Another tip I would like to highlight in addition to the ones mentioned are: 1) Font type, size and style - don't overdue it, keep things simple e.g. 2-3 at most. 1) The same goes for general color range. Simplify them e.g. use one for negative and another for positive developments. Try to align them with your presentation template colors, avoid the rainbow. This is awesome! One point I think you can highlight as well is the importance of visual formatting, particularly the usage of colors. For example, in the waterfall graph that shows changes in EBITDA, negative-EBITDA factors can be colored light red while positive can be light green. This makes it easier for someone to just look at the slide and "get it".

This is great! This is something we can't learn outside of the consulting firm. As a small business owner, I think the presentation layer is as important as the analysis process. Or I can say the better presentation slides also helps the clear analysis. My current workflow is to use Python Pandas and pyplot to draw something quick(ugly...) for slides but it seems there's a lot to learn and be improved! Thank you and I'll keep follow this channel. Another fantastic video - the Minto pyramid principle can also be used to highlight structure in a slide and how you should structure the points. You may have already addressed in a different video!
i am not in the first year, coming off from engineering consultancy going into management consultancy... i am still in the interview process... i really don't know if I can cope with it... many reasons for me to make the jump... money is one of those reasons... and i don't see myself excelling in the engineering line anymore... because I enjoy utilizing my people skills... i hope this is the correct jump for me... thank you mate!
Could you do a video on formating tables for powerpoint presentations please? Sometimes data tables are inevitable and giving them a nice format is a struggle
9:05 callouts: give details to the charts. 10:45 stickers: 1. type of stickers: for discussion, preliminary, highly preliminary, indicate, illustrative. 2. why important: protect yourself 11:10 I'm interested to hear your opinion, also. why do you believe this is true? 11:25 when some clients say it is BS and do happen, but the problem is just maybe you don't have all the data needed. 12:40 indicate, illustrative: the number is maybe not right, but for the directionally-wise is somehow correct. 14:30 takeaway: general information to the whole chart 15:10 often, a bubble: limitation to the data you're showing. 16:35 if in trouble, use a bubble. 16:50 number circles ??? 不懂用處 19:40 clotheslines: unstructured and random. the people are not trust the statement you present. if you have just thoughts, these are completely not professional. 20:50 in M&A, the structured elements will look like this. 21:30 to avoid clotheslines: you can create buckets.

Hi! No, animations are very rarely used in these settings. Main reason is that documents are not optimized for presentations, often they are just printed out for meetings / sent around as a PDF without ever actually being presented. Best! Heinrich
As a scientist, I have to communicate findings all the time. Never have I ever seen plots that bad.... And this goes not against you... much rather against the common management ppt slide ;) there is a reason why, on Reddit, they make fun of presentations from consulting firms...
Hi, thanks for sharing your perspective. What exactly do you mean by "plots that bad"? I am currently pursuing a PhD myself and therefore also attend research conferences etc. Frankly, I do not have the impression that most scientist are very effective in communicating their findings and data on slides, though there are of course exceptions. Firm Learning - I should have clarified that, within our field (Neuroscience), I’ll find plenty of bad examples as well. Especially on conference posters. :) I made a general comment about the amount of excel bar graphs I‘ve seen in the industry (highlight: unlabeled axes). And I’m not saying: complex = good. One side question: I am curious about what you are using in daily work to deal with researching incl. collection info, distilling insight in reports and managing knowledge which then can be the input of your presentation. I am using basic onenote/word/ppt/folders for such work. Organising my findings in notes, saving the reports/websites and searching based on what I have found has always been a pain. Could you please share your experience and tools you use to manage this? Thank you very much!

Hi Tak, Thanks for watching and your comments! Frankly, in consulting (at least what I experienced at McKinsey) people do not usually write down commentaries for the slides. Probably due to three reasons: 1) Slides are usually already supposed to "stand for themselves" with all the relevant facts and information on the page. Therefore no need to provide even more data in excess of that. 2) Due to the tight deadlines, teams often make changes until the very end, now also spending time on writing commentaries would just be too much to handle. 3) Consultants, especially the more senior ones then presenting the content to senior clients, usually are pretty strong at presentation skills, also because they do it so frequently. They are trained to present slides without the need of specific "talking points". The partner who walks in and delivers the presentation with slides he has never seen before is also kind of a meme in consulting in itself ;) Hope this makes sense to you. However, writing good end effective summaries / minutes after important meetings or similar briefings is a skill you need more frequently in consulting. Doing this well is not trivial. So yes, this might be a good idea for future videos, have added this to my idea list for future content! :) Best and thanks, Heinrich

Hey Heinrich, I was wondering where you see the difference between a „takeaway box“ and an „action title“. In my experience the content of these may overlap/be repetitive. What is your take on this? Thanks a lot in advance!
Hi Adrian, yes, agree that the action title and the takeaway box can be quite similar. Key thing to realize is that there is no need to put a takeaway box on all pages, rather use it as an additional tool in your box if helpful. You should indeed avoid just repeating the action title in the takeaway box. Common way to use it is to include an insight in it that is a bit more specific / focusing on a given detail than the action title. E.g., action title could be "Company faced growth of X% across all business units", then the takeaway box "Y is the fastest growing business unit with growth of Z%".. hope you get the idea. Best! I use the waterfall chart pretty much for all C level presentation to breakdown the earnings and ebitda. Didn't know it isn't widely used in corporate presentations...

@@FirmLearning sorry, I was using "voice to text" on my phone and it clearly didn't insert the right text! I was trying to ask if you would have the "Takeaway box" visible the entire time you were presenting that slide, or have it appear at the end to help summarize your point before you move to the next slide. I've seen it done both ways by consultants and I was just curious on your opinion. Sometimes you don't want your audience to jump to the summary/conclusion until you have presented the case (data on the slide).

Three tips to make it a 10/10 video: - love that you kept your camera on when recording the slides. I found it a bit distracting that the video is on the bottom right corner and you looked to the right as well. Consider putting the video on the left or mirror the video. This will make you look at the great content you produce. - you have a window in your background. This is always a difficult setup for lightning when recording a video - since you use you mouse pointer to show things it would help to use a mouse pointer highlighter to focus

From what I know, the smallest license that you can get is a license for 5 people for about 1.000 EUR per year. Maybe there is an option to get it at your firm if several people use it? Best! Hi, usually the higher the font size, the better. Most pages have a font size between 12 and 18 based on the type of page. Font size smaller than 10 should be avoided! Best, Heinrich
OMG - I use clotheslines all the time :-) You give me something to chew on. I mean that is *a lot* of work to convert these into structure elements. Even more when you actually only want to list options. Will see if I can take up this practice.

What about making an executive summary slide that is a list of bullets made of all key action titles? Would that be an okayish case for a clothesline? Would you add some icons to make it look a bit less bland?

Hi! No, animations are very rarely used in these settings. Main reason is that documents are not optimized for presentations, often they are just printed out for meetings / sent around as a PDF without ever actually being presented. Best! Heinrich
As a scientist, I have to communicate findings all the time. Never have I ever seen plots that bad.... And this goes not against you... much rather against the common management ppt slide ;) there is a reason why, on Reddit, they make fun of presentations from consulting firms...

I am currently pursuing a PhD myself and therefore also attend research conferences etc. Frankly, I do not have the impression that most scientist are very effective in communicating their findings and data on slides, though there are of course exceptions. Firm Learning - I should have clarified that, within our field (Neuroscience), I’ll find plenty of bad examples as well. Especially on conference posters. :) I made a general comment about the amount of excel bar graphs I‘ve seen in the industry (highlight: unlabeled axes). And I’m not saying: complex = good. One side question: I am curious about what you are using in daily work to deal with researching incl. collection info, distilling insight in reports and managing knowledge which then can be the input of your presentation. I am using basic onenote/word/ppt/folders for such work. Organising my findings in notes, saving the reports/websites and searching based on what I have found has always been a pain. Could you please share your experience and tools you use to manage this? Thank you very much!

Thanks for watching and your comments! Frankly, in consulting (at least what I experienced at McKinsey) people do not usually write down commentaries for the slides. Probably due to three reasons:
1) Slides are usually already supposed to "stand for themselves" with all the relevant facts and information on the page. Therefore no need to provide even more data in excess of that.
2) Due to the tight deadlines, teams often make changes until the very end, now also spending time on writing commentaries would just be too much to handle.
3) Consultants, especially the more senior ones then presenting the content to senior clients, usually are pretty strong at presentation skills, also because they do it so frequently. They are trained to present slides without the need of specific "talking points". The partner who walks in and delivers the presentation with slides he has never seen before is also kind of a meme in consulting in itself ;)
Hope this makes sense to you. However, writing good end effective summaries / minutes after important meetings or similar briefings is a skill you need more frequently in consulting. Doing this well is not trivial. So yes, this might be a good idea for future videos, have added this to my idea list for future content! :)

Hey Heinrich, I was wondering where you see the difference between a „takeaway box“ and an „action title“. In my experience the content of these may overlap/be repetitive. What is your take on this? Thanks a lot in advance!
Hi Adrian, yes, agree that the action title and the takeaway box can be quite similar. Key thing to realize is that there is no need to put a takeaway box on all pages, rather use it as an additional tool in your box if helpful. You should indeed avoid just repeating the action title in the takeaway box.
Common way to use it is to include an insight in it that is a bit more specific / focusing on a given detail than the action title. E.g., action title could be "Company faced growth of X% across all business units", then the takeaway box "Y is the fastest growing business unit with growth of Z%".. hope you get the idea.

@@FirmLearning sorry, I was using "voice to text" on my phone and it clearly didn't insert the right text! I was trying to ask if you would have the "Takeaway box" visible the entire time you were presenting that slide, or have it appear at the end to help summarize your point before you move to the next slide. I've seen it done both ways by consultants and I was just curious on your opinion. Sometimes you don't want your audience to jump to the summary/conclusion until you have presented the case (data on the slide).

Three tips to make it a 10/10 video:
- love that you kept your camera on when recording the slides. I found it a bit distracting that the video is on the bottom right corner and you looked to the right as well. Consider putting the video on the left or mirror the video. This will make you look at the great content you produce.
- you have a window in your background. This is always a difficult setup for lightning when recording a video
- since you use you mouse pointer to show things it would help to use a mouse pointer highlighter to focus

I've joined a VC firm after consulting, and kind of miss using thinkcell because its so much faster, was wondering if you could make a video on thinkcell alternatives that we can purchase on an individual basis?

From what I know, the smallest license that you can get is a license for 5 people for about 1.000 EUR per year. Maybe there is an option to get it at your firm if several people use it? Best! Hi, usually the higher the font size, the better. Most pages have a font size between 12 and 18 based on the type of page. Font size smaller than 10 should be avoided! Best, Heinrich
