    So many hours watching Eurosport... Lister Storm, Panoz and the Mercedes is what is missing in this race. It's not the problem of getting old and that makes you think that the old cars are better. The cars from DTM, FIA GT... had something that the cars from today doesn't have. Specially the DTM. They looked a lot better in the 90's.

    Got to see these gorgeous cars at the '97 and '98 season-enders at Laguna Seca. Better variety in '97 but Porsche and Mercedes pulled out the stops and created some of the best looking sports cars ever in '98, with a special mention of the Gulf/Davidoff long-tail McLaren, of course.

    Hell yeah, that's the stuff! The original GT1 class is the shit IMHO and my favorite class in racing/motorsport (probably because I'm a guy that loves exotic cars and GT racing the most). Yes, its cars aren't the fastest, quickest and/or the most powerful, BUT they are still TRUE MONSTERS and are pretty close to Group C machines, especially the Toyota GT-One and Dauer 962 Le Mans (in terms of top speed, power and weight).

    Is that the Lotus GT1 with the 5.7L DOHC LT5 GM V8? It just doesn't sound like the TT Lotus 3.5L flat-plane crank V8 from the Esprit GT1

    • @rezandi4624
      @rezandi4624 7 лет назад +1

      It's a GM V8, probably 5.7 L like you said. I think I read something with modified corvette ZR1 C4 engine? All I know is that the lotus gt1 IS running GM V8.

    • @flyingphoenix113
      @flyingphoenix113 7 лет назад +2

      Yup! Lotus engineered the engine for GM and the C4 ZR1 and Mercury built the engine since Lotus didn't have the manufacturing facilities to keep up with Corvette production demand. At this point, Lotus was still owned by GM (remember the 1990's FWD Elan?), and they wound up holding on to a few of the GM LT5 engines. When the TT 3.5 Lotus V8 proved unreliable in racing, it was rumored that they shoved the LT5 into the GT1 and made it into a decently competitive car, but I had always thought that was just a rumor!

    • @rezandi4624
      @rezandi4624 7 лет назад +1

      Well promise is just a promise. Lotus GT1 isn't as reliable, and as fast as others... shame really. Despite that, we can't ignore that Mclaren F1 is too OP in it's time.

    • @flyingphoenix113

      Compared to the F50 ad Enzo that followed, the 288 GTO that came before, as well as most of the cars on the grid, yes. It does look relatively plain. Please keep in mind the context of his statements. The F40 is hardly a "plain" looking car, but it's all about the company with which it found itself.

    • @localrocker666
      @localrocker666 7 лет назад +5

      Modern lmp1 , alot slower tbh the Porsche 911 in 1998 for example at Le Man qualified with a lap time of 3:38.084
      the Porsche 919 Hybrid of lmp1 last year qualified pole with a lap time of 3:19.733.
      So still some of my favorite cars ever but alot slower as was probably the intent as the group C cars were doing lap times around the 3.20's in the late 80s and early 90s before they were taking down.

    • @Chopin1995
      @Chopin1995 7 лет назад

    • @DVGTS1
      @DVGTS1 7 лет назад

      They were on par with prototypes from their time. In fact, in '98 at the 24 hours of Le Mans, a good handful of GT1s were ahead of the prototypes. In '99, if the leading Toyota GT-One didn't have a puncture, the BMW V12 LMR wouldn't have won. You can't compare them to modern LMPs though, as downforce has greatly increased

    • @fuzzynutter8344
      @fuzzynutter8344 7 лет назад +1

      There were in effect two types of GT1 cars at the time competing against each other in the same class. Ones which were road cars adapted for racing in the traditional GT class sense like the McLaren F1 and F40 and the others which, due to exploitation of the rules, were nothing more than purpose built sports-prototype racing cars that spawned road versions to satisfy the rules like the Mercedes CLK-GTR/LM, 911 GT1 and Toyota GT-One. Because the latter were pure racing cars they were as fast as the cars in the official sports-prototype category at the time (LMP1).
      With recognition that these GT1 cars were really prototypes, and to close the loophole that spawned these cars, race organisers revamped the regulations so that for 1999 the GT1 category was scrapped and these GT1 cars now raced in a new category called LMGTP (Le Mans Grand Touring Prototype). LMGTP was now alongside LMP1 as a prototype class while LMGTP cars no longer needed to sire a road going version. LMGTP was for closed-cockpit cars, LMP1 (now simply called LMP) was for open cars.
      Also for 1999 GTS replaced GT2 while a new class was introduced, GT (for GT3-type cars)
      For 2000 LMP became LMP900 because a new, lower prototype class was introduced, LMP675 which was a late successor to the earlier LMP2 class of the mid to late 1990s.
      For 2004 LMGTP and LMP900 were eventually brought under one top level prototype category, LMP1, while LMP675 morphed in to LMP2. LMP1 and LMP2 remain to this day.
      So in effect GT1 became LMGTP which became LMP1.
      GT1 did momentarily return for a few years from 2005 (replacing GTS) but this was for road based racing cars as we know them, not prototypes masquerading as road cars!

    Absolutely no mention of proper GT1 cars that were originally designed as road cars and then competed: My personal favorite was the Bugatti EB110SS that raced in '94 alongside Lotus Esprits, Corvettes, F40's and Marcos'. Then the Germans were allowed to enter monstrosities like the GT1 and CLK GTR which, as usual, completely ruined the whole thing and brought about its end. They should've been banned before they even competed.

      Lucya Burkhalter GT1 cars are highest specification of GT racing which are upgraded road cars. Hence the extreme holomogation specials. Cars like the 911 GT1, CLK GTR, Toyota GT-One were built as race cars first, and then road cars second. GT500, much like DTM cars, are special built chassis not available to the public based on common cars (GTR, RCF, NSX).

      not street registered. they had to build a road car first to homologate the car in the GT1 category. that was the rules; but some brands got around that rule. by building firstly the race car and next the road car in the minimum amount requierd to homologate the race car
