  • In this video we explore different kung fu broad sword or Dan Dao techniques with Choy Li Fut footwork. The goal of this pattern is to develop not only familiarity of techniques of kung fu sword but a fluency that allows the student to utilize various techniques from various positions.
    ***Don't use a sharp sword for practice, it is irresponsible when learning new movements as you could seriously injure yourself.***
    Treat the pattern as a platform for training that can be adapted to your preference in style or tendencies in movement. When you feel comfortable with the basic movements, you can then add to the pattern however you want. Learn the moves, learn expression through moves, express yourself by creating the sequence. But only after many hours of serious practice.

    Fun sequence; been noodling around with it this evening. It seems (from this very small sequence, admittedly) that the only major difference between this style and our Pak Mei dao is wrapping against the arm, whereas most of our wrapping puts the back of the blade against the oblique on the left (non-dominant) side.
    Really diggin' what CLF has to offer in the bladed-weaponry department.
    Thanks for sharing these i instructionals; concise, comprehensive, to the point. 👍🙏👊

    Good stuff! Subbed. Would be great to see you do some video lessons on the drunken form of choy li fut as well as weapon sets like the horse bench technique and three section staff forms.

      I've got a playlist for just Horsebench, and have been lagging on adding to the Three Section Staff Playlist. Drunken is special to me, so I want to make sure I represent it well before I teach it online! Definitely in the near future for sure!!!

    I've come to appreciate this little exercise so much, it's become a regular part of my personal training. CLF's dao and Pak Mei's dao use similar methods. Thank you for sharing this, Sifu. 🙏

    Very nice movements, you should really test your skills in actual combat full speed and strength. This will let you know what is working what doesn't work and what YOU need to work on. If you are in Switzerland I'm sure your will have no trouble finding a HEMA club to spar with.

    Beautiful economy of movement! Again you have demonstrated really well how the triangle, forward, pulling horse and Cat merge to allow very fluid movements. You make me want to return and restudy. Where do you teach? I studied in the UK under Sifu Patrick Chang Law. Your enthusiasm and humility shine through, you have been taught well.

    Love your work! I always loved broadswords (especially the double) and wanted to train with them. Where do you prefer when looking for broadswords? I’ve looked through sites like Century MA and AWMA so far.

      Thanks so much!!! It's really tough to find weapons that are not wushu or super expensive custom. For broadswords in particular I go to buykungfu.com other than that I've found good swords from Tiger Claw and kung fu direct, just pay close attention to the steel type.

    Sifu Kuttel, I just checked out " buykungfu.com " , I almost had a fit! I have been looking for some of those weapons for Years on end ! I couldn't find them any where, I know who is going to be my new supply company. There are some great weapons there. I have been looking for a two sectional staff for 30 years that wasn't wushu type ( those are not real! )

    what are some applications for these movements?

    • @SifuKuttel
      @SifuKuttel  Год назад

      The video is made to cover the fundamentals of the movements and footwork so it doesn't go into application. Typically I teach detailed applications in my school and online program. However, it is pretty straight forward for the dao, you can look at each technique individually and figure out how the sword would be used to generate cutting power.
