- To mark the 15th anniversary of Open Season, watch the video for Please Stand Up- one of the singles taken from the album - in HD for the first time.
Rough Trade Records are excited to announce that a reissue of Sea Power’s majestic second album, ‘Open Season’, was released on 6th November, 2020. The expanded reissue included additional radio sessions, B-sides and rarities from the period, plus extensive new sleeve notes. There is also a Limited Edition vinyl gatefold version of 2,500 copies, with one disc on blue vinyl and the other with a zoetrope image.
The majority of the original album was recorded by Mads Bjerke (Spiritualized, Primal Scream, Girls Aloud) and mixed by Bill Price (Sex Pistols, The Clash, Sparks). Two tracks were recorded and mixed by Graham Sutton (Jarvis Cocker, Bark Psychosis) and Phill Brown (Sly Stone, Led Zeppelin, Dusty Springfield).
Sea Power’s debut album, ‘The Decline Of British Sea Power’, was released two years prior to ‘Open Season’, in 2003. In the interim Sea Power had toured the world with a series of excellent groups including The Flaming Lips, The Strokes, Interpol, Pulp, The Killers, The Duke Spirit and The Copper Family. Over the same period, Sea Power had been acclaimed by David Bowie, Bill Oddie, Radiohead, Lou Reed, Ludovic Kennedy, REM, Ian Rankin, Julian Cope, Jon Savage and Daniel Radcliffe. ‘Open Season’ is an album with both lustrous pop thrills and an ambitious sense of rock scale. An album where they sing of girls and guillotines, love and Larsen B, the foremost of all the collapsing Antarctic ice shelves. They say that you see great things from the valley, and small things from the peak. We feel confident that this record brings you both perspectives. It’s Open Season again and anything is possible.
“Not just a marvellous album, Open Season comes with optimism attached… It's a triumphant lesson in sweeping gracefully towards the mainstream with your imagination and mystery intact.”
- The Guardian
“All of this unique oddness would not, of course, mean a thing without the music, and this is an album without a single duff track.” - NME
“By maintaining their singular aesthetic while venturing into more inviting pop sounds, the weirdest band from Brighton just might have become the smartest.” - Pitchfork
“Less chaotic and parochial, more serene and accessible, but no less magical.” - MOJO

thank u disco elysium, let me know this wonderful band
I had this strong urge to listen to this song today. I don’t know why, but I’m glad that I suddenly remember this.
Oh man brings me back, saw these guys live, opening for The Killer in 2004
such an underrated band... they are really talented
So underrated have always been in my top ten list
Funny story, I heard this once on the radio on Indie 103.1 while driving through Orange County one night back in 2004.
You know how you’ll hear a song, and it’s a good song and you sort of figure: well yeah I’ll hear this again.
Only thing I never did.
and I liked the song.
So after many years I was like: ok … did I just imagine the song? What was that band? What was that song?
I was in my early 20’s at the time, and was on my way to work a catering event, had the song stuck in my head all night, and it was a very meaningful time in my life.
Now please understand. I searched for it in the Limewire days back in the 2000’s.
Searched through many playlists from that era over time.
Then with Spotify I scrolled searched thousands of songs.
Finally I gave up on looking for it.
Then one day this year in 2024 I decided to try again after finding a commercial I had been trying to find for years.
Later that day I was driving in Waipahu in Hawaii, and listening to music.
First song: not it, then I skipped through another couple songs; not it.
Here we go again, I thought, not at all expecting to find it.
Then I started playing the next song. About twenty seconds in was like: no way! This is it! This is actually it!
I searched twenty years for this song.
How delightfully obscure and underground. Bravo
I adore this album.
What an amazing song. Loved it instantly as soon as the guitar kicks at the start, it's like, oh yes this is going to be great. Just discovered this band this is the first song I listened to. Completely addicted now. Best British band of the last 10 years!
What a superb band...
Sea Power now....o well, this song is still an anthem!
I'm glad that people still like the band I know the name change is unnecessary and stupid but I'm glad some people can over look it :)
i first heard of them when i was looking at the line-up rumours for reading 2008. waving flags was the first of their songs i watched the music vid on youtube. love in an instant
Blissfully good. This band is better than anything I've heard in ages.
I love this song
I Agree with you,British Sea Power is a fantastic band, with fantastic records, especially the first one (my favourite),and even so,they don't any credit,I think I am the only person who knows this band in Argentina haha.
Once Covid is over--this is the song for that.
Oh take me somewhere quiet please
These motorway exit gates
Are calling to me dearly
And I need a place to go
And even numbers on a timetable
Arrivals and departures and
Those places' names
Never seemed so strange before
If there's anyone asking, did you get a rush?
There's no point in asking if it wasn't enough
There's nobody else here, so please stand up
If there's anyone asking, did you get a rush?
There's no point in asking, it wasn't enough
There's nobody else here, so please stand up
The occultation of a summer sun
Was burning holes in everyone
Defenceless, what was left inside could finally escape
It seemed as if the streets had melted
It seemed as if the air was scented
I wish all of time could be like this
If there's anyone asking, did you get a rush?
There's no point in asking, it wasn't enough
There's nobody else here, so please stand up
Oh oh, oh my love
If there's anyone asking, did you get a rush?
There's no point in asking, it wasn't enough
There's nobody else here, so please stand up
And then all of the sudden it's all better better
A little excitement makes us wetter wetter
Oh my love
Again, again, again, again my love
Excelent!!! this is a good song...
Just fantastic at Splendour
This is my favourite song of theirs.
one of the best bands around today, love them
they are so amazing... I love BSP!
Love them.
Just booked to see them in Dublin, can't wait :)
amazing!
Please stand up
I love the heavily stylised but effectively simple video :D
Of course, the song is also amazing
this guys rock! i just wished i've met them before...! tomorrow they'll certainly make my day easier! :)
fantastic
why this song met so little success ?
Drape yourself in greenery; become part of the scenery.
Tuneeeeee

I can't wait for the third record.
Zaida from Argentina
Beautiful song!!You are right Rodders2000 :)
Correct one of the greatest albums ever made....Glenn
muy buena cancion!!!
@neverno0 This band's ability to inhabit whole different sounds so effortlessly just based on the songs they've written at the time, going from indie pop sounds like here (Open Season) to soundtracks (Man of Aran) to balls-out post-punk (Decline), never ceases to amaze me.
great song. new albumm is superbe also
Still their best song
Wonderful song from the mighty 'Sea Power'. No longer 'British' but 'Internationalist' apparently.
@polarisrex Well at least we can agree on that. Thank you.
not the only one, hola!
Великолепие)
@rodders2000 I agree with what you say in absolute totality. It's just when you say they never "got" the credit they deserve. They still may. They undoubtedly deserve to be heard a great deal more than they have been over the past 7 years. Can't bloody wait for a new album from them. Man of Arran was a nice piece of work, but I'd like to see a regular non-soundtrack album from them again pretty sharpish!
does anyone else listening in 2021?
❤
Did I just make a really low quality rip of my copy of "Open Season", or is this version of the song much richer than the one found on the album? I have to get the CD out to check now (low tech here I come!)
L6-S, Crestwood, Jazz
@topiltzinitli yes
Bob or Bill. Dunno, who cares? It's the music that matters!
im argentinian too! :D
A mas argentinos nos llego BSP , saludos !!!
@KevinInSweden1 was thre also they rocked
Gorgeous, amazing, huuuuge... anyone got the chords by any chance??? they're nowhere on the net...
And the bird call at the beginning and end of the video is?
What's the brand of the guitarist's blue shirt?
y yo el unico en mexico jajaja.... buena banda... aca no es nada conocida
BSP COME TO ARGENTINA¡¡ PLEASE
Thanks God!Hola! :)
@marcesim20 Buenisimooo dos siiiii XD yo hablo con un chico de Inglaterra que su amigo iba al colegio con el baterista de BSP ♥ Saludos!!!desde Argentina :)
2007 : “ Porta'm a un lloc tranquil, si us plau
Aquestes portes de sortida de l'autopista
Ara em criden intensament
I necessito un lloc on anar
I números parells en un horari
Arribades i sortides
I aquells llocs
Aquells noms.
Abans no semblava tan estrany
Aquells llocs
Aquells noms
Res semblava tan estrany abans
Oh, oh, amor meu
Si hi ha algú que et pregunta : has tingut pressa ?
No té sentit preguntar, no n’hi ha prou
No hi ha ningú més aquí
Per tant, sisplau, aixeca’t
No té sentit preguntar, no n'hi ha prou
No hi ha ningú més aquí,
Així que, sisplau, aixeca’t
I de sobte tot va millor
Una mica d'emoció ens humireixa
Oh, el meu amor !!
De nou, de nou, de nou,
De nou, amor meu !! “
@polarisrex Well, I think that heritage is important, and while we're here: what exactly has America (and Americans) moved on to?
This man sounds like Butler from the Psychedelic Furs.
Hamilton looks alike Hugh Grant, definitely hot!

@CamersonLowery Og
And the lyrics!?
'Take me somewhere quiet please/these motorway exit gates are calling to me dearly...' Outstanding opening lines
@CamersonLowery Oh really? I never knew that! I was born yesterday, and know nothing of what gies on in the world...I am perfectly aware of Americans speeling things differently (wrong), but being who I am, I intensely dislike spelling mistakes, and as you can see, commenting on them generally makes for a humo(u)rous outcome! But I thank you for your concern about my supposed lack of worldly knowledge.
@Ogtriff Thanks for clearing that up for me. I don't think that Americans seem to forget it as much as I believe that they don't care in the first place. The only people who really bring up such things any more are, well....the British. See, we've moved on.
Sheldon is that you!?
@njdevil281 Yes, you've won the argument. Victory for you. Parades will be held in your honor across the nation and you can expect your certificate in the mail. You'll need to sign it, though. Hope you won't need help with that one.
@polarisrex You seem to like correcting spelling mistakes - an admirable pastime, but only if you don't make them yourself. 'Honor' should be spelled: 'Honour'.
did they start booing or ?
They are amazing, I can see why Argentinians would shy away from a band with their name though!!!!
I think BSP go by the name "The Malvinas" in Argentina ... same deal as The Beat going with "The English Beat" in the U.S.
2023?
I'm also drunk and I also want BSP's babies
Chameleons?
routine and superfluous
o0o
Remember: there is no US/UK joke. English is the currency. RN.
this was Lama joke on you.
Was in the playlist just after the song you asked him. He knews my answer. Damm Chinese. Never trust a chinese without hair, they are all comunists.
Respond to this video...
Oh, and I assume you mean "humour you"?
@Ogtriff What purpose did it serve by opting to "gently comment" on my spelling? You need to learn to pick your battles more wisely. Your beliefs are exactly that, and the fact that you understand them to be truth is a testament to your lack of insight here. Again, you're not the authority on America....just as I'm not the authority on the British. I'm sorry it's beneath someone like you to swear. It sets an example for all of us. In my heart of hearts, I wish I was more like you.
They are filling my gap while I'm waiting for Snow Patrol to make their comeback
it's a joke right? snow patrol are shit while bsp is one of the best brit bands ever
James Fisher don’t do british sea power dirty like this ever again
am I wrong if I remeber Morrisey?
Yes.
@Ogtriff Only if I'm a limey. Americans don't spell it that way. Anglocentric much? Or is it just ill-informed? Your move.
lol
Very B R I T I S H .... no?
@mahtabvideos
Child molestation is so wrong. so wrong.
@Ogtriff why make idiotic generalisations about a country with 300 million individuals? Americans differ from state to state, city to city and subculture to subculture. It's probably one of the most diverse countries in the world. And I'm an Indian born Australian.
@polarisrex That's also true, but I shall continue to belittle America all I want. I accept that I am not the foremost authority on America, and there is more to some of you than cursing and violence. Again, however, you degrade this whole argument by pointlessly swearing in a pathetic attempt to either frighten me off or make yourself look 'cool' to all the other (dare I say it?) Americans out there who are in to "cursing". Be careful how you bandy words, or you may meet with a harsh peripetaia
A bit classic U2, a bit Joy Division, a bit Echo and The Bunnymen, all KICK ASS!
@polarisrex I came on here to just gently comment on your spelling, not to be sworn at by a random person I don't know, or care to know. Here is what I want to say: America is the only nation in history which has miraculously gone directly from barbarism to degeneration without the usual interval of civilisation. Oh, and no one can be as calculatedly rude as the British, which amazes Americans, who do not understand studied insult and can only offer abuse as a substitute. Hence your swearing...
@polarisrex Very Anglo-centric. Not your fault, but I'm not so keen on Yanks...They always seem to forget we made America in the first place...Most certainly not ill-informed, *sir*.
