- This video shows a custom timber framing jig in use to cut a door post. It is speeded up 4x. The jig has an articulated Mafell bandsaw, a modified radial arm saw chainsaw mortiser from Woodworker supply (I added two more bars and chains) which is driven by a Suhner flexible shaft grinder and a router also driven by the flexible shaft. It works with timbers and also with logs which can be indexed on an axis and rotated to different positions for the cutting of mortises and tenons.
This winter I totally redesigned and built a new version which is much heavier duty and can handle longer material without re clamping as the carriage can cantilever 4' out the ends to bring the end of a long timber into the frame. I have added a heavier duty grinder and flex shaft which makes the mortising much faster. The new version has a Hema slotting bar and mortiser chain mounted on a modified ProTool mortiser body replacing the mortiser on the first version. There is a chainsaw bar for cutting quarters out of a log or timber or making octagon posts and other ripping jobs. It also has a router/shaper spindle. Layout on logs is done with a cross line laser level.

I made more changes a couple of years ago. Using a Rockwell turret style radial arm in a hopefully more stable arrangement and adding a Dario SN44 bandsaw to be able to do the tenons on larger logs that are too big for the Mafell bandsaw. It comes with a heavy duty articulated arm. The chainsaw works for those rip cuts but is much slower.
