My grandfather used to make maple syrup on a commercial scale. His set up was not much different than yours. He had a holding tank for the sap that gravity fed the arch. Also used a snowmobile with a sled to collect sap or a tractor with a 55 gallon barrel strapped to the front. He usually produced 175 to 100 gallons a season. Seeing you lug buckets around and spit wood brought back memories.
I could see growing into a larger scale operation for sure......love it. Glad you enjoyed the video Tim
Great episode! Maple syrup turned out great. Miss not seeing Jen in the show.
Thanks Randy.....Jen is back now, so no worries 👍
We'll be back up there soon lol we can't wait to be there full time 😄 so glad you have the syrup 😊 😀
May the Lord bless and protect you and Jen
Hey buddy what a peaceful, calm way to interact with Mother Nature. James Taylor makes syrup on his place in Maine too. It’s like therapy to watch the process. Be well and stay safe. Puck.
Thanks buddy....I am glad I can share the moments with you all. 😊
SWEET!!! Man that looks like fun , seems the trees are producing great
Oh yeah! this week it is going to be a crazy week for sapping.....it might kill, me, LOL
Here's an idea: set the boiler up down at camp, invest in about a mile of plastic tubing and an additional food grade IBC tote, and run the tubes directly from your taps down hill to the tote and sit back while you watch it fill up. Then it's an easy task to pull from the tote and feed the boiler. If you end up doing this I claim 1% ownership stake in the J&J OG Maple Syrup Co. 👍
Lol.....great minds think alike my friend. Long term goals man. 👍
Great job Jay, thanks for another great Video. Enjoy watching especially now making the awesome Michigan Maple Syrup.
Thanks Paul
You made it look so easy! Great job👍
Thanks Lisa.....it is a lot of work.....but I really enjoy it.
Very nice first harvest of the season. Yummm!
Yes, thank you
That was cute, the selfie with your maple syrup.
Great video Jay. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great job Jay 👍
Good job, Jay!
Cheers from Ontario 🇨🇦 Maple Syrup looks yummy!
Wow, all that you got to go through to make a batch but oh what a nice batch 8 jars is not bad...awesome well done 😊😊❤
Thanks Elva
I bet it will be delicious!😋
geesh Jay that could double for a kiln, or a still if you wanted . Pretty fancy.
I am really liking it too. I'm thinking it will be part of the new outdoor kitchen. Fire grill, pizza oven and boiler all in one. Good idea?
Looks good. 😀
Thank you 😋
Fascinating for me. Quite a process and enjoyable to learn. Thanks. May Peace Health and Happiness follow you and yours
Glad you enjoyed it Bill

Mmm, Mmm, GOOD! Keeping yourself pretty busy and having fun stocking up the Homestead! I saw how you slipped in one of Jen's teeth Smile! You really must be missing her! I don't blame you, I would to! See y'all next week, JB
🐾🐕🐕
Thanks buddy
That looks so good. Jay you scared me to death carrying those buckets on those snow covered hills without a lid. Looking good SEMPER FI
Ya, I was tip toeing. I took a spill or two off camera. The sap was the least of my worry afterwards, lol. But I'm good.
Cheers from BC Canada
Cheers my friend
How's she goin'? Very nice Jay!! Nothing nicer than Maple syrup and to think 8 hours or so ago it was in a tree!! You have a nice evaporator set up there. Enjoy!! Take care!!
Thanks Buddy, If you are skipping your season this year at least you get to hang out with me while we hang out, LOL. I do like the satisfaction of that. A Close second is eating a fresh fish dinner.....fresh as in......swimming hours ago. LOL
Yummy, yummy! 😋
So good!
Best wishes mr good work
Many many thanks
Cool Jay you got a gallon of syrup done. I remember grandma doing this at our cabin. Miss the 160 acres in Clare County Michigan. 😢.
Woot woot Melissa......sorry to make you home sick. Michigan is great, but the winters scare us all. Lol
@@OffgridwithJayandJen That's why I watch you both to remind me why I live in Arizona. 😂
Hi Jay
Nothing like pure maple syrup. Especially if it's from your own property.
This looked faster than last time.
Something is missing on this video.
Oh, it's Jen.
Hope she's doing okay. Can't wait to see her back. Even though you're doing great by yourself.
Stay safe
It did go faster than last year. I miss Jen too
That’s a pretty good haul & looks delicious!!! We agree “buy dirt”! Fun video but we miss Jen😢
Me too!!
You are living Jay
I'm trying
Hey good afternoon you guys what she marries making today making syrup alright well I guess have a great day and keep up the good work🎉❤🎉🎉🎉🎉😊😊😊😊❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤
Thank you! You too!
REWARDS......lots of hard work......lots of bounty......nice batch of early season golden ...... I like the golden it usually has a more delicate flavor......how does yours taste?
It was really good....really 👍
👍
First viewer love from India 🇮🇳
That's awesome ,how much syrup did you start out with ? (before it was boiled down?)
My best guess is 35 gallons of sap.
By time sap season is over you are going to have quite a bit maple syrup 🥰.
Oh ya.....and I have a good reason to get back outside, lol
You dont collect into a big container then wait for the tree buckets to also be full to boil?
Maybe next year.....this works good for me because it is a full day work, but not overwhelming. And the weather has been back and forth so it only runs for a day or two then stops.....then back on again a few days later. Weather being stubborn this year, lol
Why did you add snow to the boiler at first was that to clean it? when you fist started....also will you continue to collect and make more!! love maple season!!
Yes the pan was dusty, so I filled it to give it a scrubbing. Then dumped the water.....forgot to show that. Sorry. Ya it is a great time of year....woot woot Kristin
@@OffgridwithJayandJen that’s what I figured but just wanted to double check because I have never done that….. do you ever save sap to just drink
@@kristingrounds4163 I know people do and have, but not I, lol
you had me scratching my head at first saying wth is he doing work table what? then you slid it over and every internet meme of OOOOOOOOOOO flashed through my brain. Good job my guy I like it and it will no doubt work well!
I bought it with that set up....didn't think I would need it, but it was very handy
Let the ads play viewers. Helps the channel !!!! 😁😁👍
Thanks Timmy....it means a lot.
@@OffgridwithJayandJen Welcome. You guys are doing good !
👋😎👍
Excellent video Maple syrup yummy I don’t understand why you put water first. Where is your wife Jen and the dogs I miss them.
Thanks Mike, I just used that water to clean the pan, I dumped it, but forgot to show it. Jen will be back soon...she was downstate to get some products for the cabin.
It seems like you put a lot of videos out in the last two weeks love it ❤️❤️❤️❤️🇨🇦😎
Looks like your yield is a 10-1 ratio?? IF it did my math right. 10 gallons of sap = 1gallon of syrup??? Is that about right? Cool video. I've never sat and watched anyone form start to finish in the process
I've heard it's 40 sap to 1 gallon but don't know for sure
The ratio was more like 40 or 50 to one......i left out a lot of buckets going into the boiler. Lol
Almost looks like you know what your doing Jay...how much wood do you go through in an average season of maple syrup?
You know what......I used a TON of wood last year....but this new boiler is working great. My most recent batch I boiled for 6-7 hours, boiling down 40-50 gallons of sap, and only used a third of a face cord of wood. Maybe less.
👍🙂🙋♂️🇩🇪😊🤗
Tell me where you live and store the maple suryp... ;-)
PS. I live in Sweden.
Lol......might be cheaper to go to the grocery store, lol. Thanks for the laugh
@@OffgridwithJayandJen I guess you're right. Here 8.8 oz costs 5.50 USD (250 g - 55 SEK)..
Life on lifes terms or taking control of how much fun your having... so Jen is in the hospital having a baby?? I jokes, she is teaching school as I figure, so enjoy the home cooked meals.. can't go wrong with stir fry as long as ya don't fall asleep like I do and cremate the grub.
Good ole Jen was downstate for the week, She had a crazy week and left me at the Cabin alone..
But your taxes just go up
