    @iamstd2 I think the level of autonomy will depend on the roads you drive on. If such a car becomes mandatory it'll probably not let you drive in San Francisco or a packed highway during rush hour (it's not fun to drive in a traffic jam anyways), but It'll most likely allow you to have full control on rural highways while keeping a safety bubble so that you cannot crash even if you try on purpose.

    @bowersbros You didn't pay attention. It creates a 3D map of the objects around it. Cones are objects just like cars. If it can detect a car it can detect a cone or a light. Any information could simply be uploaded to the network for the cars. Internet. Instant communication.

    @MrRednijlad I'd say you'd subscribe to the vehicle service just like car share companies do now. So you'd use your keycard, so they wouldn't be stolen. Plus they'd have cameras

    Well you also have to remember that the technology is relatively new, and theres a lot of progress to be made. However the policeman directing traffic thing may not be such a big problem; already the Kinnect can detect people and their body language in 3D, all you would need to do is find out if they seem to be policeman based on actions and perhaps by uniform. Decoding the hand motions then would be a snap.

    while i dont know everything about this automated car, typically most automated things have a manual override, including the auto pilot on planes, so you wont need to worry about it being purely computer driven. in the tests, the steering wheel is still there, which means the driver has the option to take control whenever he/she wants to.

    If they gave a price, it'd be a lot more than what a final version would cost - overall though, the sensors could have cost ~$10,000.
    The difference though is that once you have cars with these sensors, being mass-produced, the cost goes way down - you don't have to make the sensors compatible with Windows for example, you can just make it spit out basic data - and by doing that, you remove part of the cost of each sensor.

    As shown in the video, traffic lights aren't a problem. It can already handle that. A policeman manually controlling traffic (in the event of traffic light failure or an accident) is an interesting question. I wonder if it would need to signal to the driver to assume control in that type of situation.

    The one thing i haven't heard about or even brought up is. What about emergency vehicles are they going to have some kind of signal that sends to self driving cars alerting them on their incoming location so they know to pull over and stop at a green light.

  • @MrMagickent
    @MrMagickent 12 лет назад

    that's true, the car should have a wider radius of detection. Sometimes oncoming cars are coming fast. The other case is maybe there was a green arrow but because of pedestrians it stopped waiting - still radius issue-

    Don't worry you won't lose your freedom driving, because i have worked in driverless car project at uni, i too love driving and i also love my motorcycle. So you will have people like me who supported all aspect on the road, except accident, that's one of the primary goal, as well as conveniences.

    i think a system like this can work fine under the circumstances that a big amount of all cars in one traffic system are equipped with it. The highest security (and the best preservation of traffic jam) can be reached if all those cars could communicate. if one of the cars fail the other ones could just avoid it. the cars would adapt their speed levels and avoid backlogs. and they could all together create a better and better navigation base by collecting relevant data:)

  • @DaniBarca

    Traffic lights are extremely easy to read by an algorithm (actually this part is already done) and I don't know if it's done yet but an algorithm that reads policeman signs can be done.

    I think that's only a blind spot for the laser guidance system. There are other sensors that can detect things at close range like that.

  • @ryo1999

    @hunterfine Since the autopilot uses a 360°, high resolution laser scanner + a number of radars you can take for granted that it's going to see more than your faulty, primitive binocular "optic sensors" (your ape's eyes) even in a snowstorm or fog.

    The issue is that "this car" isn't a final or whole product - this is like a boring airliner plane testing the engines of a new jet fighter - the new jet engine will be more capable than anything that's ever been made before, but it's currently only being tested for how safe it is.

    Despite our reasoning ability and massive "parallelism", we're also influenced by distractions (texting while driving, dropping coffee in lap, etc.), fatigue, anger and other emotions, poor observance (or sometimes lack of knowledge) of road laws, and several other factors that we seem to not be able to tracking and regulate away. All factors that robotics don't experience.

    There is still a manual driving option. But I bet it'll be frowned upon in a few decades, since automatic will be faster and safer.
    Either way, driving will most likely turn into a sport only. Something restricted to doing laps somewhere, for fun or competition.

    9:17 You see pedestrians on the left starting to cross the street, yet, you enter the intersection with a left turn knowing well you are not going to clear it for a while. The oncoming straight through traffic having the right of way (well, one car in this case), was probably not delighted to have their way blocked for no reason.
    Can this car throw a smile and a sign of apology like we humans do to make up for lack of foresight?
    Or, can it recognize "Oops, i've flanked this one!" to begin with?

  • @vraeleragon92
    @vraeleragon92 12 лет назад

    He meant that since the car cannot differentiate what kind of people will pass in front of the car, it will stop too in front of a thief or a murderer. Then after the murderer kills the passenger, the car will move with the dead body. Well, it's a possibility, but there is manual driving too. There has to be some security measures that Google incorporated in the program.

  • @Dangles1989

    Wow, it looks really impressive. But can I ask American drivers here a question: around 9:30, when the car is an the intersection, it successfully yields to pedestrians but it seems to block an oncoming car going straight through the intersection. That's incorrect behaviour, right? Maybe the car lacks data on what's ahead of it at the intersection.

    Um. What about things like temporary road works, with the traffic lights that are not permanently there. Can it recognise when to go then and whne not to? And, if cones were placed on the road,can it traverse its way around them?

  • @buioso

    the more self driving cars are widespread, the more easy is driving for each car. Because cars can communicate each other data about speed and future direction, something impossible between self driving cars and humans.
    Avoiding misreading is not a problem, in the same way as cell phones do it.

It's great when it's the one car on the road driving this way, but I wonder what would happen when it misreads emissions from other Google cars...

  • @AndrewMeyer
    @AndrewMeyer 12 лет назад

    I'm guessing (and hoping) that the security on this will have more in common with Chrome OS than with iOS as far as security is concerned. Also, since they have full control of both hardware and software, Google could take additional security measures, like isolating essential safety equipment from systems that have network access. Would it be possible to hack? Probably. The deck is stacked in Google's favor though...

    As a software QA this just makes me a little bit uneasy. There are just so many variables to take into account that general (sober) human reasoning would be able to handle that I wonder if a machine could equally handle as well. Maybe I'll be surprised but for now I'm cautious.

    If they make this a standard feature in cars I would expect that it would make the police's job much easier since you wouldn't need to have an officer risk his safety standing in the middle of a highway directing traffic as you could just direct the cars from an office remotely.

    What happens when everyone's car is sending out these laser signals? Won't the reflection of other cars' sensors hinder the accuracy of your own? That's an issue that I think Google will need to figure out, but I have faith that they'll come up with a very elegant solution.

    Google's been at this for Years.. And so is continental now. Alot of interesting comments, but few Qn's still unanswered: I. How it deals with vehicles and places that have infrared and em/spectrum jammers? ii. What if something fell on the brain/top lasers of the car during a thunderstorm, how it reacts? iii. If after analysis, the computer / software detects that an incoming vehicle & object has 99-100% chance of collision, what basic maneuvers it does to have minimal impact on the occupants?

    Why wouldn't it know the driving line? It's only a matter of mathematical modelling; something computers do better than humans - add in the fact that it can be programmed exactly how to brake, accelerate, change gears and it could very well take on the Stig, etc.
    There are videos here on RUclips showing Google racing around a parking lot at nearly a constant 40mph, drifting around corners. There's also videos (not by Google) that compare human vs math driving lines and how similar they are.

    My concern currently is basically, what happens when someone throws up a "CONSTRUCTION: USE LEFT LANE ONLY" sign unexpectedly?
    The road isn't always 100% static, and a system that requires prior mapping might not handle this very well.
    I also haven't seen any videos of this system working in rain. Does it?
    I imagine it would certainly have trouble in snow.
