The reason the ring and bracelet look different despite being the same flower is that the bracelet is in full bloom and the ring isn't. If you think about the two relationships, it makes a lot of sense. At least symbolically wise.
Himmel recognized that, as an elf, Frieren probably wouldn’t wind up reciprocating his feelings in his lifetime, and accepted that, her ‘happening’ to have picked out a design reflecting that (a flower that hadn’t budded, for a romance that would not necessarily ever be realized).
Yeah, you knew the moment Frieren said she doubted Himmel knew the meaning of that flower, you were going to see something that proved otherwise. Himmel knew Frieren would likely never understand his feelings for her, in his lifetime, but he was content just being with her. To Frieren, those ten years were but a brief moment, but Himmel made sure she would remember the time they had together; which makes these presents moments, when she finally processes those past memories, so beautifully tragic.
The reason they didn't fix the carriage using magic: In this world the more generally applicable a spell is, the more powerful/rarer it is. And modifying spells requires a very high level of understanding of how the spell works. Which is why, for ex: she couldn't make the carriage levitate but can fly on her own. It is also why all the spells we get sound so specific. For ex: the spell she got this episode was only to find lost accessories. It wasn't a spell to find any lost item. (Just accessories) You'll see more of this in the show as you watch.
Having hyper-specific spells also makes magic less OP and creates less plot holes. Reparo just fixes everything, so there can never be a plot element of stuff breaking in Harry Potter. Accio is also just an insanely useful spell. Harry literally cannot lose anything and can summon most things.
yeah its such a thoughtful magic system, it makes sense that spells are specific use and having a general use spell would be OP because whoever created that spell has a vast/universal majority of understanding different things like creating a spell that can clean ANYTHING would mean that whoever created that spell would have an insane amount of knowledge on all textiles and all kinds of stain/dirt and the reactions between them
Frieren follows the literary rule for magic systems where the system must be clearly defined and laid out with rules. If it isn't, then any conflicts in the work would be solved by "cast a spell" and you wouldn't have a show. The second type is no rules whatsoever for magic but magic must be at the root of the primary conflict. Ie Lord of the Rings
This is THE episode for me. That moment with Himmel kneeled down, the clock in between them, the silent intent in the message meant by Himmel but withheld on purpose to not burden Frieren with a short lived human love, chef kiss
Not so fun fact, that scene was meant to symbolize that Himmel knew that the only thing that was keeping them apart was time. Considering the fact that elves seem to be functionally immortal, they are only likely dying out due to illness, murder, accidents, or possibly self delete after a certain number of millennia (i am sure that immortality gets mentally taxing after a while)
suraj is spot on about frieren even though being 1000++ years old i still techinically in elf years still very young and just realizing now all the things himmel did for her 80 years ago
So the autors name is Kanehito Yamada, She writes the story. And the artists name is Tsukasa Abe. The anime is an absolutly stellar adaptation but if you want to see the original work you absolutly should because the manga is also very beutifull.
in the scene where Himmel gives Frieren the ring there is a clocktower between them symbolizing the only thing standing in the way of realizing their love is time.
Loved the discussion! 😂 We're all young at heart. I wanted to add that the elves' lack of romantic feelings makes Himmel's unrequited love even more heartbreaking. Also, you mentioned that Frieren's hobby of collecting spells seems childish, but she started doing it because she realized how much joy these random spells brought to those around her. That’s why she collects them, even though she only "somewhat" likes magic.
Frieren hasn't had romantic feelings because she is not mature yet, that does not mean mature elves have no romantic feelings, they definitely might. She wouldn't know that.
21:37 Saw that as less a ‘necessity,’ and more as what wound up being the case because of the internal situation (Riley’s “Joy” and that memory wound up in a place they shouldn’t have been, and Bingbong made that choice on his own).
Actual i wonder why the inn is still there after Stark slams the Door. Do you not know? Dwarfs have a natural resistance to fall damage. ... The episode everybody breaks with tears and a lot tissues. "Im used to loosing things" is probably the saddest sentence in the whole show
14:41 if you notice in this frame the clock was in the medal between Frierne and Himmel so someone said it means "THE ONLY THING BETWEEN THEM IS TIME" I AM NOT OK
This was the episode where if anyone watching has any doubts about how Himmel felt, they were gone by the end. At Anime Expo this past July, there was a panel for Frieren where the panelists were Series Producer Yuuichirou Fukushi, Series Director Keiichirou Saitou (who is a precious cinnamon roll and utterly flabbergasted by the reaction to his work), a creature designer whose name I forget, and voice actor Nobuhiko Okamoto, the VA for Himmel. One of the questions given the panel was what scane was their favorite of the first season... ...and you have three guesses what Mr. Okamoto's answer was, and the first two don't count. (づ ̄ ³ ̄)づ
21:20 You're conflating an imaginary friend (Bing Bong) with imagination as a whole. Inside Out was saying that as we grow up we lose some things, like an imaginary friend. They weren't saying that growing up means killing off your imagination.
14:41 noticed the little tragedy in the scene? The big thing standing between them is a clock tower, representing time. The time they have on earth was just too different.
Just a reminder!! They're going to Aureole so Frieren can talk to Himmel one last time. Also, it's just lowkey stated, but Frieren's collection of weird ass spells is not because she is childish, but because Himmel and the party find it amusing (or something along the lines). For example, the spell that makes grapes sour is for Eisen because he likes it sour (if i recall it correctly).
Environment and situations forces us to become responsible as we grow older. If their were no expectations, most of us wont be spending 10 hours in the office burning our lives to sustain a living. 90% of the people dont love what they are doing but they make peace with it.
Not so fun fact about the scene when Himmel gave Frieren the ring. He pretty obviously had feelings for her and recognized the design on the ring, and in the "proposal" scene, there was a clock between them, meaning that the only thing between them is time. Humans only live for ~100yrs, and Elves seem to be practically ageless, only dying of disease, accidental death, murder, or voluntary self delete.
Suffering a big loss, both her village and her master, might have made her aphatic, even more than elves are already, and living in isolation through most of her life, no wonder she doesn't understand feelings. After all she is "used to loosing things".
And you know HImmel would have loved to push the relationship harder, but just felt it wasn't fair seeing as how she didn't even seem to have a concept of a relationship with him. And with him never getting with anyone, it does seem like he really did make that eternal promise with her. So sad :( I only know of the anime so I don't know the future. But I really can't wait to see their interaction when they meet up again in the end if they do.
Himmel's vow This symbolizes my affection, my heart and my whole I swear unwavering devotion Separated by time, my endearment shall know no bounds. To you I give, my love, eternal.

why people say that to be an adult is equal to be boring 😅 or do boring stuff 😅, for me to be an adult is just to be responsable of my own actions, you know that when you are a kid or teen, almost always your fathers will respond for you against bad things or situations , they pay you the school, trips, vacations, clothes, etc… As an adult you do that, but you can also watch anime, play video games, do some sports , tell jokes with your friends, etc… I’m 39 years old, i have my company, a lovely 16 years old daughter , i maintain her, i pay my debts, i see my friends, we play video games, do birthdays, barbecues, parties, etc… i guess is a cultural thing too, but life is one and you have to live it to the fullest, no matter what old , dumb, boring people tell you 😅👍
Come on. They talked over the line "I'm used to losing things" That's why group reactions sometimes suck. They chatting over important character moments.
Fern is bullying Stark from the moment they met. I'm sorry. Not bullying. Their relationship started with Fern sexually assaulting Stark (using the see-through-cloths potion and mocking his weiner). Did Fern have a present for Stark on his birthday? No. When she learned about it she took him shopping. I know, Stark's a dude, so you can't dare to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Suraj having no clue about the elf village being wiped out from ep 10 just confirms the panel members don’t watch episodes they’re not reacting to when away. He wasn’t in the ep10 reaction. Shame I thought y’all cared enough for a great show like this that you wouldn’t just skip an episode because you’re not infront of a camera

The one thing Frieren loves more than magic, is sleeping, and she gave out that to look for the ring every night, that's how much ahe cared about it ❤
The ring scene with Himmel and Frieren gets me choked up every dang time. Loved your reactions.
If I remember correctly, the Mangaka of Frieren is planning on writing a set of short stories covering Himmel's party.
15:05 the timing and delivery of Starks line here is 💯

@jeffreysmith236 she says in one of the episodes that elves lack romantic feelings across the entire species that's why they're slowly going extinct
