  • Lowes approved installer's work and offers no real solution. Windows were supported by wood blocks on each end then spray foam filled the void. A thin veneer of mortar was added around the edges.

Nick it was nice talking with you about this Glass Block install job. You confirmed what I already knew. This was a very unprofessional job

The rough cut opening needed to be sized to the block window WITH green wood and the proper tar tape window flashing 1 inch in from the outside and down the front face of the outside wood. . Also between the green wood and the concrete should be sealed with liberal amounts urethane sealer. I like to add 3 deck screws in all the 4 boards so the window just slides in and when you pack the mortar with a tuck point knife it seals the window in but for the worse kickout scenario. The screw heads hold to the mortar you just packed in.

Sadly not the first Lowes contractor job gone wrong. A friend of mine had a bathroom done by Lowes subcontractors and 8k and months later sadly its still not right but Lowes simply stood behind their sub, they didnt even offer an apology. I think they hope people will just live with the problems. Because a law suit is complicated and at the end of the day what is best practice and what is legally acceptable practice is a debatable thing. In other words a poorly completed job is still a completed job, unfortunately. The real lesson is know your subcontractor, get references, get a warranty or guarantee of satisfaction make sure hes bonded licensed and insured. Then stick with that guy if he does good work and if hes good pay him really well so he always does good work for you. As a carpenter I feel bad for you.

I have been thinking of doing our basement windows. I would not put windows with that much of a gap in my openings. And I would not use the foam. Only good cement mortar. This seems like a hurry up job to me. Quick but NOT long lasting at all.

I’m actually a lowes doors installer in Alabama, I use to do windows with them. I don’t understand why they didn’t wood frame the opening and install replacement windows OR just order a window to fit the opening and screw it into the mortar joints.

Nick I looking forward to your views on the windows. I welcome views from the trades on this install.

Sorry this happened to you. I want to live vicariously through you and never use Lowe's. Would rather buy the windows I have a contract to put them in for me. The contract is it I knew and trusted.

Manufacturer will okay gap of up to inch , but not the spray foam. Gap should be completely filled with high strength glass block mortar.

HACK ARTISTS...The blocks should have been better sized for the R/O. Otherwise, mortar in a solid mortar bed under the block. There's all kinds of F 'ed up going on here!!! LMAO

Probably should have framed it out more with treated lumber. Then use glass block mortar and silicone.

Horrendous job just awful in every way . But typical as big box has the money to face any lawsuit . They use subs who make low wage and most of the subs has someone they paying 15 dollars cash an hour actually doing the work . If they are not inexperienced bad handymen they are thieves casing your home for future break ins . And or stealing stuff without ya realizing it when they are in or around the home.

The windows ended up being free. The credit card bank gave us our money back after two contractors and the company that made the windows said they were wrong size and not installed per specs.

@@glennbentley8603 Free or not free. They should be reinstalled correctly. Someone can easily kick that whole assembly into the basement. Nothing is holding it in place except some weak spray foam. No reinforcement, no channel, no anchors. And it will continue to crack.

Shitty install job but in the case of mortar shrinking is normal. Mix new mortar to a consistency of a milk shake and paint it onto the mortar and that will clean up the cracking.

Yeah, right. Just patch over the problem and call it a day. That installation needs to be completely redone correctly.

thats a shit install with a shit silicone panel. Mortar is not recommended to be installed that thick. 3/4 inch max.... The panel needs to fit the opening. If the panel would have had 3/8 inch joints it would have fit the rough opening and no need for 1.5 inch joints.

The sad thing about this was Lowe's not wishing to correct their mistake, and standing behind the installer's sub par work.
