Impressive precision and power combined in these heavy-duty marvels. Mahogany is such a fine wood. The price is so steep. Makes fine furniture and cabinetry. Gunstocks are also another use. Sturdy, gorgeous, and lightweight

Mahogany grows in south Florida. It is Cuban mahogany which is considered the finest species of mahogany due to workability, appearance and termite resistant heartwood. Has what seems to be some silica in the wood so can dull gouges faster than some other woods.
I have found many pieces laying in the street after tree trimming or tree being cut down.
I turn it on a lathe. Tight grain, smells good, not too hard or soft a wood. Darkens beautifully with age. Just an oil finish.
Working with It is similar to cherry. Leaves even look like cherry! May be in the same family.
Love this wood. So much is just wasted.

In our place there are several types of wood, and this type of mahogany wood is considered the best, this type of wood is quite easy to process, people often use it for house construction.

One of the scariest things I can see about this setup is the lack of ballistic shielding around the band saw blade. If the blade ever hits embedded metal in the log, it could split lengthwise and go flying. You do not want to be anywhere within a hundred feet of an airborne saw blade. It is death looking for you.

As a college student in the 60s in a summer job, I worked in a box/pallet factory. It was a very old company and the equipment was incredibly old. Seemed that everyone in the place was missing fingers. one day I was assigned to "tail" or catch the pieces coming out of the huge resaw. The wheels were about 6 ft. in diameter and one was embedded in the floor. The blade was about 6" wide and probably 20-30 feet long if stretched out.
The old fellow showed me where the blade had been brazed to fix cracks, and explained that ti could break at any time. If I heard a sharp crack like a .22 rifle - run, whatever direction I might be facing, just run, because that blade is coming out and will cut a man in half. One day we were running 12 foot pieces about 8" wide, reducing them to about 3/8 thickness for boxes. The pieces were like handling noodles to get on the cart, ad I was struggling.
Suddenly there was a loud, sharp crack and I started running, with crashing and banging behind me. That blade was about 25 feet long and had thrashed around breaking and cutting whatever it hit. They later asked me how I jumped over the 4 foot high stack on the cart and I asked "what stack?"
I went straight to the manager and told him I would be going back to school soon but I was leaving that place NOW. The next year, he called and wanted me to come back for the summer. I worked for the highway engineering department, dodging construction equipment, probably just as dangerous, but at least there was plenty of room to run.
