In the original manga, the dance was one panel.
They brought in real dancers to animate them for this scene. NO CGI was used.
I have noticed that Frieren uses either no CGI, or it is blended so well that I cant even tell

The flower fed on mana via its curse.
Stark, who doesn't actively manipulate mana, fell first.
Fern, a young mage, fell next.
Frieren, an old mage, fell third.
Sein, who has innate resistance to curses, stayed awake.
11:21 "Mut" is German for courage.
The dance between Fern and Stark was simply superbly done. The whole series is a flex by studio Madhouse but that scene is a topper. The transition where during a turn Fern goes from a neutral expression to a smile is one of my favorite bits from the entire season.

Hey guys. Mut (like mostly every name in the show) is german and means "bravery". "Stark" means "strong" ; "Frieren" means "freeze" ; "Flamme" means "flame" ; "Himmel" means "heaven" ; "Heiter" means "cheerful" : "Eisen" means "iron"
12:23 I loved the other Stark-focused episode because it was great and really got me in my emotions, but this one is just another well animated moment. It's gorgeous.

100% agree about Frieren's voice in dub, Suraj. For me she sounds way too intentionally "badass" while in the native sub she's just existing doing her normal thing and the coolness is just a byproduct of it, which imo fits her character much better.
That's one of the many reasons Anime loves always say stick to the subs. In most cases its the translation errors but you also tend to miss the nuance in characters and line delivery
And then there's me who thinks Frieren's the best part of the dub lmao

The dub misses the bits of Anya from SxF's gremlin energy that seeps in to the Japanese VA's performance.
The rest of the dub is pretty good outside of one character I think they miscast later on.
For me, this is the main problem with most dubs. They often sound too forced, same reason I couldn't stand Eren and Armin in the AOT dub.
There's a few exceptions though. FMAB, Heavenly Delusion, Dan Da Dan are all great

For me, the butler was the mvp of the episode. Literally waited a whole day on the same position for Frieren to choose a Grimoire while holding back from telling her to get out already LOL

6:44 Interesting. Suraj, I'm the opposite- my first watch-through of Frieren was via dub SPECIFICALLY because I liked Frieren's English language VO- but I do agree the delivery of this specific line in Japanese is better than the English one.

Yeah, awkward translation. She was responding to Sein's information about hitting the core, because she wouldnt have known otherwise. She was just very fast on the uptake.
Lord Orden is the luckiest character in Frieren because he gets to call her mommy twice ;)

The epic battle, against the giant plant monster, inspired many a tale...off the head of a "grumpy gamer", named Arin Hanson.
What, no comment describing the Hand drawn dance scene (no cgi or rotoscope) and you can see the sketch on the internet, or the whole waltz Evan call developed just for this scenery. You can actually see in Seins Eyes how frieren prepared the shot. Sein just get cake-zoned.
The fact that the dance was TWO freaking panels in the manga is CRAZY given how good it is here.
I think itcs clear that the entire animation department is made up of Stark x Fern shippers. ☺️

On first watch I was 100% convinced that the dance scene was CGI, but it wasn’t. It was hand-drawn 😲😲😲
If I remember correctly, the dance was not rotoscoped. Which makes it pretty impressive.

I think technically Stark isnt royalty, its more like the noble house branched off the warrior village and became its own thing, but i guess if their clan was desperate for an heir i guess they could use Stark or any potential survivors of his village should they exist

Deadpan is just so much funnier. Frieren really embodies deadpan as part of her character. You might think she has no emotion in her delivery but it’s just very subtle, which is beautiful.

Have to keep in mind that with the dub, they need to put in more syllables to match the mouth movement. They can’t have Frieren just say ‘done’ there

I wouldn't say the dub is bad perse, but the Sub blows it out the water by miles & it's mostly because the dub doesn't capture the same personality for Frieren. One, it's clearly the voice of an older, deeper voiced woman, and that automatically changes the delivery. Frieren comes off as aloof & unassuming in the Sub, as opposed to the dub, she just sounds edgy.
I've noticed "edginess" is a constant trope American voice actors go for, whereas, Japanese voice actors are more fluid.
her english voice doesn't sound 'edgy' at all wtf.... unless u just equate monotone with edgy 🙄, her dub voice is great and fits the character perfectly.

I disagree, Frieren's dub voice is very monotone just like the sub voice. But then again it's all opinion based. Nothing wrong with preferring the sub over the dub or preferring dub over sub or loving both equally

I'm pretty solidly a sub guy, but I know a lot of times the difference between how a sub and dub is played has to do with the how the VA's are directed more so than the VA's themselves. For some reason dub directors will take a character that's very unemotional, like Freiren, and have the VA play it with more emotion and then, conversely, take highly emotional characters and tone them down in the dub.
That noble really has to work on his phrasing.
Frieren sub VA is amazing. Frieren english VA is amazing too, yet sound exactly like the sexy mature woman that Sein like. English VA Sein should be very conflicted.

There is no arguement for good or bad. One is the original version and the other is dubbed version . Most people prefer original while others are too lazy to read ( looking at you Rana) and claim it's about voice acting.

Don't forget, the dub actress had to use a line that matches the lip flaps, so she couldn't just say "done" or "got it".
IMO, English dub places too much emphasis on that. Accurate translation is more important.
I'm with you on this one. What's more distracting, lips that don't quite match, or weirdly phrased, unnatural sounding English that's been awkwardly contorted to match the rhythms of a completely different language? I feel like long time dub viewers get used to it, but it pulls me right out of a show. And then, yeah, there's the extra words and phrases thrown in that change the tone and meaning of lines. If you've ever watched a dub with the subs still on, they can be VERY different, to the point of obscuring important plot and character information, or changing the intention behind scenes. I realise translation is an art, and that 1:1 is often not possible, but i'd rather the primary focus be preserving the original intention as much as is possible in natural-sounding English. If that means some people's lips are moving after they stop talking, Fine. Its much less jarring than shoving a bunch of extra words into a sentence that didn't need them, and forcing your voice actors to talk like robots.
I like both sub and dub just prefer sub

In the original German, maybe, but his name here is rendered in Japanese. It's ムート which is 'Mūto'. You can even hear them say the 'toh' at the end when they say his name.

That's so untrue. She doesn't sound edgy in the slightest unless you think monotone = edgy. The eng dub expresses her aloof behavior the entire time.
