Just started day one of my journey on code camp today. I put a lot of time in and my head is spinning, but I’m loving it so far. I’m tired of my doing call centers and customer service work, and want to develop more skills and learn something new in hopes of a different career path. Can’t wait to see where I am in the next year or so!

Same as me. I started free code camp a month ago for a change in career path. Definitely taking it nice and easy but it can be challenging at times. I’m still in the responsive web design phase and I’m aiming to complete the entire front end certifications before the year ends.

@@jamalfitch7849 it’s still fun, I’m thinking because it’s not like work and it’s something that I enjoy learning on the side. I did start a new job recently and have not been able to put as much time into it as I’d like. But it’ll be totally worth it in the long run imo

Freecodecamp is a lot more enjoyable and hands-on than Codecademy in my opinion, I recommend it. I love it, you also have a ton of opportunities to earn certifications and build your own projects.

I also used freecodecamp for my self study in web dev. One thing that i like in free code camp is that it is a project based approach and will help you to have a general understanding in programming. I also noticed specially in html and css tutorials that some of the tags or elements are not tackled on the tutorial, i think it is because what they teach are only those elements or tags that people in the industry used in daily basis. So for that i used other references like w3schools. Please bear with me my english is not good, but i hope you guys get my point.

FCC is still relevant. VERY relevant. one example: I watched their ms900 full course video.. took the test and passed it on the first try.

  • @MarcusHCrawford

FCC has contributed immensely to open source education. Though courses vary in quality, and their online courses aren’t as up to date as their videos, that FCC offers a comprehensive course structure for full stack engineers is amazing. Odin and FCC are great resources.

I started with it a few days ago to prepare for university. I will start in fall with studying Informatics. What I find hard in that course, is that every step is quite easy, but I also quickly forget the knowledge of previous lessons. Also some terms are just not noob friendly explained. Like "Use this attribute to assiciate the checkbox with blabla". I mean, okay yes I can do it, but what exactly does "assosiate" mean in this case? The whole thing looks the same as before and I understand that it must have a purpose - but what EXACTLY is it doing? If such things would be explained a bit better in the lessons already, I would always understand WHY I have to do, what I have to do and THAT would make it easier to remember things. Right now I am doing many things, which seem to be easy to do, but I would not be able to recreate the HTML page I just made.

If I dedicate 6 hours daily for the next two months learning scientific programming with python on freecodecamp, then is it possible to make a little bit of money online part time? like 75 to 100 dollars?

I would have to agree, the website is far better. The guided exercises provide a "Make it a game" experience with short-attention challenges and frequent dopamine hits. You can skip any exercise that you want (although this is not encouraged, for good reason) and the every step will start with the previous step completed. Learning from tutorial videos requires more self-motivation.

Anything can be hard when you are first learning. When I first tried FreeCodeCamp it took me a while to understand how to do the Cat Photo App. I didn't care how long a project takes me. If anything that is part of the fun of this course. My first real objective was getting familiar with the basic tools every programmer needs to know. It's like learning how to read. First you start with the letters of the alphabet, how they sound and put words together. Later you learn sentences. I recommend doing the projects at least once or twice maybe a couple of times just to understand the basics and how they work. When I get stuck RUclips is a big help. As I go through the course I have my own study notes for all new material. As you progress through the courses it will get a lot easier. Your first real objective should not be finishing the projects, but just understanding how and when to use the proper tools. Practice makes perfect!

from my reasearch it seems like it's better than nothing, but nowhere near the value of a computer science degree, the value from FCC seems to come from the knowledge itself that you can later use to build your portfolio of real world projects you have done and this is worth more than even a computer science degree in the eyes of many employers
