Should have fitted a gasket either side of the spacer plate or at least some silicone, also should have greased the ball and the little tabs that meet the springs. Usually (like on yours) the grease on the ball has dried up and re greasing improves the change considerably even without the quickshift kit.
Not replacing the gasket hurt my soul at least slap some gasket sealer or JB on there 🙃
Hello stranger I put a slickshift in I'm TD5 a a couple of years ago and love it.
Had to laugh at you trying to remember what you had done to improve the ride quality of your Defender while sitting in (and failing to mention) the most comfortable looking car seats I have seen in my life.
😂😂 I did forget. However nothing destroys comfort like a set of mud terrains tyres that never go on mud but look cool
@@thedoctorsgarage Very true. They do look good though. I like my ATs but I previously had a set of Michelin Latitude Cross Terrains which were very quiet and had great handling, but they wore out too quickly.
I’m so going to get one of these for my defender too. Great videos thanks
It’s a great mod!
I've got one on my LT77 and made a huge difference... A really good mod
🙏🏼🙏🏼
Similar fitting process to the r380?
I get contact dermatitus just looking at those gear knobs. I quite like the look of the Defender Heritage Gear shifter knobs from Mud UK. Worth a a look?
Will take a look! 👌🏻
Did you go back and replace the damaged gaskets? You could find that without the whole gasket oil will seep out, but this looks a good modification, the only downside for me is that the French customs charge will double the cost now. Chris B.
Thanks Chris- yes I need to go back in and do that and sort that Nylon cup- do you think there will a bit leak of gasket oil without a seal?
@@thedoctorsgarage I dont think there is any oil sloshing around in there, but there was a gasket, so it must have been necessary, maybe some gasket silicone would suffice, each side of the spacer would need it as well. Chris B.
@@thedoctorsgarage think the gaskets are more to prevent water getting in, as has been said, there's not oil sloshing around in that little compartment, fit 2 gaskets and grease the ball, makes it much nicer.
Keep up the good work making videos I’m loving them
Cheers Thomas appreciate it 🙏🏼
Great video, loving the content
🙏🏼🙏🏼👌🏻
My feelings as well, never driven with Slickshift though on my 300Tdi I feel fine the way it is, maybe I got used to it or maybe I'm agricultural myself 😂 I would install one if I have the money which is going into maintenance right now. Ah, I used to have the same front mats as you now have the Land Rover ones, my seat box is covered with that rubber, I know about dropping small pieces... when I was changing the foam on the vent flaps a couple of months ago the bolt nut and washer fell inside the bulkhead below the dash, I panicked for a while... then fortunately as it was very greasy inside there I managed to pick up the bolt with some sellotape on my finger and the other two bits by pushing my finger on the grease where the bits fell, also put in some new mudflap pins changed the original ones with some that screw on, nice improvement.
My knuckles used to hit the dash as I have a central console fitted.
Hiya I can’t rate how brilliant the alive comfort pack is. I have the same as you on my 2011 puma 90, Do you think the gear shift upgrade is relevant for the Puma?. I haven’t driven a TDI for years but my gear change doesn’t feel too bad at all. Is this a worth while upgrade?? Cheers
You can get one for a puma, different kit but its the same website
I’ve spoke to a few people who do have pumas - they say it makes a difference - maybe not as much but they still report it worthwhile doing 👌🏻
Good job.
👌🏻👌🏻 cheers Grahame
I had the same issue with mine so I left it in. It's been fine.
Doc, where have you been buddy?
Had a bit of time off RUclips but I’m
Back now 👌🏻
where have you been Doc!!! Missed the vids.
Appreciate it Luke- had a bit of a RUclips holiday
He’s back !
😂 back on the defender mods!
@@thedoctorsgarage good to see. Hope you’re well
Mines still ruining my life but I love it for some peculiar reason 🤷♂️
Anyone with slickshift find reverse gear harder to select as I have read.
I’ve got one and no issues finding reverse. 👍
Not dead then😁😁
😂 not yet!
I really hope there was some new gaskets installed. Made me cringe seeing half a gasket installed.
I do need to go back in to fit one and replace that nylon cup- for the purpose of a video I’ve left it as it is for now. What’s the risk of leaving it gasket free??
Generally the gaskets are there for a reason, if the gear selector is connected to a wet/oil filled part of the gearbox you will get oil throw up from moving parts in the box. This will then seep past the area without a gasket giving you an oil leak eventually. I would of thought there would of been a new gasket above and below the new spacer. I could be wrong. Thanks for the reply 👍
I mean all that crud around the gear box kinda suggests why it’s sealed 😅
