Ganapathi Kauthuvam | Bharatanatyam | Ganesh Chaturthi Special | 2020

Kauthuvam is a traditional invocatory number in Bharatanatyam recitals.
In a Kauthuvam, shollukattus or rhythmic syllables are intertwined with the lyrics of the song. Thus it has both Nritta or footwork and Abhinaya or expressions in its choreography.
It is a hymn or a song of devotion in praise of a deity. It was performed by the devadasis as part of the daily rituals, or on special occasions or during the festivals. Most of the Kauthuvams are dedicated to a particular deity. This invocatory piece is in praise of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles.
It says "O Nephew of Hari, the remover of obstacles, shower your grace such that the wrong deeds are destroyed. O lord of Devas and Ganas, the elephant-headed God, victory to you. The one who destroys the Karma of those who learn this Ganapati Kauthuvam"

Namaste! My teacher was trained under many gurus who practised different Banis. So you will see an amalgamation of different Banis in my dancing. But predominantly it's Kalakshetra.

As we don't have any kavuthuvam in Kalakshetra, it's always Alarippu first..
