My pop’s went to LA Jordan with the lead singer of the Platters. He was able to reconnect with her before they both passed.
Sounds like Doo wop was like the hip hop of that era..Something every one could agree was dope
it's better than any other music from the 50s at least
Wow cool stories
The Penguins were an early "doo-wop" group that was formed by several classmates at Los Angeles' Fremont High School in the early 1950s (one of its members, Curtis Williams, had previously been a member of The Hollywood Flames). They took their name from the character "Willie the Penguin" on the package of "Kool" cigarettes, a brand that one of the members smoked. The Penguins' only hit,"Earth Angel" eventually sold in excess of ten million copies. The original recording of the song remained an enduring hit single for much of the 1950s, and it is now considered to be one of the definitive doo-wop
thanks for that history.
this was pretty insightful! its cool to hear about the music that was poppin in the 50s

I grew up in Watts. Went to school Davis & Centennial in Compton
My Maternal Grandma & Her Siblings Are From The Jardin. My Materal GrandFather Was From Quarter Gang In Watts ✊🏽 #IYKYK
Are they still around ?
My Grandmother Is Still Alive, Her Brother Still Resides In The Family Home On 117th Place. My Gramps Isnt Alive Anymore. As Far As The Gangs; Naw, My Older Cousins Tried To Carry On El Jardin Name But That Too Came To An End. To My Understanding Quarter Gang Turned Into La Colonia. I Wish You Had Interviewed A Gentlemen By The Name of Victor Bono (RIP). He Organized The Annual Watts ReUnions Where OGs From Quarter Gang, Hickory, Jardin, Elm St, Palomar, Grape, Colonia Etc. All Gathered For A Picnic Potluck Style. So Much History Through Pictures & Stories Were Shared. Not To Mention All of Our Families Ended Up Meeting & It Was There You Found Out Who Was Related To Who. Lots of Street Beefs Were Squashed Bcuz of Our Elders✊🏽
The Farmers were led by ND, who is related to Tyrone Tate.
Clubs from that era were
Slausons
Businessmen
Gladiators (Westside)
Farmers (Watts), later turned into the Excelos.
Huns (Watts)
D'Artagnans (Claimed Watts)- Marquette Frye was from this club. He was the one CHP pulled over, and from that traffic stop the 65 Watts Rebellion popped off. MARQUETTE FRYE DID NOT START IT, He was already in the backseat of the patrol car. An aggressive CHP officer who got physical with a woman, started the domino effect.
Vineyards
Rebel Rousers
Outlaws
Etc.
ND?
