Great video, Heinrich! The first video I watched from your channel was actually another one about creating presentations that you posted nine months ago. I watched that video for a business competition, and your tips helped my team and I be awarded a prize for the best presentation!
I cannot thank you enough. I am in the last rounds of interviewing and am doing a take home case study. I threw in a waterfall chart after watching your videos to better show how their churn rate went from low to high (and what happened in between ) and they were blown away. I also followed your other chart tips and wanted you to know that there is no way I would have gotten even this far without your tips. I would happily buy you a coffee man. You are a huge help. Many thanks! Can't thank you enough.
Hi Heinrich, I love your powerpoint videos. Would love to see one on shortcuts (not on the basic ones like copy paste etc.). Rather, how to align quickly etc. Thanks again!
The action titles video clicked with me immediately and I started using them straight away . I agree less is more, but it takes of confidence to hack slides down to the bare minimum. I have a collaborator that always says "too much" when he sees my slides 🤔
Hi, corporate banker here. Its absolutely true that bankers use that kind of deck. We do it because the audience is typically internal stakeholders (credit risk or management) and discussions typically leas to further inquiries on specific figures on the financials, and if its not on the deck, it would be difficult to continue to convo, thus we have to put it there.
This video sums it all up. When you get paid by the hour and produce nothing it takes 15 minutes to explain what everyone is doing wrong without creating something correctly in 3 minutes. Full Disclosure - I'm a consultant
Hi Casimiro, thank you for watching and your comment! Yes, if people like the video I might indeed do a next version in the future :) Best from Germany! Heinrich
Thanks for this video! I just found your channel. This reminds me of my years of working in consulting, and in German DAX companies. It looks like the overloaded slides are going out of style, thankfully.
Hi Heinrich, great video! Personally, I really enjoy doing power point presentations! It's a very useful way of consolidating knowledge on a subject! I will definitely take a look at skilshare's course!
Hey Heinrich! Am a student of your slides writing course and i loved it. really love this gem of a channel too :) this is also a very helpful video that helped me pinpoint better why sometimes the slides feel so off. would love to see more of these kind of content! also would love to see if you have tips on how to think better, and potentially how to improve our number sense - also some traits of good consultants
Professionally presented, share more educational materials, just guid little bit slow, so that we can follow which key do press to change the graph type
Could you do a video on creating a presentation for C-suites regarding launching in new markets? I kind of wondering how to do one for SEA opportunities
Hey Heinrich, Absolute banger with this video! Learnt a lot from your comments! Just wanna ask, how are financials presented more appropriately in a consulting deck?
Thanks for watching and glad that you found the video helpful! For further information on creating slide presentations please check out my course which is linked in all of my video descriptions!
Hello Heinrich, your advise is extremely helpful, thank you so much! Can you advise of individuals or companies who can help with the look and feel of a presentation if I would to deliver the content?
Hi Bengt, great to hear that thank you! Not really aware of a specific service that I can recommend. There is a large number of freelancers that worked for the "slide production factories" of the large MBB firms that are now offering there services as solopreneurs. Trust you will find several profiles like this on the usual online freelancer platforms. All the best! Heinrich
Hi Heinrich, what is your opinion about differentiating between "Reading Slides" (all content is readable) and "Presenting Slides" (most content delivered verbally, slides just show highlights... e.g. like at keynote or TED presentations)
Hi Ben, yes absolutely. In general, in the slide writing videos on this channel I do not refer to this Steve Jobs / Keynote presentation style (which is of course very valid for some settings), but rather business presentations. These might be presented, but often also just sent around or printed for a meeting. Best! Heinrich
Good practice should definitively NOT be to recreate a chart from data. It's a damn nuisance if data changes and chart has to be manually adjusted. Use Excel to hold the actual data, build the chart, and copy paste the chart from excel into powerpoint, being sure both excel and ppt docs are in the same folder, and using (if possible?) relative a relative filepath rather than an absolute one when linking both files. Best practice should always be to to try and separate data/content from form (as it is rule#1 in web programming, as it is in LateX), and also to use appropriate tools to do a task. Sadly, Office tools are sill in 2021 pretty lame at this, which is why ppt is so often a f* nuisance, and tends to feel like trying to make a Monet canvas in MS Paint.
Hi Tabula, appreciate your point and in general I agree. There are different ways to set up this workflow, also based on the tools available to you and the needs. Linking a PPT chart to a "live" Excel chart is one option, though sometimes you also do not want the chart to change for every change you do in the Excel. Best! Heinrich
Hi Nassif, thanks for watching! ;) In my opinion this video lives from having the visual examples in front of us. Though check out my other slide writing videos on more top-down advice! Best, Heinrich
Do you have any thoughts on a 35 year old going back for his MBA with the intent of moving in to some sort of consultant role at a top firm? I’m debating between an EMBA and full-time MBA. I got started a little late in my career as I was doing more “ministry” oriented work, and am trying to weigh out if I will be way too old for both of those paths. I have some experience at a research firm as a Customer Success Manager, but other than that, not much that would be applicable. Thanks in advance! To give some more context, I’ve been blessed to have an aunt provide a trust fund to pay for education at a Catholic University (hence me even considering an MBA at my age and stage in life). I’m currently looking at Notre Dame, Georgetown, and IESE in Spain. I’m also unfortunately single at the moment, if that makes a difference, haha, but do want to settle down and start a family soon. That’s another concern I have given the lifestyle of consultants.
Hi Devon thanks for your detailed message, much appreciated. If you are already 35 and want to do an MBA, you will likely be in your late 30s when joining consulting. At this age, it is not impossible but not straight forward to join the standard consulting tracks of MBB firms. What might be more relevant for you are expert tracks in these firms, if you can bring some functional or industry knowledge to the table! Though in the end do not obsess to much with consulting anyways, while consulting can be a great career choice, there are lots of other great career choices in industry as well :) All the best to you - hope everything works out the way you hope for!! Best, Heinrich
@@FirmLearning thank you very much, Heinrich! That is helpful and I think something I will look in to more. I plan on watching some more of your videos as I appreciate your style/quality and the insights you share...I hope the same for you as you do me!
Hi Temi, this was rather an ongoing process. It started in high school where they let us do quite a high number of presentations. During my Business undergrad I had plenty of opportunity to practice as well. The best school is of course the on-the-job training in consulting though :) Best! Heinrich
Hi Joe, the term "action title" is not invented by me but commonly used. Indeed a good question though why exactly it is called action title. Maybe anyone else here knows? Probably because it usually contains a verb :) Best! Heinrich
can i pay you to say the word "squirrel" and the statement "clean and clear car windows"? i don't think i've heard such a pronounced German accent outside of TV
Doesn't take an ex-McKinsey guy to tell a lot of these slides are just straight garbage. A lot of them look like they've been put together by a middle schooler with a bad case of ADHD - littered with 200-word essays nobody's got time to read, inconsistent font / text sizes, random colors randomly strewn everywhere, and many so many other bullshit aesthetics. I'm sure this guy intentionally picked out the worst cases, but man, some of these are just embarassing.
Thanks for your comment! Agree that many of the slides were not strong. Though my experience is also that even in large bluechip companies, a vast majority of people is not really competent at creating these slide decks. Therefore for sure need for training. Best! Heinrich
It feels like an Advertorial Video, 50% of the content is just Commercial. It would be great if you can focus on main points but then your earnings will take a hit I guess. Try not to do direct advertorial.
Hi Sanchit, thanks for the feedback. Have deliberately reduced the normal RUclips ad slots to make room for the sponsored Skillshare mention. Slide writing is a critical skill? In the Army we called it being a Powerpoint Ranger and it was a derogative term.
Hi John, can see the reasons for this. Still it is just a fact that in many corporate roles it is an important part of your job :) Best, Heinrich
Is it really nessary to add the company logo on every slide? I do not see what value it addiding. Its overcrowded the slides. On first slide its ok
Not necessarily, it is part of most templates though. Best! Heinrich
