  • The old Hawthorn tram depot houses the collection of old, historic and unusual trams from Victoria and around the world. You will see modern trams running past the front of the building then we look at what remains of the depot tracks (otherwise known as the depot fan) then move inside to inspect the Melbourne cable tram preserved alongside a European tram (from Italy) then we move into the training room where drivers learned all about the trams including the electrical parts. Then for a walk around the back of the shed. Thursday 14 November 2013.

This was the main training centre for rookie tram drivers in the 70s, 80s & 90s. Don't know if it still is but its an awesome building. I used to go to Swinburne Tech School in Hawthorn and always loved seeing this place!

MY favourite was the moment when the photographer switched FROM landscape TO portrait orientation to try and fit the length of the tram in frame and then realised the folly

The "European Tram" comes from my city (Milan, northern Italy). It's one of a series of 500 units delivered between 1929 and 1930. Some 150 of the type are still running today.

Unfortunately, this site has been closed down to make way for apartments. I am so angry.

What is that tram for in 14:01?
It has some bicycle steps onboard. Is this a maintenance tram?

It was a project done by apprentices and students from RMIT to see if pedaling a generator could make enough current to drive a tram, in theory.
