kept her on Broadway, then the plot would have no further use for her as a character since her life would just be that: Broadway. It's very sad to say, but I think if Corey Monteith were still with us they wouldn't have done this to Rachel's character since it was obvious they were working toward Finn taking over the club. It is bad writing, but they needed a proper ending where the Glee Club was thriving and they decided this was the best route to take to get that ending.

Rachel's childhood dream of playing her favorite part in her favorite musical has come to realization. And after 2-3 shows she's tired of it, and wants to do a tv show that focuses more on acting rather than singing/performing? This isn't Rachel Berry. It's out of character, and terrible writing. Yes, Rachel has always been bratty, spoiled, and greedy, but only when it came to her performances and musical career. Would she have compromised her role of Fanny Brice for an even bigger Broadway opportunity? Probably. Would she have risked it for a tv show? Never.

The writers plotted this entire situation incorrectly and unrealistic for her character. The character Rachel has big dreams and lots of ambition for Broadway. She’d prevent any distractions and other things from stopping her. She would know that lying to her boss is a horrific idea. I still understand why the writers decided to plot this situation, for some nice drama, entertainment and conflict of course. It just wasn’t realistic and something that character would do.
