Well, John Phillips wrote the anthem for the summer of 1967: " San Francisco ( flowers in your hair )" sung by Scott McKenzie. Scott had a great voice, and was a big friend of John's and appeared in later line-up of ""The "Mamas and Papas"

This group had a LOT of hits in the very short time (about three years) that they were together. For such a short tenure, they had a GIGANTIC lasting impact on the music industry.

Hard to get an good sound live period, no vocal monitors until 1969. The band did pretty good at Monterrey Pop - in spring, 1967 - but most TV shows were lip-synced. Lots of subtleties in this type vocal music.
As an aside, Michelle and Cass refused to do the ba-da, ba-dadada intro. They thought it was corny. John insisted it would be a hit song though, and the intro was crucial. He was right.
Michelle's bio has a lot of details like that.

Just to add my 2 cents on John Phillips, his life took a downturn after Mamas and Papas broke up in late 60s. He had major drug problems. His daughter Mackenzie Phillips, a TV star in the 70s, has accused her dad, John, of some pretty bad stuff in the 70s. Some of it has been disputed by both of John's wives (one being Michelle other being Mackenzie's mom). Believe what you wish but John's life certainly took a downturn after breakup of Mamas and Papas.
I will add that I saw a program years ago (I think it was called 'Behind The Music') that told the story of Mamas and Papas. John was interviewed for the program and spoke freely of his drug problems, suggesting it was in the past. Michelle and Denny Doherty were interviewed as well. They spoke freely of their brief affair.

The pause: old musical saying; "The silence in music is just as important as the notes." Here, this performance proves that at the end. An old but effective, dramatic trick. Try "This is Dedicated to the One I Love" by the Mamas and the Papas...the harmonies and the whole thing always sends chills up and down my spine. and my spine is pretty damned old lol.

"Creeque Alley", is a sort of an autobiographical song written by John and Michelle Phillips that made it to #5 on the Hot 100 in 1967. Reportedly, Cass was never offended by the lyric "No one's getting fat, 'cept Mama Cass". Cass's birth name was Ellen Naomi Cohen.

Cass had one of the best senses of humor of any celebrity ever. If you ever listen to the Mamas & Papas performance at the Monterey Pop Festival, you can hear her joking about how someone asked her when the baby was due! And DAMN what a voice!

    Super song Dani!
According to Wikipedia (geman) entered the single the US hit parade in April 1966, where it reached first place and held it for three weeks. It was the group's first and only number one hit and at the same time, their biggest hit with 3.5 million copies sold. So you have made a very good choice.

Hey Dani, TV Lip-Syncing came about in the exact opposite way. TV Studio Sound systems were designed for medium range mostly VERBAL MONO sound. Adequate for SPOKEN words but NO MATCH for the 1950s-1960s HIGH FIDELITY STEREO capabilities of the Record Company STUDIO setups. Quality STEREO TV did not become available until into the 1980s. I believe that Sometimes, Ed Sullivan used a combined technique of recording or using existing MUSIC tracks before the Tv broadcast - then having the artist LIVE SING just the vocal part and then broadcasting the combined sound - a good compromise for the mid-1960s
    Great Channel..! -cheers : )

In the middle of the video, they do a nice perfect segue from the Dylan/ Castrinos / cover back to the original Mamas Papas version, (complete w/ film of M / P recording in studio.." ) At the end of the video...they reveal Michelle Phillips sitting in the control room of the Dylan / Castrinos / cover and Michelle's reaction to it.

Try their songs"California Dreamin', 'Dedicated to the One I love', ' Twelve Thirty" , 'Words of Love", and of course, their autobiographical song of their own story sung by them which is rare to hear a group do, called 'Creeque Alley"
Creeque (pronounced creaky) Alley is a real place, one of a series of alleys (actually named Creeque's Alley and owned by the Creeque family) in the Virgin Islands.
    In the song 'Creeque Alley',
They are telling the (autobiographical) story of how they formed so they are talking about each of them and other singers/groups they were in, associated with, or friends with. Folk Music is where Michelle and John Phillips came out of in the early sixties. "John and Mitchy were gettin' kind of itchy Just to leave the folk music behind". Next lyric refers to Denny Doherty and Zal Yanovsky trying to make it big, get gigs, record made, recording contracts, anything: "Zal and Denny workin' for a penny Tryin' to get a fish on the line" "In a coffee house Sebastian sat
And after every number they'd pass the hat" refers to how John Sebastian, who wasn't a member of the Mamas and Papas, started out, as many folk singers did in the fifties and sixties. Song's lyrics: "McGuinn and McGuire couldn't get any higher, but that's what they were aiming at. Doesn't refers to drugs as much as aiming to reach the heights of music popularity and also a play on the Bryd's hit song "Eight Miles High'. 'McGinn' refers to Roger McGuinn, the lead singer of the pop/folk group 'The Byrds'. McGuire' refers to singer Barry McGuire who had some big hits in the mid-sixties, especially 'Eve of Destruction'. Example of the meaning of lyrics in the song: "Zally said Denny, you know there aren't many Who can sing a song the way that you do, let's go south Denny said Zally, golly, don't you think that I wish I could play guitar like you", refers Zal Yanovsky and Denny Doherty getting together, then joined by John Sebastian, "Zal, Denny and Sebastian sat (at the Night Owl) And after every number they'd pass the hat" was the three yound men trying to make it big before Denny met Cass Elliot and she joined the three guys. "When Denny met Cass he gave her love bumps..." (she was infatuated with him)..."Call John and Zal and that was the Mugwumps..." (The Mugwumps were a 1960s folk rock band, based in New York City. It released one self-titled album in 1967 and two singles. The Mugwumps found little success during their short time together in 1964, and are best known for launching the careers of Cass Elliot and Denny Doherty and John Sebastian and Zal Yanovsky who made up the group the Mugwumps, pronounced 'MUG-wamps', as in it rhymns with 'swamps'. After the group's breakup, Denny Doherty went on to team with Michelle ad John Phillips while John Sebastian and Za Yanovsky formed their group 'The Lovin' Spoonful'.... Hence the song's lyrics in Creeque Alley: "...Sebastian and Zal formed the (Lovin') Spoonful..Michelle, John (Phillips), and Denny gettin' very tuneful..." The writer of the song, John Phillips, takes some poetic licensein lyrics like "When Cass was a sophomore, planned to go to Swarthmore, But she changed her mind one day. Standin' on the turnpike, thumb out to hitchhike Take me to New York right away..." Cass Elliot hadn't ever planned to go to Swarthmore College but she did want to go to New York City.

You mention that this song was classified as "sunshine pop". I had never heard that phrase before but when I thought about it, another 60's group, The 5th Dimension, came to mind. You should do a reaction to them. They have had many very popular songs like: "Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In" (from the musical Hair), Up-Up and Away, Stoned Soul Picnic, Wedding Bell Blues and One Less Bell to Answer, among many more. My favorite is one of their lesser known songs: "Love's Lines Angles and Rhymes" released in 1971 and was mostly a solo by Marilyn McCoo. I think it would be a great reaction for you for you to do. Keep up the great reactions.

By the way, Dani, Michelle Phillips had an affair with Roman Polanski. Roman was Sharon Tate's husband! After the Manson family murdered Sharon and those in the Polanski home, Roman accused John of having something to do with the murders because of the affair he had with Michelle. John was no saint either. He, allegedly, had an affair with his own daughter for 10 years, Mackenzie Phillips. Mackenzie Phillips was the older sister to Valerie Bertinelli on the TV sitcom, One Day at a Time

Hey Dani, more Mamas And The Papas eh? Groovy that mate. Fab indeed. Beautiful harmonies also. Fun facts: Mama Cass was originally not allowed to join the band because of her weight. John Phillips thought she would turn off the fans. While on a trip to the Virgin Islands back in 1968 I believe, Mama Cass got hit in the head by a pipe. But the crazy thing is this weird accident improved Cass’ vocal ability by 3 notes. This crazy folk band soon ended up shagging each other, which caused no end of stupid dramas for them.👍🇦🇺🤪

It's not that so much as the fact that most TV shows didn't want the time-consuming (and therefore expensive) hassle. Musical sequences in feature films had almost always been mimed to a pre-recorded track so it was a logical step to do the same for TV.

I gave my M & P reccos in your previous post. Never really liked this one much, not sure why. The vocal tracks seem to overwhelm everything on this clip, a bad mix, but the arrangement is characteristically powerful. I forgot to mention another of their great songs, 'Dancing Bear,' a solo performance by Denny with an ambitious woodwind intro and outro. I read somewhere it was his personal favourite. Speaking of Denny, I wish he'd kept his damn head still. His movements are quite goofy. You don't see John doing that.

Lip syncing has been around for a LONG time. Most of the 60’s groups lip synced a lot of their TV performances just out of convenience.

They usually weren't allowed to do otherwise. Rare exceptions were German programmes like Beat Club. They had a lot of British Beat groups on and there are a lot of videos on this site which are the only records of the time of some groups/songs playing live.

the relationship between John and Michele just cant be reduced to she cheated on him-their relationship wasnt monogamous.. John Phillips also had a horrendous drug problem and used drugs with his then very young daughter MacKenzie Phillips (the TV/Movie actress) and as a result had an incestuous relationship with her which, obviously, messed her up pretty bad. At the height of his drug use, he was trafficking drugs and was arrested. He had some real issues.

I'm unaware of John having an affair while with the Mamas and Papas and I can't find a mention of it at Wikipedia. John's life took a turn for the worse after the group broke up in 1968-69, I think you will find that most if not all the problems you mention occurred after the group disbanded in the late 60s.

@@hongfang2508 wikipedia isnt likely the best place to get that type of info. There are plenty of articles about him. They arent hard to find. His marriage to Michelle was described as "open". While his problems were worse after the break up of the group, they were severe. He used a lot of drugs (as they all did) while the group was together and the magnitude of his actions/problems, before or after the break up, are such that they cant be dismissed because they occurred after the group broke up.

@@bopep1368 ---Michelle had a second affair with Gene Clark of the Byrds (after the affair with Doherty) and was kicked out of the group, later returning after her replacement was not up to the job.
So her second affair was enough to get her kicked out of the group, albeit briefly. If John was having affairs while the group was together, it was a big secret because I can find no mention of it.

@@hongfang2508 you arent looking then. Its pretty easy to find. This is from the first article I pulled up... " Phillips was also having affairs with other people! Nevertheless, he was furious when he found out about Michelle....and kicked Michelle out of the band" Why does it matter anyway?

    • @hongfang2508
      @hongfang2508 3 года назад

@@bopep1368 ---I'm looking for accuracy. That's why it matters to me.
I googled John Phillips and open marriage and found this bit from a site called Grunge (never heard of it before). The bit I quote below says the Phillips had an open marriage AFTER Michelle's affair with Doherty.
According to Biography, the Phillipses' marriage would become fraught with troubles, which affected their band's dynamics. Michelle had an affair with bandmate Denny Dougherty (misspelled in article), which led to both a separation from John (and later an open marriage) and Michelle temporarily getting fired from the group. Their daughter, Chynna Phillips, was born in 1968, but a baby wasn't enough to keep them together, and they divorced in 1969.

OK enjoy the music from my era. I do have one criticism. That is that you said you thought Elvis Presley's version of the Righteous Brothers classic hit "You've Lost that Lovin Feeling" was better than the Righteous Brothers. Wow, I get that you like Elvis, but do you know that the Righteous Brothers song was the most played on the radio of any song in the 20th century? This is beyond classic, one of the best recordings in history. Your judgement must be skewed in some strange way as Elvis was a pioneer of sorts and had many hits, but he never came close to the talent level of either Bill or Bobby. He was a tragic figure in a way devolving into almost a parody of himself. Sorry, but i won't bother watching any more of your reactions. Dave
