    During winter driving, if you put your sun visors down when using defrost mode. This will direct the warm air back onto the windshield and it helps keep the windshield warmer. Just a FYI.

    ...... chaining up is not bad if you do it the easy way .... I chain up twice a day all tires on two axels and can do it in just under 10 minutes and I am slow compared to some others .... this method works for singles which you were using, singles go over one tire, triples go over two tires and are called thus because there are three chains that hold the traction chains that go over the treads, one near the frame rail, one between the tires and one chain on the outside ..... there are only two differences from what you did to install your chains .... like you did, drape the chain over the tire and have the fasteners just touching the ground (do both sides of the truck the same, fasteners in front of the tire or behind the tire) then there is going to be excess on the other end, the tails. this excess you bunch up under the tire stretched out so the tails do not go under the tire ... then you drive over the bunched up excess and the truck in total moves abut 18 inches, maybe a bit more .... now your fasteners and the tails are all on one side of the tire ready for you to connect .... your fasteners should now be (I like to drive forward onto the tails, granted there are situations where you have to back over the Tails) lets be on your passenger side and you drove forward over the tails. The fasteners should be, think of your tire as a clock face, at about the 9 - 10 o'clock area and the tails should be lying right there ready to be picked up and hooked to the fasteners ..... hope this is of use to you ..... Oh yes and that guy that was spinning his wheels in the lot was just shining it up and making a patch of glare ice where someone may slip on or even worse break something, if he had just hug a set (chains) he woulda bin outa there ... chains are you friends .... some call them jewelry, accessorizing ..... one other thing .. when you have defrost on it flows up over the window and then across the roof of the cab ... if you put your visor straight down it forces the hot air back down to the windshield area and and will help with keeping the ice off the wipers and windshield ....... we are lucky only having to be out in that weather for brief periods of time, sure glad I am not one of those poor sods that works their full shift outside in it .... a bit long winded ,,,, thx for sharing a peek into your lives .... as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans .....

    My first snow was in Carlile PA. I pull Doubles. I was shocked how easy that tractor slid out from under the first pup upon acceleration from sitting at a red-light. I had very poor training none at all in the winter. No introduction to the Differential lock and the TCS systems when and when not to use them.
    This is my first job out of school. In info you could offer would greatly appreciated. I've been told pulling pups is far more difficult than pulling Vans or Containers. Which I also pull. I run the east coast which does not present half the challenges of the west.

    • @KaylaTaylorTrucking
      @KaylaTaylorTrucking  2 года назад +1

      Hi! That’s so scary (when the trailer or tractor starts sliding). I wish I could offer you some great advice, but all I can think of is to be safe and don’t drive if you don’t feel safe. I don’t usually drive winters (I’ve done one other winter) so I don’t have much experience myself, but stay safe out there!!!

      That seems to be the standard statement. If you don't feel safe dont drive. Maybe that's why Truckers are blamed for so many accidents because of the poor training in this Industry. I was a machinist for 45 years as well as a trainer for 20 and developed training programs.

    Plus as another one, add ammonia to your washer fluid,,it helps with road grime in winter 😃 I keep it in year long ,it helps for bugs in summer months 😀
    Also I always put alcohol in washer fluid to help keep it from freezing up in winter I try to find 90% if you can't find it's OK
    Just a little help for you

    This winter try to use rubbing alcohol as a deicer. Pour it all over your windshield and windshield wipers too and they won't freeze up. And for the trailer brakes pop the red hose. And pour rubbing alcohol down the hose but not too much. Then press in the red button and it will un freeze the trailer brakes

    OK Florida, you need a crash course in cold weather gear. :) Long underwear. They make really light, thin, stretchy stuff you can wear as a base. Layer up. Over your base you can add thin stuff, thin but loose pants, tee shirts, long sleeve, and then on that throw on sweats/hoodies. A little at a time as needed. For very cold/windy conditions, loose fitting snow pants and thigh length puffy coat with a deep hood. There is good outdoor canvas work clothes but they are heavy and stiff. Just be aware that snow pants and a lightweight puffy jacket will rip and tear more easily. Boots! Insulated, waterproof, and above the ankle. Get them big enough so they are not tight at all with thick socks and slip on and off easily with loosely tied laces for when you go in and frequently. Get them a little loose and they won't restrict blood flow and you can add chemical warmers if need be. Thick socks with extra pairs if they get sweaty or wet. Thick, puffy, light gloves with maybe an extra pair if they get wet. They are cheap and dry out more easily. You can also use super thin, breathable socks under your thick socks and your feet will feel dryer, you can slip into smaller shoes, and keep them on all the time with your base layer. Keep your base layer on most of the time. Keep the truck so it feels a little cool and it won't be as much of a shock when you go outside. Stay safe!

    Happy New Year ladies! I need your company to give you all hazard pay for having you guys drive in those conditions. Keep us posted as often as it’s safe & possible.
