    my mom did thread crochet, bed spreads, table cloths, simply beautiful and when I look t them I see the hours and hours of work she put into them.. IM 71 now and finally picked up her needles to give this art a try. I made a snowflake- horrible!!! But after watching your video, I know what i need to improve on,and I think my mom would be proud of me, although I will never have her skill!

    This is just lovely. I’m brand new to crochet (I’ve made a few lopsided doilies so far) and just ordered the hook you recommended and some “8” thread to give it a go. I love the last name filet crochet designs. Growing up my dad had one framed on the wall that my great grandmother made for us. Now that I’m married, I want to eventually make one with my married name to hang up in our home. I never imagined I could do it and am surely not ready for it yet, but I am going to start practicing!! Thank you for the info and the encouragement!!

    I’m so glad this video came thru my RUclips feed! I’ve been “yarn crocheting” for many, many years. I’m almost 65 and I began crocheting when I was 15. Never had I tried thread crochet until recently. HUGE difference and epic fail on my part. It looked like a 2 year old got into mommies thread. Terrible.
    So. Now that I have this maybe I’ll give it another go. Thank you so much!

    Finally! I've never seen anyone else hold the yarn and the fabric the similar to how I do! Ppl always tell me it's "wrong". But I learned to crochet when I was 5. I can't ever recall having issue w my tension . I'm starting thread crochet and tunesian now too and appreciate the advice. I feel my eyesight may ruin it for me though.😢

    • @MezzaCraft
      @MezzaCraft  Месяц назад

      Well, there's not really a "wrong" way to hold the hook as long as you're forming the stitches correctly and not risking any strain injuries. I think there's a lot of advice from people that don't actually have very much crochet experience past their own armchairs :-) ... I struggle with my eyes too ... I'm best in good, natural light and struggle at night when my eyes are tired :-(

    I like your advice and guidance. I really dislike sloppy/messy stitches.
    I taught myself to crochet first on thread, and mostly on #30wt threads. I noted immediately that most of the work I was seeing on video tutorials produced very sloppy and messy looking work that bore little resemblance to the fine thread pieces that my grandmothers produced. Speed seemed to be the major underlying problem. And so I crochet very slowly and hold my thread in a nonstandard way that allows me to keep my tension more uniform. My pieces highlight the dimensionality of the finished pattern and hold their blocked form far better this way. I cannot complete projects with the swiftness that others do, but I am always confident that my efforts lead to an end product that would make my grandmothers proud.

    Thank you for breaking this down for us. I've been searching for videos that show different ways people hold their work and realizing what a difference it makes. Even how far away from the needle our left point finger i.e. "thread tension finger" makes a huge difference in speed and gauge. I'm trying to bring my finger lower down to my work so I won't have to reach up with the needle to hook the thread and thereby avoid getting into that fat shank area. All the superhuman speed crocheters I've seen barely move their needles away from that left tension finger, just smoothly rubbing back and forth there and hooking the thread. It's amazing! This has been very helpful. Thanks so much!

    Lovely tips! One thing I do is (and mind, I’m still a beginner) is to crochet far tighter than I would with larger yarns and hooks by holding much more tension and sort of lightly tugging the yarn to finish a stitch. I do, though, typically work in laces that use a lot of chain and slip stitch, so tightly finishing those slips is important.

    • @MezzaCraft
      @MezzaCraft  5 лет назад +2

      Hi Yashshri, if you haven’t already, you can try washing & blocking - I.e. hand wash and then pin out to dry flat on a towel, concentrating on pinning the corners down. Another thing you could try is ironing the piece but placing a damp cloth between the work and the iron and then using a light starch spray.

    • @MezzaCraft
      @MezzaCraft  8 месяцев назад

      Hello! On most hooks the thread should go on the shaft after the throat which is usually tapered from the groove of the hook up to the shaft- if you keep the thread on the throat of the hook, the stitches will be too small. It’s difficult to explain without seeing what kind of hook you’re using!
